Personality traits as an organizing framework for personality pathology
AbstractWe review evidence establishing important parallels between the general structure of psychopathology, the more specific structure of personality pathology and the structure of normal ‐range personality. We then present data to explicate the nature of associations between the alternative model of personality disorder (AMPD)—as operationalized by the Personality Inventory forDSM ‐5—and the domains and facets subsumed within the five‐factor model of personality. Our data demonstrate substantial links between four of the five domains within these models but also indicate that the AMPD could be realigned to en...

Correlates between Five ‐Factor Model traits and the Revised Diagnostic Interview for Borderlines dimensions in an adolescent clinical sample
In this study, we examined associations between FFM traits and BPD characteristics in a group of clinical and non‐clinical a dolescents.MethodWe evaluated the correlations between the FFM personality traits, as measured by the NEO ‐Five‐Factor Inventory and BPD characteristics as measured by the DIB‐R in a sample of adolescents (N = 162).ResultsConsistent with previous research, BPD dimensions were highly associated with high neuroticism, low conscientiousness, low agreeableness and to a somewhat lesser extent with low extraversion. Assessing the relationships between self ‐reports of childhood adverse experiences and DSM‐5 alternative model of personality disorder traits and domains: A study on Italian community‐dwelling adults
AbstractA body of research suggests that child maltreatment may not represent an uncommon phenomenon. Adverse childhood experiences have been consistently linked to a variety of mental disorders, including personality disorder. Starting from these considerations, we aimed at testing the associations between retrospective self ‐reports of childhood abuse and Personality Inventory forDSM ‐5 (PID ‐5) traits and domains in a sample of community‐dwelling adult participants (N = 369; 41.2% male). PID‐5 scales yielded 63 (52.5%) rank‐order correlations with self‐reports of childhood abuse that were significant at ...

Measurement and mental health disparities: Psychopathology classification and identity assessment
AbstractMental health disparities research compares groups of individuals with regard to their mental health status, and numerous studies have reported significant and burdensome disparities across populations. This literature is based almost entirely on traditional mental disorder constructs (e.g. major depressive disorder and borderline personality disorder) as defined by official nosologies, but these disorders are associated with numerous problems of reliability and validity. Advances in psychopathology classification research have converged on an alternative conceptualization of mental disorder structure, which compri...

Metacognitively oriented psychotherapy for schizotypal personality disorder: A two ‐case series
AbstractSchizotypal personality disorder represents a broad range of maladaptive behaviour, which has been linked to both personality disorder and schizophrenia spectrum disorders; however, to date, little effort has been devoted to developing psychosocial treatment approaches to address it. In response, we conducted two case studies exploring the effects of two metacognitively oriented forms of psychotherapy: metacognitive interpersonal therapy and metacognitive reflection and insight therapy for patients with schizotypal personality disorder. We chose these two forms of therapy as they have been successfully delivered, r...

AbstractThe present study examined differences between fibromyalgia patients and healthy controls on anger rumination, mental health and quality of life and tested anger rumination as a mediator of patient –control differences in mental health and quality of life. Participants were a propensity score‐matched sample of 58 fibromyalgia patients and 58 healthy controls. Participants completed measures of anger rumination, depression and anxiety and quality of life. Patients were higher than controls on all anger rumination scales and depression and anxiety and lower on quality of life. All anger rumination scales were rel...

The personality disorder patient pathway: Service user and clinical perspectives
ConclusionsThe care pathway for individuals with personality disorder is unclear to clinicians and service users, and elements of the pathway are disjointed and not working as effectively as they could. Guidelines recommended by National Institute for Health and Care Excellence are not being followed. Specialist psychological interventions should be available to ensure consistent and stable care provision. © 2019 John Wiley& Sons, Ltd. (Source: Personality and Mental Health)

Lack of meaning, purpose and direction in life in personality disorder: A comparative quantitative approach using Livesley's General Assessment of Personality Disorder
AbstractMeaning in life is a motivational force and an existential theme for many people. The concept of meaning comprises purpose, comprehension and mattering. According to the Section III model of personality disorder (DSM ‐5), lack of meaning, purpose and direction in life is part of personality dysfunction. The present study aimed to determine the association between personality disorder (PD), personality dysfunction and ‘lack of meaning, purpose and direction’ as a distinct facet of personality dysfunction, using Livesley's self‐report questionnaire—the General Assessment of Personality Disorder. This compar...
