How is type D personality associated with the major psychological outcomes in noncardiac chest pain patients?
This study aimed to determine the psychological comorbidities that type D personality is associated with, in patients with NCCP. The participants of this cross-sectional study were 360 patients diagnosed with NCCP. Patients filled out questionnaires about sociodemographic, behavioral, and clinical factors (severity of pain, somatization, cardiac anxiety, fear of body sensations, depression, and type D personality). Type D personality was more prevalent among female (p <  0.005), and those people having this personality showed lower sleep quality (p = 0.001) and sexual life satisfaction (p <  0.001) and mo...

The role of sleep disturbance in the associations of borderline personality disorder symptom severity to nonsuicidal self ‐injury and suicide risk among patients with substance use disorders
This study sought to examine the explanatory role of sleep disturbance in the associations of borderline personality disorder (BPD) symptom severity to nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) and suicide risk within an at-risk sample of patients with substance use disorders (SUDs), as well as whether emotion regulation (ER) difficulties account for significant variance in the relations of sleep disturbance to NSSI and suicide risk. Patients in a residential SUD treatment facility (N = 166) completed a diagnostic interview and questionnaires. Results revealed significant indirect relations of BPD symptom severity to both NSSI fr...

Post ‐traumatic disorder symptom severity in the perspective of hierarchical taxonomy of psychopathology spectra and dysfunctional personality domains among trauma‐exposed community‐dwelling women
AbstractTo assess the relationships between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) components, Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology (HiTOP) spectra, and dysfunctional personality domains, the Post-Traumatic Checklist forDSM-5 (PCL-5); the Personality Inventory forDSM-5-Brief Form+ (PID-5BF+); and self-report measures of HiTOP Internalizing, Thought Disorders, and Externalizing spectra were administered to 387 trauma-exposed Italian community-dwelling women. Before structural equation modeling (SEM), measurement components of models were assessed using confirmatory factor analyses. Both taxometric and Gaussian mixture an...

The Habitual Tendencies Questionnaire: A tool for psychometric individual differences research
AbstractHabits are automatic responses to learned stimuli or contextual cues that are insensitive to goals. Although habits may allow for automated behaviours that increase efficiency in our daily lives, an over-reliance on habits has been suggested to contribute to disorders such as obsessive –compulsive disorder (OCD). There are currently few established measures of individual differences in habitual tendencies. To fill this gap, the present study generated and validated a novel 11-item scale, the Habitual Tendencies Questionnaire (HTQ), to measure individual differences in habitual t endencies in the general populatio...

Social impairment and personality disorder features among older adults: An application of the circumplex model
AbstractThe interpersonal circumplex is a model that places interpersonal problems along two axes (communion and agency), resulting in eight theoretically derived patterns. Application of the circumplex to older adults is poorly understood. Subsequently, this study examined relationships between the interpersonal circumplex and personality disorder (PD) features among older adults, since social impairments are core components of PDs. Two models of PDs were examined: the traditional model of 10 PDs and the Alternative Model of PDs (AMPD) with its personality functioning and pathological personality trait features. Older adu...

Analysis of the interaction between personality dysfunction and traits in the statistical prediction of physical aggression: Results from outpatient and community samples
AbstractThe Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD), included in theDiagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.) and the World Health Organization'sInternational Classification of Diseases (11th ed.; ICD-11) are, respectively, hybrid categorical-dimensional and dimensional frameworks for personality disorders (PDs). Both models emphasize personality dysfunction and personality traits. Previous studies investigating the links between the AMPD and ICD-11, and self-reported physical aggression have mostly focused on traits and did not take into account the potential interaction between personalit...

Psychotherapeutic case formulation: Plan analysis for narcissistic personality disorder
DiscussionIn the treatment of psychological disorders, precise case formulations allow therapists for making clinically appropriate decision, personalizing the intervention and gaining insight into the client's subjective experience. In the prototypical plan structure we developed for NPD, clients strive to strengthen their self-esteem and avoid loss of control, criticism and confrontation as well as to get support, understanding and solidarity. When beginning psychotherapy with a client presenting with NPD, the therapist can use these plans as valuable information to help writing tailored, and therefore more efficient, ca...

Multidimensional conceptualization of identity and psychopathology: Assessing mental health disparities from an intersectional and dimensional framework
AbstractBlack, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) currently constitute 40% of the US population and will become the majority by 2045. Current mental health systems have not sufficiently accounted for disparities, inequities, and social determinants impacting BIPOC lives. We outline several advances that could improve mental health disparities research. Research on BIPOC requires mental health assessment accurately capturing multiple facets of one's identity, taking into account the complexities of multifaceted historical oppression. Assessing (personality) psychopathology in a dimensional and hierarchical manner could...

Catastrophizing, negative affectivity, and borderline personality disorder
AbstractThe core features of borderline personality disorder (BPD) include problematic interpersonal relationships, behavioral and affective dysregulation, identity problems, and cognitive dysregulation. Cognitive dysregulation, such as catastrophizing, rumination, and thought suppression, contributes to emotion dysregulation in BPD. Previous research suggested that thought suppression fully mediated the relationship between negative affect intensity/reactivity and BPD symptoms. We predicted that catastrophizing similarly will serve as a mediator between negative affect intensity/reactivity and BPD symptoms. Two samples co...

Interactions between neuroticism and stressful life events predict response to pharmacotherapy for major depression: A CAN ‐BIND 1 report
AbstractExposure to stressful life events and individual differences in the personality trait neuroticism are important risk factors that interact to predict major depressive disorder (MDD). Less is known about their effect on treatment response in depression. Here, we examine whether stressful life events experienced prior to and during treatment interact with neuroticism to predict response to 16-week pharmacotherapy for MDD. Participants included 159 outpatients with MDD who were initially treated with 8  weeks of escitalopram. Those who responded to the initial treatment continued on escitalopram monotherapy, whereas ...

Development and initial evaluation of the ICD ‐11 personality disorder severity scale: PDS‐ICD‐11
ConclusionThis initial construction study suggests that the PDS-ICD-11 constitutes a promising instrument that provides a quick impression of the severity of personality dysfunction according to the official ICD-11 PD guidelines. Clearly, more research is needed to corroborate its validity and utility. The PDS-ICD-11 scale is provided as online supporting information. (Source: Personality and Mental Health)

Is social function a good proxy measure of personality disorder?
ConclusionsSocial functioning recorded in either a 5-item or 8-item self-rating is a useful proxy measure of personality disturbance and may be the core of disorder. (Source: Personality and Mental Health)

Comorbid early psychosis and borderline personality disorder: Conceptualizing clinical overlap, etiology, and treatment
We present a narrative review of the clinical overlap between BPD and psychosis spectrum symptoms. Both conditions have unstable temporal course, and both are marked by functional impairment, increased suicide risk, and higher rates of psychiatric inpatient services. We then review evidence-based treatments for psychosis and BPD, emphasizing treatments for early presentations of these symptoms and initial research considering treatments for the overlap. Psychotherapies with the strongest empirical support include cognitive behavioral models, with BPD showing limited response to adjunctive pharmacotherapy. We end by discuss...
