But, as within a foreword, I should tell the reader why he or she should read the issue along with its potential importance in the field. So, bear with me. From the very beginning this whole journey got started a long time ago for me when my mentor, Nathan Zvaifler, invited his senior colleagues in the field of Rheumatology to UCSD starting in the 1970s with the purpose of enriching the scholarly and a...

Walter Bauer, Marian Wilkins Ropes, and the Massachusetts General Hospital
Walter Bauer was instrumental in the development of rheumatology as a medical subspecialty, promoting careful clinical observation and description and bringing basic scientists and clinicians together to study the “anatomy, chemical composition, and metabolism of connective tissue” in the laboratory. Marian Wilkins Ropes was a pioneering woman in medicine: the first female medical resident at the Massachusetts General Hospital, the first woman appointed as an assistant professor of clinical medicine at Ha rvard Medical School, the first woman elected to membership in the American Society of Clinical Investigation, and ...

Naomi Rothfield, MD, MACR
Naomi Rothfield was truly a pied piper of lupus. She had an abiding interest in the characterization and clinical significance of antinuclear antibodies and anti-DNA antibodies in the serum of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients. She described the use of serum complement in SLE diagnosis and the association of inherited complement deficiencies with SLE. Under her leadership, numerous professionals focused their clinical and research activities to benefit lupus patients. Naomi was also instrumental in establishing a lupus group to assist lupus patients, which became one of the founding chapters of the Lupus Foundati...
