The roles of readiness and dosage in predicting outcomes of a mindful sport performance enhancement intervention with U.S. college student-athletes
Psychol Sport Exerc. 2023 Sep 15:102539. doi: 10.1016/j.psychsport.2023.102539. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTResearch suggests that Mindfulness- and Acceptance-Based Interventions (MABIs) can impact sport performance and performance-relevant factors, though questions remain regarding when and for whom MABIs are effective. Specifically, inquiries into intervention engagement (i.e., dosage), potentially impacted by participant readiness, are needed. The present study utilized a non-randomized control group design with U.S. collegiate athletes to investigate MABI effects. Four teams from two universities in the Appalachian r...

The interplay between self-talk and body posture on physical performance: Analyzing a moderated serial multiple mediation model
Psychol Sport Exerc. 2023 Sep 11:102534. doi: 10.1016/j.psychsport.2023.102534. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPrior research has shown that non-verbal behavior (e.g., overt head movements) can moderate the effects of the positive and negative self-talk on physical performance. In the current studies, we aimed to extend that existing research on self-talk by examining a different non-verbal behavior (i.e., body posture), as well as specifying some conditions under which body posture can interact with self-talk on physical performance from a Self-Validation Theory perspective. Most importantly, we proposed and tested a moder...

The naturalness bias in sport
We examined the naturalness bias - the tendency to prefer people who seem to come by their talent naturally and not through work or effort - on ratings of athletic ability. Football (soccer) coaches, athletes, fans, and non-fans (n = 430) read about an athlete described as either being a natural or a striver. After watching a video of the athlete going through drills, participants rated the athlete on likelihood of success, athletic skill, mental strength, and physiological ability. Participants of all expertise levels tended to rate the athlete described as a natural as being higher in mental toughness than did the partic...
