The neurobiology of social deficits in female patients with borderline personality disorder: The importance of oxytocin
ConclusionsContrary to our expectations, we did not find lower serum OXT levels in the BPD group. However, BPD patients in a romantic relationship had higher levels of serum OXT than single BPD patients. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. (Source: Personality and Mental Health)

Traits across the personality hierarchy differentially relate to positive and negative affect: Evidence for the predictive validity of empirically derived meta ‐traits
Abstract There is increasing interest in the construct validity of higher‐order domains of the Big Five personality traits. A total of 831 persons from the Swiss population completed the International Personality Item Pool and an adaptation of the Positive and Negative Affect Scales. Using Goldberg's bass‐ackwards method, we found evidence for the general factor of personality (GFP) and the two meta‐traits of positive emotionality (blend of low neuroticism and high extraversion) and constraint (blend of high agreeableness and conscientiousness). In association with positive affect, the explanatory power of the GFP (r...

Borderline personality disorder features, emotion dysregulation and non ‐suicidal self‐injury: Preliminary findings in a sample of community‐dwelling Italian adolescents
Abstract In order to assess the relationships among borderline personality disorder features, non‐suicidal self‐injury (NSSI) and emotion dysregulation, 122 community‐dwelling Italian adolescents were administered by the Italian translations of the Borderline Personality Features Scale for Children‐11, the Deliberate Self‐Harm Inventory and the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS). Regression models showed that both Deliberate Self‐Harm Inventory (DSHI) and DERS scores significantly predicted Borderline Personality Features Scale for Children‐11 total score; moreover, the DSHI total score significa...

Mapping the road from childhood adversity to personality disorder: The role of unresolved states of mind
This study explores the relationship between childhood adversities, unresolved states of mind, PD diagnosis and psychiatric distress. Two hundred forty‐five adult participants, 124 from a clinical PD group and 121 non‐psychiatric controls were assessed using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM‐IV, the Cassel Baseline Questionnaire, the Symptom Checklist‐90‐R and the Adult Attachment Interview, in order to ascertain presence of PD, childhood adversity, level of psychiatric distress and unresolved states of mind. Within the overall unresolved (U‐overall) attachment category, a distinction was made between u...

How do mothers with borderline personality disorder mentalize when interacting with their infants?
Abstract Mothers with borderline personality disorder (BPD) have been theorized to have decreased mentalization ability, which is the capacity to perceive and interpret mental states. This could increase the risk for troubled relationships with their infants and therefore have adverse consequences for child social and emotional development. Mind‐mindedness (MM), which codes the mother's references to her infant's mental states during an interaction, is one method of indexing mothers' mentalizing ability. However, research has yet to examine MM in mothers with BPD. Our objective was to assess the MM ability of 38 mothers ...

Individual differences in positive and negative emotion regulation: Which strategies explain variability in loneliness?
Abstract Loneliness is the distressing feeling accompanying the perception that one's social needs are not being met by one's social relationships. Conceptual models point to a role for cognitive factors in this experience. Because research on determinants of loneliness is sparse, this study investigates associations between individual differences in emotion regulation (ER) and loneliness. Participants (N = 116) completed measures of loneliness, and a vignette‐based measure of adaptive and maladaptive ER in response to positive and negative scenarios. Regression analyses indicated that the regulation of positive and ...

Is borderline personality disorder only a mental health problem?
The objective of this multicentre study was to compare the utilization of physical health services by patients with severe BPD (n = 36) with that of two control groups: one with other personality disorders (PDs) (n = 38) and one with matched subjects randomly selected from the general population (n = 165). Information was drawn from an insurance database collected over a 5‐year period. The results showed that the BPD group had a higher mean number of medication prescriptions (377.3 vs. 97.4, p < 0.001), general medical consultations (34.4 vs. 13.2, p < 0.05) and days of medical or surgical hospi...

Measuring child personality when child personality was not measured: Application of a thin ‐slice approach
Abstract Recent efforts have demonstrated that thin‐slice (TS) assessment—or assessment of individual characteristics after only brief exposure to that individual's behaviour—can produce reliable and valid measurements of child personality traits. The extent to which this approach can be generalized to archival data not designed to measure personality, and whether it can be used to measure personality pathology traits in youth, is not yet known. Archival video data of a parent–child interaction task was collected as part of a clinical intervention trial for aggressive children (N = 177). Unacquainted observers ...
