Professional development of sport psychology practitioners: From systematic review to a model of development
We present the interaction of these developmental phases, elements, and processes in the form of a sport psychology-specific process model of PD. We discuss the implications of this model and its potential contribution to future research, supervision, and training programs. Yet, we also acknowledge how a focus on Anglophone and Western cultural contexts and a lack of methodological transparency are limitations of the extant literature.PMID:37866685 | DOI:10.1016/j.psychsport.2023.102550 (Source: Psychology of Sport and Exercise)

Promoting mental health and wellbeing among young males in sporting contexts: A systematic review
CONCLUSIONS: This review suggests that there is scope to improve the capacity of sports-based interventions to affect positive change in the mental health of male youth. The findings from this review also have important implications for the development and evaluation of sports-based interventions targeted at young males in future.PMID:37866686 | DOI:10.1016/j.psychsport.2023.102551 (Source: Psychology of Sport and Exercise)

Associations of physical activity dose and movement quality with executive functions in socioeconomically disadvantaged children aged 5-6  years
This study investigated the association of three different modes of movement assessment, movement proficiency and divergent movement ability (collectively understood as motor competence) and PA dose with executive function in a low socio-economic demographic. Demographics, motor competence, and a combination of motor competence and physical activity were hypothesized to be significantly predictor of executive functions.METHOD: In this cross-sectional study, 360 children aged 5-6 years from deprived areas were assessed using three movement assessments: wrist-worn accelerometery for physical activity dose, Test of Gross Moto...

Analysing experienced and inexperienced cyclists' attentional focus and self-regulatory strategies during varying intensities of fixed perceived effort cycling: A mixed method study
Psychol Sport Exerc. 2023 Oct 14:102544. doi: 10.1016/j.psychsport.2023.102544. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTUsing a think aloud approach during fixed perceived effort exercise is a unique method to explore the decision-making processes that guide the self-regulation of perceived effort during endurance-based activity. In a two-part study, authors investigated the attentional focus and self-regulatory strategies associated with: Part A - perceived effort corresponding to (RPEGET) and above gas exchange threshold (RPE+15%GET); Part B - between experienced and inexperienced cyclists during fixed perceived effort cycling tas...

Effect of acute concurrent exercise training and the mediating role of lactate on executive function: An ERP study
Psychol Sport Exerc. 2023 Sep 9;70:102531. doi: 10.1016/j.psychsport.2023.102531. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBoth acute aerobic (AE) and resistance exercise (RE) have been acknowledged to be effective methods in enhancing executive function and brain-related P3 amplitudes. Nevertheless, the effect of acute concurrent exercise training (CET), combining both AE and RE, on executive function remains subject to speculation. Moreover, investigation of the mechanisms that underlie improvements in executive function would facilitate scientific understanding. Notably, lactate has emerged as a candidate among several potential m...

Do attentional focus cues affect the type or number of explicit rules? Proof of concepts of the self-invoking trigger or explicit knowledge hypotheses
Psychol Sport Exerc. 2023 Oct 11;70:102547. doi: 10.1016/j.psychsport.2023.102547. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTInternal focus has been shown to be detrimental to performance by disrupting the motor system, whereas external focus enhances performance by promoting automaticity. One hypothesis, which explains the underlying mechanism of the disruption of the motor system, proposes that internal focus affects the type of thoughts (explicit rules) by invoking self-conscious, evaluative thoughts (McKay et al., 2015). In contrast, another hypothesis proposes that internal focus increases the number of explicit rules, loading wo...

The Homeless World Cup through storytelling: The narratives of Street Soccer players from Scotland and the USA
CONCLUSIONS: Through creative narrative approaches, this study presents novel and engaging accounts of players' experiences before, during, and after the event. We also identify potential safeguarding concerns that can be addressed through trauma-informed practices.PMID:37820863 | DOI:10.1016/j.psychsport.2023.102549 (Source: Psychology of Sport and Exercise)
