Self-regulatory processes in goal striving during excellent distance-running performances: A qualitative study
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings extend theoretical understandings of goal striving and the self-regulatory processes endurance performers employ to attain and/or adapt their goals. Psychological support provided for athletes should go beyond simply setting goals, but also include training on mental frameworks such as MCII to manage goal-striving challenges and decisional conflict encountered during performances.PMID:38065659 | DOI:10.1016/j.psychsport.2023.102516 (Source: Psychology of Sport and Exercise)

Narcissism and antisocial behaviour in sport: The moderating role of self-compassion
Psychol Sport Exerc. 2024 Jan;70:102528. doi: 10.1016/j.psychsport.2023.102528. Epub 2023 Aug 30.ABSTRACTNarcissism, which features the chronic disposition to seek the opportunity to construct and maintain an inflated self, is a known risk for antisocial behaviour. However, knowledge of factors that mitigate the effects of narcissism on antisocial behaviour is lacking. In two studies we explored the hypothesis that self-compassion would protect against the link between narcissism and antisocial behaviour, such that narcissism would be less related to antisocial behaviour when self-compassion was high. Study 1 was a cross-s...

"That's too stereotypical … I don't want that to be how I identify": Identity and body-related sport experiences of racialized young women athletes in Canada

Epub 2023 Aug 25.ABSTRACTThere is minimal research on the sport experiences of racialized young women athletes in Canada. When studying racialized groups, an inclusive and meaningful approach to research is necessary because ethnicity and race are integral to understanding identity, diversity, discrimination, and overall experiences in sport. The purpose of this qualitative description study was to explore the identities and body-related sport experiences of racialized young women athletes in a variety of sports in Canada. Eight racialized youn...

Exercise as the sum of our choices between behavioral alternatives: The Decisional Preferences in Exercising (DPEX) test
Psychol Sport Exerc. 2024 Jan;70:102509. doi: 10.1016/j.psychsport.2023.102509. Epub 2023 Aug 16.ABSTRACTExercising can be theorized as the result of choosing one behavior over alternative behaviors. The Decisional Preferences in Exercising (DPEX) test is a computerized, easy-to-use, publicly available (open source Python code: https://osf.io/ahbjr/) and highly adaptive research tool based on this rationale. In the DPEX, participants are asked to choose between two images by pressing a key on the computer keyboard, one showing a physical exercise and the other showing a non-exercise behavioral alternative in a series of tr...

Just run: Development of a theory-based motivational online intervention for promoting ongoing running participation
Psychol Sport Exerc. 2023 Dec 5:102581. doi: 10.1016/j.psychsport.2023.102581. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRunning is a popular form of physical activity yet discontinuation is common. Interventions targeting physical activity adoption have shown modest effects, often with little translation into long-term participation, which may limit the health benefits available to the wider community. This paper details the development of a new online running intervention (Just Run) aimed at improving continuation of running activity in new runners through a motivational and psychological lens, including aspects of design, content, ...

Adverse competition-related cognitions questionnaire (ACCQ): Development and preliminary validation of a measure identifying different factors of athletes' cognitions related to competitions
Psychol Sport Exerc. 2023 Dec 5:102582. doi: 10.1016/j.psychsport.2023.102582. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis research project presents the development and preliminary validation of a German version of the Adverse Competition-related Cognitions Questionnaire (ACCQ) and comprises four studies. In Study 1, 101 athletes and 124 coaches from different team and individual sports generated a large pool of cognitions, which was reduced to an initial item pool of 54 cognitions through a multi-step procedure with different experts. In Study 2, the underlying factor structure of the questionnaire was examined by an exploratory f...
