Social Media: Facilitator or Roadblock to Nutrition and Other Science Communication?
Much has been written about the benefits—and challenges—of social media platforms in communicating health and nutrition science to the public. It has generally been assumed that cyber platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, SnapChat, and similar businesses function, in effect, like communication tools, albeit with some susceptibility to misinformation and disinformation. Less attention has been paid to the power of the downside of these new communication tools, which may be far more vulnerable to misinformation and disinformation than previously believed. More strenuous communication strategies may need to be d...

How Community Health Workers Can Improve Workforce Diversity and Dietary Outcomes
This article describes the role of community health workers (CHWs), explores how and why CHWs are used in nutrition education to improve patient outcomes, examines the potential of using CHWs to diversify the credentialed workforce, and identifies challenges to incorporating more CHWs into nutrition programs. Malnutrition and Frailty Screening in Older Adults: Challenges and Opportunities for Dietetic Professionals
We conducted a Web-based survey of Commission on Dietetic Registration members to identify opportunities and challenges related to malnutrition and frailty screening among older adults (≥65 years old). Of the 9279 surveys sent out in emails, 903 registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs) returned the surveys (10% response rate), and of those who responded, 576 RDNs were working with adults 65 years or older. They reported greater familiarity with screening tools for malnutrition than for frailty and little use of any frailty screening tools. For malnutrition screening, RDNs were most familiar with the body mass index (99%...

(Poly)Phenol Metabolism: A Primer for Practitioners
Fruit- and vegetable-derived (poly)phenols have long been lauded for their potential health benefits in humans. Given their ubiquity and diversity in the diet, fully understanding the mechanisms responsible for their health effects is challenging. In light of this, many investigators have sought to understand the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME) of (poly)phenols, with many now attributing their health effects to the (poly)phenolic metabolites formed within the gastrointestinal tract itself. In addition, given the recognition of the gut microbiome as an important contributor to both (poly)phenol me...

Beef Production: What Are the Human and Environmental Impacts?
Interest in sustainability has grown in the general public and in the nutrition practitioner community. Sustainability is a complex balancing act of considering social, economic, and environmental factors, while respecting cultural and lifestyle differences. Animal source foods, beef in particular, have received much attention in the conversation about sustainable diets and food systems. This review describes how beef is produced in the United States and how beef can fit into a sustainable food system and provides key considerations for incorporating sustainability into dietary guidance for clients and patients. Dietary Nitrate and Nitrite Concentrations in Food Patterns and Dietary Supplements
Inorganic nitrate and nitrite are plant nutrients, legally mandated additives to processed meats, and components of foods and dietary supplements associated with blood pressure–lowering and performance-enhancing effects. Controversy around dietary nitrate and nitrite consumption exists because of the potential for increased risk of certain cancers in adults and methemoglobinemia (ie, blue baby syndrome) in infants. However, more recent evidence suggests that dietary nitrate, as an exogenous source for endogenous nitric oxide production via the human nitrate–nitrite–nitric oxide pathway, exerts blood pressure–loweri...

Dietary Nitrate Supplementation and Exercise-Related Performance
Over the last decade, there has been a growing interest in the utility of nitrate (NO3−) supplementation to improve exercise-related performance. After consumption, dietary NO3− can be reduced to nitric oxide, a free radical gas involved in numerous physiological actions including blood vessel vasodilation, mitochondrial respiration, and skeletal muscle contractile function. Emerging evidence indicates that dietary NO3− supplementation has a small but nevertheless significant beneficial effect on endurance performance through the combined effects of enhanced tissue oxygenation and metabolic efficiency in active skele...

Feeding a Person With Advanced Alzheimer’s Disease: An Update
We present a case of a 92-year-old woman diagnosed with AD, from our family medicine practice who was brought to the emergency department with fever and a change in mental status. Previously, neither she nor her family had received counseling about the typical trajectory of AD, nor had she made end-of-life plans. We present a discussion of the typical trajectory of AD, involuntary weight loss, advance care planning related to nutrition, and hydration and alternatives to tube feeding. We added a note describing the initial impact of COVID-19 on care. (Source: Nutrition Today)
