Inpatient Cost of Stroke in Beijing: A Descriptive Analysis
Conclusion: Hospitalization cost of stroke was substantial. These findings provide health policymakers and healthcare professionals with evidence to help guide future spending.Neuroepidemiology 2018;51:115 –122 (Source: Neuroepidemiology)

Presentation, Evaluation, Management, and Outcomes of Acute Stroke in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Conclusions: Our review revealed the low use of evidence-based practices for acute stroke care in LMIC. The true use in hospitals that do not conduct this research is probably even lower. Strategies to evaluate and improve health system performance for acute stroke care, including implantation of stroke units and making thrombolysis more available and affordable are needed in LMIC. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Mortality in the United States, 2011 –2014
Conclusions: Previous reports of ALS mortality in the United States showed similar age, sex, and race distributions but with greater age-adjusted mortality rates due to the inclusion of other diseases in the case definition. When using ICD-10 data collected prior to 2017, additional review of multiple-cause of death data is required for the accurate estimation of ALS deaths.Neuroepidemiology 2018;51:96 –103 (Source: Neuroepidemiology)

Future Trends and the Economic Burden of Dementia in Manitoba: Comparison with the Rest of Canada and the World
Dementia is a growing public health concern in Canada. This epidemic is linked to huge human and economic costs. The number of Manitobans (65+) with dementia in 2045 (47,021), representing 2.58% of the Manitoban population, will be 2.3 times that of the year 2015 (20,235). The number of cases of dementia in Manitoba grew by 20.7% from 2015 to 2025, 68.16% from 2015 to 2035 and at an alarming rate of 125% from 2015 to 2045. Importantly, the total economic burden of dementia in Manitoba is close to one billion USD and is expected to grow more than 28 billion USD during the year 2038. The focus of this review is to compare de...

Maternal Folate Intake and Risk of Childhood Brain and Spinal Cord Tumors: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Conclusions: Maternal consumption of folic acid is associated with a reduced risk of CBSCT. Further investigations are necessary to increase the reliability of the results and estimate the relationship between dose-response and the best outcome.Neuroepidemiology 2018;51:82 –95 (Source: Neuroepidemiology)

Regional Subclinical Cerebrovascular Disease Is Associated with Balance in an Elderly Multi-Ethnic Population
Conclusions: WMHV, especially in the anterior cerebral regions, is associated with a lower SPPB. Prevention of subclinical cerebrovascular disease is a potential target to prevent physical decline in the elderly.Neuroepidemiology 2018;51:57 –63 (Source: Neuroepidemiology)

Caffeine Consumption in First-Degree Relatives of Essential Tremor Cases: Evidence of Dietary Modification Before Disease Onset
Conclusion: The balance of caffeinated to decaffeinated beverages is different in FD-ET than Co. These data raise several intriguing questions. Among these is whether relatives of ET cases modify their caffeine consumption before disease onset.Neuroepidemiology 2018;51:64 –70 (Source: Neuroepidemiology)

Prevalence of Multiple Sclerosis in Iceland
Conclusion: MS prevalence was high in Iceland compared to the prevalence mentioned in reports from most of the world, and was similar to prevalence rates in other Nordic countries.Neuroepidemiology 2018;51:50 –56 (Source: Neuroepidemiology)

Spatial Assessment of the Association between Long-Term Exposure to Environmental Factors and the Occurrence of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis in Catalonia, Spain: A Population-Based Nested Case-Control Study
Conclusion: Our results indicate that some environmental factors, in particular those associated with exposure to pesticides and air pollutants as a result of urban traffic, could be associated with the occurrence of ALS.Neuroepidemiology 2018;51:33 –49 (Source: Neuroepidemiology)

Obesity and Migraine: Effect Modification by Gender and Perceived Stress
Conclusions: We found support for gender- and stress-dependent associations between obesity and migraine using a large, heterogeneous adult sample. This underscores the need for evidence-based strategies for weight loss and stress reduction for female migraineurs.Neuroepidemiology 2018;51:25 –32 (Source: Neuroepidemiology)

Comorbidities Are Associated with Altered Health Services Use in Multiple Sclerosis: A Prospective Cohort Study
Discussion: The presence of fatigue and higher physical comorbidity burden were associated with higher rates of health services use. Findings have implications for those examining healthcare burden or organizing health services for persons with MS.Neuroepidemiology 2018;51:1 –10 (Source: Neuroepidemiology)

Epidemiology of Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury in Ireland, 2010 –2015
Conclusions: The epidemiological trends identified are similar to those prevalent elsewhere in the developed world. More incomplete tetraplegia among an older patient population necessitates a review of how acute care and rehabilitation services are delivered.Neuroepidemiology 2018;51:19 –24 (Source: Neuroepidemiology)

Mild Cognitive Impairment and Dementia Show Contrasting Associations with Risk of Cancer
Conclusions: We found that persons with MCI tended to have an increased risk of cancer, whereas those with dementia have a decreased risk. These findings call into question a biological explanation for the inverse link between dementia and cancer, thereby suggesting the presence of methodological bias.Neuroepidemiology 2018;50:207 –215 (Source: Neuroepidemiology)

Estimating the Marginal Causal Effect of Fish Consumption during Adolescence on Multiple Sclerosis: A Population-Based Incident Case-Control Study
Discussion: Subject to limitation of case-control studies in interpreting associations causally, this study suggests that both fresh and canned fish consumptions in adolescence can decrease the risk of MS.Neuroepidemiology 2018;50:111 –118 (Source: Neuroepidemiology)
