Nicotinamide and Nonmelanoma Skin Cancers
Oral nicotinamide supplementation may have the potential to reduce the incidence of non-melanoma skin cancers, and although currently unproven, given its favorable side effect profile, supplementation should be considered seriously, particularly in high-risk individuals. Intact Removal of Orbital Lobe Tumors of the Lacrimal Gland, With or Without Lateral Wall Osteotomy
Conclusions: In many cases, large masses within the orbital lobe of the lacrimal gland can be safely removed intact, using the described flip technique without the need for lateral wall osteotomy. (Source: Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery)

The Köllner Tarsoconjunctival Flap for Lower Eyelid Reconstruction: Historical Perspective and Surgical Outcomes of 140 Cases
This study reviews the history, techniques, and outcomes of a large series of patients treated with a modified Köllner flap. Methods: In this observational cohort study, medical records and photographs were reviewed in patients undergoing surgery between 2005 and 2020. Patient demographics, complications, secondary interventions, and outcomes were evaluated. Results: Marginal defect size ranged from 12 to 41 mm among the 140 study patients. Ancillary procedures included lower eyelid conjunctival flaps (n = 64) and septal orbicularis flaps (n = 68). The anterior lamella was reconstructed with skin grafts (n...

Upper Eyelid Contour Changes After Orbital Decompression in Graves Orbitopathy
Conclusions: Orbital decompression affects the lateral eyelid contour and diminishes the amount of lateral eyelid retraction surgery necessary to correct the flare sign. In 40% of the patients, the eyelid contour is normalized with proptosis reduction only. (Source: Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery)

Recurrence of Distensible Orbital Venous-dominant Venolymphatic Malformations After Sclerotherapy Versus Embolization With Excision
Purpose: Treatment for orbital venolymphatic malformations (VLMs) commonly includes 3 major options: sclerotherapy, surgery, and embolization followed by surgical excision. Each has certain advantages, although it is not clear whether all are effective. The authors characterize the clinical course for a series of patients with distensible orbital venous-dominant VLM treated with sclerotherapy and/or embolization with excision. Methods: In this cross-sectional cohort study, patients affected by distensible orbital venous-dominant VLM presenting to the orbital and ophthalmic plastic surgery service from 2014 to 20...

Congenital Conjunctival Cysts of the Orbit
Conclusion: Congenital conjunctival cysts are rare and usually present with a palpable mass in the upper eyelid sulcus. A significant proportion of these cysts have an intimate relationship with the trochlea, or the superior rectus, levator palpebrae or superior oblique muscles and, to minimize the risk of postoperative diplopia or ptosis, particular care must be exercised during surgery. Laser Speckle Contrast Imaging of the Blood Perfusion in Glabellar Flaps Used to Repair Medial Canthal Defects
Conclusions: The rapid reperfusion of the glabellar flap may be explained by its connection to the vascular network via the flap pedicle. In flaps longer than 20 mm, the distal part can be considered a free skin transplant, and a combination of a glabellar flap and a free skin graft could then be considered. The Effect of Sleep Position Preference on Eyelid and Eyebrow Symmetry
Purpose: To investigate the relationship between sleep position preference and eyebrow and eyelid position and degree of upper eyelid dermatochalasis. Methods: A prospective study evaluating the impact of sleep position on facial asymmetry was conducted at an academic ophthalmology department. Eligibility criteria included the absence of periocular-altering trauma or surgery, contact lens use, or other periorbital disease processes. Patients reported their sleep position preference on a questionnaire. Standardized digital photographs of patients were obtained, and Image J software was used for measurements and c...
