Growing the Dietetics Profession via a Mentorship Program Between Dietitians and Dietetics Students
We describe the development and evaluation of a project that connected dietetics students to Registered Dietitian Nutritionist mentors in the community. An online survey provided project descriptions available to dietetics students, where they ranked the Registered Dietitian Nutritionists they wanted to be matched with for the experience. Mentor-mentee matches resulted in positive improvements; students reported that they had gained knowledge and improved skills and dietitians cultivated leadership skills. Sustainable Eating Patterns Should Be Part of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans
Promoting sustainable eating patterns is an approach to limiting the environmental impact of resource-intensive food production. Incorporating the concept of sustainable eating patterns into the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) would be congruent with established federal policy goals, but societal, economic, and agricultural impacts also need to be considered. Literature from across multiple health professions points to a budding crisis where current and future health professionals are experiencing stress and burnout at an alarming rate that threatens the vitality of our healthcare system and it appears to be no different for professionals engaged in nutrition education and dietetics.
