Long-term Outcome After Acute Peripheral Facial Palsy
Purpose: To analyze long-term outcomes in a large cohort of patients with acute peripheral facial palsy (APFP). Methods: Hospital-based, cross-sectional study. Data were abstracted from the electronic medical record. Time to recovery was assessed with Kaplan-Meier survival analyses. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with outcome. Results: Three hundred seventy-two patients with APFP seen at a tertiary hospital between February 2015 and March 2021 were analyzed. Seasonal variation of APFP peaked in the early fall (September 29) and had a peak-to-low ratio of 1.36 (...

An Immunohistochemical Study of Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor in Sebaceous Carcinoma of the Eyelid: A Potential Therapeutic Target
Purpose: To investigate the relationship between epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) expression and clinicopathological characteristics in sebaceous carcinoma (SbC) of the eyelid. Methods: Clinical records and microscopic slides of 102 cases of SbC in the eyelid were reviewed. An immunohistochemical antibody for EGFR was employed. Differentiation, pagetoid spread, and mitosis were evaluated. Results: Of the 102 patients, 46 (45.1%) cases were male and 56 (54.9%) cases were female (male:female, 1:1.2). The mean age of the patients was 57.32 ± 13.23 years (range, 26–85 years). Fifty-two (51%) cases o...

Telemedicine for Preoperative Evaluation of Upper Eyelid Malposition: Reliability of Diagnosis and Surgical Plan
The objective of this study is to investigate interobserver and intraobserver reliability of eyelid and brow position assessment and surgical plan when comparing photography-based and face-to-face evaluation. Methods: This was an observational study conducted at a single academic center. Thirty randomly selected patients who had completed an in-office evaluation for chief complaint of “drooping eyelids” between June 2019 and March 2020 were included. Virtual assessment of brow position, dermatochalasis, blepharoptosis, and margin-reflex distance 1 was performed by 2 oculoplastic surgeons based on external photog...

The Effect of Lighting and Photograph Exposure on Perceived Attractiveness
Purpose: To assess the effect of various lighting conditions and photograph exposures on perceived attractiveness. Methods: In the first experiment, 5 variably exposed photographs were taken of 10 subjects using a consistent lighting condition (45° superior box light). In the second experiment, 10 subjects were photographed under variable lighting conditions with consistent exposure: 1) 90° overhead box light, 2) ring light, 3) 45° superior box light, 4) built-in camera flash, 5) 2 straight on box lights, each 45° from midline, and 6) natural light. Participants were instructed to maintain a neutral expressi...

Implantation of a Coronary Stent Into the Canaliculus of a Human Cadaver: A Pilot Study
Conclusions: Canalicular obstructions can often be a source of therapeutic challenges. Our pilot study shows that a drug-eluting coronary stent can be implanted with precision into the canaliculus of a human cadaver. We propose that at least some canalicular obstructions could be treated using a novel rigid mesh tube similar to drug-eluting coronary stents. (Source: Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery)

Does Multimodal Treatment Improve Eye and Life Salvage in Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma of the Lacrimal Gland?
Conclusions: Multimodal treatment with sequential neoadjuvant chemotherapy, followed by surgery, extended-field stereotactic EBRT, and adjuvant chemotherapy seems relatively more effective in providing local tumor control and eye salvage and in minimizing the risk of systemic metastasis in ACC of the lacrimal gland. A Retrospective Study of SVF-gel Compared With Nanofat Combined With High-density Fat in the Treatment of Early Periorbital Aging
Conclusion: SVF-gel and nanofat+high-density fat are effective for restoring volume in the periorbital region and for periorbital rejuvenation in early periorbital aging. The reoperation rate was significantly lower and patient satisfaction scores were significantly higher in patients administered SVF-gel to restore volume in the periorbital region compared with patients administered nanofat+high-density fat. Echographic Assessment of Extraocular Muscle Response to Teprotumumab
Purpose: To evaluate extraocular muscle response to teprotumumab using orbital echography in thyroid eye disease. Methods: This retrospective study included adult thyroid eye disease patients with pre- and post-teprotumumab orbital echography. Data collected included: age, Hertel measurements, clinical activity score, Gorman diplopia scores, ocular motility, and recti muscle diameters measured by echography. The patient’s more proptotic eye before treatment initiation was designated as the study orbit. Ocular motility was assessed by totaling the ductions in all 4 cardinal directions. Orbital echography was ob...

Phakomatous Choristomas: A Case Report and Review of Literature
Conclusion: PC remains a rare entity that should be included in the differential of pediatric eyelid lesions. Surgical excision is curative, and the postoperative clinical course is unremarkable as there have been no reports of recurrence. Prompt recognition and surgical intervention may be warranted due to astigmatism and anisometropia induced by mass effect. (Source: Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery)

Evidence-Based Blepharoplasty: An Analysis of Highly Cited Research Papers
Conclusions: Despite a significant impact on current practice, the level of evidence of the highly cited blepharoplasty research was predominantly low. Robust research methodology, through well-designed studies and standardized outcome measures, is necessary to facilitate evidence synthesis and guide clinical practice. The Ruptured Globe, Sympathetic Ophthalmia, and the 14-Day Rule
Conclusion: Most civilian open globe injuries can be successfully repaired with modern, advanced microsurgical techniques currently available. Because of the exceedingly low risk of SO, even with the severity of open globe trauma during military conflicts being more devastating as a result of the blast and explosive injuries, today every attempt is made to primarily close the eye rather than primarily enucleate it, providing there is enough viable tissue to repair. The 14-day rule for eye removal after severe globe ruptures is not scientifically supported and does not always protect against SO, but the safe time period...
