Navigating the New World of Nursing
This is our last issue for the year. 2023 has proven to be a more turbulent year than most leaders had hoped for. The world of nursing and work has changed. Researchers at Gallup have studied workforce and workplace issues for over 50 years. They are well-positioned to look at data across time and advise leaders on the future of the work. When they report that we are amid a massive culture shock in the workplace that will not change, leaders should stop and listen. They warn that there is no going back to the pre-COVID work environment. (Source: Nurse Leader)

A Call for More Nurse Leaders in the C-Suite
Nurse leaders have a wealth of knowledge and experience that positions them well to lead health care organizations, both as Chief Nursing Officers and Chief Executive Officers. The strengths of nurse leaders are directly transferrable to C-Suite decision-making, where compassion for patients, an ability to place the goals of the organization above one’s self-interests, and an understanding of whether an idea c...

Ghosting: An Unprofessional Trend and How to Tackle It
Like you, I have read stories in the popular press about a phenomenon that can occur when young adults (many times millennials), either dating or interacting within other social situations, engage in a behavior that is called “ghosting.” A 2019 New York Times1 article openly discussed ghosting as having sprung primarily from the proliferation of online dating apps. Ghosting can manifest itself in a multiplicity of ways in these types of situations: by failing to respond to a text exchange with someone you have never met, or not returning phone calls, or cutting off contact entirely with someone you may have dated a few...

The Conundrum of Mandated Nurse Staffing Ratios
Since mandated nurse staffing ratios were enacted in California in 1999, legislation has been introduced in other states with little success. The current nursing shortage and its impact on work environments have nurses lobbying legislators once again to pass mandated ratios at the state level. At least in some states, the logic behind the legislation is that many nurses will once again seek employment in acute care settings with better ratios. Nurse advocates confidently tell legislators that there are 5.2 million nurses licensed in the United States, which should be adequate to cover staffing needs. (Source: Nurse Leader)
