Stability of resilience in times of the COVID ‐19 pandemic
AbstractThere is disagreement among researchers regarding the conceptualization of resilience as a dynamic state or stable trait. Aiming to shed light on the state-versus-trait debate, we explored the stability and construct validity of four of the most frequently utilized state or trait resilience scales in a longitudinal assessment. Additionally, we examined the predictive validity of these scales. Our study was conducted before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, which served as collectively experienced adversity. Correlations among the resilience scales and among resilience scales and Big Five personality traits were str...

Exploring the associations between psychodynamic constructs and psychopathology: A network approach
This study uses network analysis to explore these associations. We computed a cross-sectional partial correlation network between psychodynamic constructs (i.e., personality functioning, interpersonal relations, and active and passive modes of intrapsychic conflicts according to the Operationalized Psychodynamic Diagnostics [OPD] system) and psychopathology (i.e., depression and somatization) in a naturalistic sample of 341 adults registering for psychodynamic outpatient therapy. We estimated node centrality, node predictability, and bridge symptoms and used community detection analysis. Bootstrap methods were applied to as...

The joint hierarchical structure of psychopathology and dysfunctional personality domain indicators among community ‐dwelling adults
AbstractTo examine the hierarchical structure of psychopathology and dysfunctional personality domains, 2416 Italian community-dwelling adult volunteers were administered a set of psychometrically sound psychopathology measures and the Personality Inventory forDSM-5 Brief Form+ (PID-5-BF+). Parallel analysis, minimum average partial, and very simple structure results suggested that 1 –6 principal components (PCs) should be retained. Goldberg's bass-ackwards model of the joint psychopathology measure and PID-5-BF+ ipsatized domain scale correlation matrix evidenced a hierarchical structure that was consistent with the wor...

Childhood emotional abuse and motor impulsiveness among male violent inmates with antisocial personality disorder
This study aimed to explore the relationship among childhood maltreatment, impulsiveness and antisocial personality through a questionnaire survey of violent male inmates. We found that the scores of inmates with Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD) in Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-28 item Short Form (CTQ-SF) and Barratt Impulsive Scale-11 (BIS-11) were higher than those in the Non-Antisocial personality group, and there was a significant correlation between the scores of CTQ-SF and BIS-11. We found that the interaction between impulsivity and childhood abuse predicts ASPD levels. Moreover, motor and non-planning impuls...

Just try it: Preliminary results of a six ‐month therapy for borderline personality disorder
AbstractBorderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is labeled as a personality disorder with impulsivity issues regarding relationships, risky behavior, and emotional dysregulation. This personality disorder is still considered to be hard-to-treat condition even though responses to treatment have improved significantly. In this field, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy is recognized as one of the most efficient therapeutical approaches, and some versions adapted from this gold-standard treatment proved their effectiveness in clinical settings. We tested the 6-month cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) protocol ECCCLORE, composed of t...

Systems Training for Emotional Predictability and Problem Solving for borderline personality disorder: A systematic review
AbstractSystems Training for Emotional Predictability and Problem Solving (STEPPS) is a group treatment program for patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD). The program was intended to be highly accessible, both for patients and therapists. During STEPPS, patients are taught emotion regulation and behavior management skills. This systematic review synthesizes the current empirical status of STEPPS, focusing on research designs, quality of studies, target groups, protocols, and outcome. We selected 20 studies, with three randomized controlled trials. Patients with BPD, subthreshold BPD, and patients with BPD and...

Personality disorder and mild traumatic brain injury
AbstractMild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) poses risk to the neurocognitive, emotional, and financial well-being of affected individuals. While aggression and impulsivity have been examined in relation to mTBI, little work has been done to evaluate the relationship between history of mTBI and personality disorder (PD). The authors examined the associations between history of mTBI and PD in a control group without history of mTBI (N = 1189) and individuals with history of mTBI (N = 267). Results demonstrated that any PD diagnosis is a significant risk factor for mTBI (p <  0.001). Cluster B diagnoses, particu...

New data toward fulfilling the promise of the ICD ‐11 severity criterion
AbstractGreat progress has been made in furthering our understanding of the long-term course of personality pathology. However, our knowledge about the long-term outcomes of personality disorder, thus far, is based on a polythetic and categorical definition of personality disorder. This special issue brings together a set of papers reporting on the results of the 30-year prospective study, the Nottingham Study of Neurotic Disorder, in addition to presenting a study protocol for a future study, the Boston (UK) Personality Project, and results from a study of lived experience of individuals who have been in treatment for per...

To love and work: A longitudinal study of everyday life factors in recovery from borderline personality disorder
This study sought to examine the features that contribute to response or non-response for individuals at different stages of recovery from BPD over a longitudinal follow-up. Participants were individuals with a diagnosis of BPD that were followed up after 1  year of receiving psychological treatment. There were no significant differences between participants at intake across key indices; however, at 1-year follow-up, two groups were distinguishable as either ‘functioning well’ (n = 23) or ‘functioning poorly’ (n = 25) based on symptomatology and functional impairment. Participant qualitative responses wer...

The recording of personality strengths: An analysis of the impact of positive personality features on the long ‐term outcome of common mental disorders
AbstractAlthough personality strengths are assessed frequently in occupational and managerial settings and in children, they have been less used in studies of personality disorder. The aim of this study is to examine the impact of a measure of personality strengths derived from the comprehensive version of the Personality Assessment Schedule (CPAS) (i.e., positive and reinforcing traits) on clinical symptoms and functioning. Eighty-nine patients with anxiety and depression seen at the 30-year follow-up point in a cohort study (Nottingham Study of Neurotic Disorder) were administered the Comprehensive version of the PAS (CP...

Relations between attachment, identity and borderline personality disorder symptom severity in male inpatients with alcohol use disorder
Insecure attachment style and borderline personality disorder (BPD) symptoms are related to the severity of alcohol use disorder (AUD) and can also complicate its course and treatment. We propose a theoretical model of relationships between adult attachment style and BPD and AUD symptom severity in which the sense of identity is a mediator. The aim of our study was to test this model in a sample of male inpatients with AUD. Male inpatients with AUD (N = 114) aged 22–72 years (M = 43.05;SD = 9.84) completed the Experiences in Close Relationships-Revised, the Multidimensional Identity Questionnaire, the Alcoh...

Matching ICD ‐11 personality status to clinical management in a community team—The Boston (UK) Personality Project: Study protocol
AbstractEpidemiological studies show 30% to 50% of all patients in community mental health teams have personality disorders. These are normally comorbid with other psychiatric disorders, often as Galenic syndromes, and are seldom identified. In the Boston (UK) Personality Project all patients under a community health service in Boston in Lincolnshire will be asked to agree to have their personality status assessed using scales recording the new ICD-11 classification, together with clinical ratings, social function and satisfaction. A control group of 100 patients from an adjacent service of similar demographics (Spalding) ...
