Impacts of Shared Governance on Ambulatory Nursing Engagement
An ambulatory shared governance program was initiated in an outlying location of a large academic hospital to evaluate the impact on engagement, process improvement, and safety event reporting. Although the impact of shared governance has been evaluated in inpatient settings, there is a paucity of evidence evaluating the impact in ambulatory settings, specifically clinical care centers in outlying locations. Clinically significant findings were noted, including increase in staff involvement in shared governance initiatives, involvement in insti...

Unit Partners
High turnover of unlicensed assistive personnel can have a significant fiscal impact on health care organizations. More importantly, the attrition rates set the groundwork for missed elements in patient care. Unprecedented employment challenges inspired one group of leaders to develop an innovative cost-effective unit partner role to address turnover rates and support demanding workloads. The role enables flexibility, a nimble orientation structure, and university partnership. Consequently, this role affords nurses further opportunities to practice at the top of their licensure. Julie Zerwic, PhD, RN, FAHA, FAAN
I have been amazed by the importance of the broadening experiences of higher education in enabling social change within health care. I am in awe of how faculty and leadership within colleges and universities align with stakeholders to re-envision future workforces, technologies, and treatments, and leverage this for better patient care. At the University of Iowa, faculty are expected to teach, engage in scholarship, and provide service in areas that will advance nursing and health care, both nationally and internationally. Leadership Coaching to Improve Nursing Unit Practice Councils Effectiveness
Nursing shared governance (SG) provides an opportunity for alignment between frontline team members and nursing leadership. A department of nursing had a mature SG program with many thriving departmental-based SG groups. However, structural processes and guidance for unit-based SG groups were lacking and demonstrated a need for improvement. The General Theory of Effective Multilevel Shared Governance framework provided an opportunity to refocus and improve unit practice councils (UPC). Results demonstrated that UPC leadership competencies can be improved through focused 1:1 leadership coaching by identifying a UPC area of ...

Using Real-Time Data to Mitigate Nurse Burnout
As the largest segment of our health care workforce, nurse burnout and turnover are a major risk to the health of our communities and sustainability of our health care ecosystems. As nurse leaders, it is imperative that we identify the risk for burnout and intervene in a real-time fashion. Leveraging technology solutions that allow for available, accessible, and usable information can support nurse leaders in mitigating the risk of burnout and turnover within their areas of accountability.
