Engaging Frontline Nurses in Building an Electronic Workload Acuity Tool
Nursing leadership and nursing informaticists engaged bedside nurses in the design, build, and evaluation of the Nursing Workload Acuity tool, which produced a robust evaluation process and seamless implementation of an acuity tool embedded in the electronic health record. The tool uses existing data elements from the electronic health record that are mapped to rules to produce a dynamic score. Bedside nurses evaluated content, points, and scoring, which confirmed the acuity tool included necessary elements and matched nursing perception of workload greater than 90% consistently. Developing a Highly Functional Nursing Resource Team With New Graduates in an Academic Health System
Developing a new graduate (NG) nursing resource team (NRT), also called a float team, requires a well-rounded structured program. NRTs provide flexible, cost-effective resource allocation, with proven positive outcomes in employee engagement and retention. NRT leadership developed a thoughtful approach to onboarding NG RNs, with positive outcomes evident in the reduction of salary costs and vacancies/turnover rates, and the increase in positive staff satisfaction/engagement. This paper describes the development and outcomes associated with an innovative approach in addressing contemporary staffing constraints through the d...

The Future of Work: A Human and Machine Mindset
“The Future of Work: A Human and Machine Mindset” is a perspective on the nursing shortage that introduces a human + machines mindset solution. There is a mismatch between demand (too much) and supply (not enough). Traditional methods such as recruiting, hiring, flexible scheduling, and retenti on bonuses won’t solve the problem. We address transforming nursing tasks—identifying tasks best suited for people or technology as well as remodeling the work of the nurse to run in tandem with technology. (Source: Nurse Leader)

Developing Nursing Leadership Skills When Working With Disaster Response Programs
As the frequency and intensity of disasters worsen, now is the time for leaders in nursing to respond, hone their leadership skills, and acquire new competencies. Responding to a disaster requires resilience, knowledge of emergency management, willingness to work in austere environments, and transp...

Someone ’s Been Sitting in My Chair: Leadership Lessons from the Three Bears
Despite consistent turnover in health care chief executive officer (CEO) and president positions, nurse leaders remain a minority in these roles. Nurses have served as heads of hospitals for hundreds of years, dating back to the days of Florence Nightingale. Evidence demonstrates the critical impact of nurse leaders in improving clinical and organizational outcomes, as well as the portability of their knowledge and skills into these positions. In order to increase the percentage of nurses in CEO and president roles, nurse leaders, researchers, academicians, and professional organizations will need to galvanize behind an in...

Cultural Intelligence (CQ)
The world of healthcare reflects the beauty and global diversity of humans across the planet. Cultural intelligence (CQ) is no longer a nice-to-have skillset. Using Human-Centered Leadership in Healthcare as a lens, leaders and teams can take the first step in moving from knowledge to action by completin...

A Comprehensive Model to Support a Resilient Workforce
Historically, low resiliency has been an issue for nursing when considering work and societal-related stressors. COVID-19 has exacerbated the need for supporting policies, structural change, and resilient practices across health care. A new model was developed that guides leaders in considering structural changes to support a more resilient workforce. This model features 5 tiers —transformational leadership; policy change and physical space adaptation; compensation and time; representation; and individual and team self-care practices. Issues of Concern: What Nurse Leaders Say and Need to Consider
During the past few years, nurse leaders were focused on issues affecting frontline providers and increasing financial pressures. Across the sources of data reviewed, the authors have discovered common themes that relate to staffing, mental health/well-being/morale, and finances. These key issues in nursing do not differ much from the nursing or general health care literature. In fact, many of these concerns existed before the pandemic, intensified during the pandemic, and have not been resolved since the pandemic. (Source: Nurse Leader)
