Psyllium: The Gel-Forming Nonfermented Isolated Fiber That Delivers Multiple Fiber-Related Health Benefits
Psyllium is a natural, predominantly soluble isolated fiber that forms a gel when hydrated. The psyllium gel is not fermented and transits the entire gastrointestinal tract intact. In the small intestine, the psyllium gel increases chyme viscosity, which slows the degradation and absorption of nutrients, which significantly improves fasting blood glucose and hemoglobin A1c levels in individuals with metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes mellitus (eg, −37 mg/dL). This delay in nutrient absorption prolongs satiety/delays hunger, leading to decreased energy intake and weight loss in overweight and obese patients. In the di...

Part 2: Theoretical Intakes of Modern-Day Paleo Diets: Comparison With Dietary Reference Intakes and MyPlate Meal Plans
Conclusion Although certain aspects of promoted Paleo meal plans offer improvements over typical American intakes, Paleo diets should be approached with caution, particularly because of the potential for increased cardiovascular risk owing to low unsaturated/saturated fat ratios. Future research should compare actual intakes with theoretical targets. (Source: Nutrition Today)

Overweight, obesity, T2DM, and the aged population are all increasing, and more attention to T2DM patients is needed. Next steps include improved screening, case finding, and follow-up. At the societal level, enhanced patient management particularly at the primary care level, increased use of diabetes self-management, and better insurance coverage and evaluation of the effectiveness of traditional Chinese medicine as add-ons to conventional treatments should be considered. Part 1: The Origin and Evolution of the Paleo Diet
Public interest in the Paleo diet (PD) has been growing since 2002, following the publication of Dr Loren Cordain's book The Paleo Diet. The premise of this diet is rooted in the ancestral hunter-gatherer pattern of eating, including lean meat, fish/seafood, fruits, vegetables (leaves and tubers), and nuts. Many followers adopt the diet as a healthier alternative to the standard American diet. Today, however, the interpretation and practice of the PD vary. To promote an increased understanding of the PD and its potential health benefits and to also help clinicians better engage with patients following the PD, researchers s...
