The association of changes in leisure-time physical activity on depressive symptoms during Covid-19 in German adults: A longitudinal study
Psychol Sport Exerc. 2023 Nov 11:102562. doi: 10.1016/j.psychsport.2023.102562. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis longitudinal survey assessed preventive and curative antidepressant effects of at least 75 min/week of leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) at different timepoints of the Covid-19 pandemic. We further investigated if high self-regulation skills were associated with higher odds of initiating or maintaining LTPA during the pandemic. Data was collected online from 4253 participants (age: m = 33.65 years, SD = 0.79; 79 % female) during the first quarantine measures in Germany (T1), as well as 4 weeks (T2), and 8 ...

Golf skill learning: An external focus of attention enhances performance and motivation
Psychol Sport Exerc. 2023 Nov 10:102563. doi: 10.1016/j.psychsport.2023.102563. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAn external focus of attention has been shown to enhance the performance and learning of motor skills, relative to an internal focus (see Chua, Jimenez-Diaz, Lewthwaite, Kim, & Wulf, 2021). In the present study, we examined possible motivational consequences of learners' experience of greater movement success with an external focus. Participants were asked to learn a golf pitch shot. In addition to measuring learning, we assessed self-efficacy, as well as positive and negative affect in groups that received ext...

The association between morning pleasant anticipation and daily positive incidental affect on adults' daily steps: An ecological momentary assessment study
CONCLUSION: On days when participants had higher levels of pleasant anticipation in the morning, they took more steps per day. In addition, the association between morning pleasant anticipation and steps per day was stronger on days when participants had higher levels of PIA. These findings have practical implications for future EMA studies investigating the "anticipatory" affective processes on movement behaviors with the goal of promoting physical activity in daily life.PMID:37951452 | DOI:10.1016/j.psychsport.2023.102561 (Source: Psychology of Sport and Exercise)

A moderated mediation analysis on the influence of social support and cognitive flexibility in predicting mental wellbeing in elite sport
Psychol Sport Exerc. 2023 Nov 9:102560. doi: 10.1016/j.psychsport.2023.102560. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe purpose of this study was to examine the mechanism by which social support influences mental wellbeing. Using the thriving through relationships model to provide a theoretical underpinning, cognitive flexibility was hypothesised as a mediator. Additionally, the research examined the consistency of this pathway between elite athletes, retired athletes, and non-athletes. Survey responses from a sample of 247 participants (n = 49 elite athletes, n = 61 retired athletes, n = 137 convenience sample; n = 127 males, n ...

Martial arts, combat sports, and mental health in adults: A systematic review
Psychol Sport Exerc. 2023 Nov 8:102556. doi: 10.1016/j.psychsport.2023.102556. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMartial arts (MA) and combat sports (CS) are physical activities that may be associated with health-related outcomes. The aim of this systematic review was to synthesize and evaluate the available evidence on the relationship between MA and CS training and mental health of adult practitioners (≥18 years). CochraneLibrary, EBSCOhost, Web-of-Science, and Scopus databases were searched up to September 2022 for measures of self-related constructs, ill-being and well-being, cognition and brain structure/function, in ad...

Peer and parent influences on youth skateboarding and factors that affect their decision to return to the sport after injury
Psychol Sport Exerc. 2023 Nov 8:102559. doi: 10.1016/j.psychsport.2023.102559. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSkateboarding is an increasingly popular sport among youth, despite the fact that they are a high-risk group for injuries during this activity. The purpose of this study was twofold: to explore youths' perceptions about the influences that peers and parents have on their skateboarding; and to identify factors that affect their decisions about returning to the sport after injury. Virtual semi-structured interviews were conducted with 26 youth, 14-17 years of age, who had experienced a medically-treated injury while s...

Wellbeing in high-performance swimming: A grounded theory study
Psychol Sport Exerc. 2023 Nov 7:102557. doi: 10.1016/j.psychsport.2023.102557. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe demands of elite sport have the potential to negatively impact on athletes' wellbeing (e.g., Arnold & Fletcher, 2012; Rice et al., 2016). Despite this, not all elite athletes experience detrimental effects, rather some individuals thrive in an elite sports environment (e.g., Brown et al., 2017). The reasons why some athletes experience positive wellbeing while others struggle remains unclear although, in part, due to methodological limitations of previous research (Atkinson, 2013). To overcome these limitati...

Perfectionism and performance in sport: Exploring non-linear relationships with track and field athletes
Psychol Sport Exerc. 2023 Oct 30:102552. doi: 10.1016/j.psychsport.2023.102552. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe relationship between perfectionism - perfectionistic strivings and perfectionistic concerns - and athletic performance is contested and inconsistent. The present study explored the possibility that one explanation for this inconsistency is the assumption that the relationship is linear. In two samples, we tested alternative non-linear relationships between perfectionism and real-world competitive athletic performance. Sample one comprised 165 Swedish track and field athletes (57 % competing in female category, ...
