Within-Visit Blood Pressure Variability and All-Cause and Stroke Mortality: Thai Epidemiologic Stroke (TES) Study
This study included 19,614 participants aged 45-80 years, who were free o f stroke and had three blood pressure (BP) measurements, taken one minute apart, at baseline. Within-visit systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) variability were expressed as the maximum absolute difference (MAD) between any two readings among the three repeated sequentia l measurements of SBP and DBP respectively. The participants were followed up for mortality. Cox regression analysis was used to identify the association of within-visit BPV with all cause and stroke mortality. Hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval...

Heterogeneity in estimates of incidence and prevalence of narcolepsy: a systematic review and meta-regression analysis
Conclusions: Estimates of incidence/prevalence of narcolepsy could not be pooled reliably with substantial heterogeneity. Incidence/prevalence studies using ICSD and Brighton provided lower estimates than studies using ICD and other criteria. D iagnostic criteria should be standardized when comparing or pooling the incidence/prevalence to understand the epidemiology of narcolepsy. Future studies are needed to focus on the at-risk population for the etiology investigation of narcolepsy. (Source: Neuroepidemiology)

Role of Proxy Respondents in International Stroke Research: Experience of the INTERSTROKE Study
Conclusion Use of proxy respondents enhances the generalisability of international research studies of stroke, by increasing representation of women, patients with severe stroke, older age, and lower education. (Source: Neuroepidemiology)

Are There Racial Differences in Inpatient Outcomes and Treatment Utilization Following Hospitalization for Myasthenia Gravis Exacerbation?
In this study, we used a claim-based database to assess racial differences in outcomes in hospitalized myasthenics. Methods The 2006 to 2014 National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database was queried using the International Classification of Diseases 9th Edition (ICD-9) diagnosis code (358.01) to identify adult patients (age>17 years) undergoing hospitalization for MG. Race was categorized into – White, Black/African American, Asian or Pacific Islander, Hispanic, Native American, and other. Complications assessed included urinary tract infections, acute renal failure, cardiac complications, systemic infection, deep venous th...

Trends in Stroke Burden in Central and Eastern Europe from 1990 –2019
Conclusions: The burden of stroke contributes to the European health gap through preventable premature stroke deaths. There are some very successful countries in stroke burden management from both Central (Slovenia, Czech Republic, and Hungary) and East Europe (Estonia), suggesting that closing the health gap between East and West is a realistic aim. Incidence and Severity of Intracerebral Hemorrhage on Oral Anticoagulation and Antiplatelet Therapy
This study aimed to assess the occurrence of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) in patients using OA or AP registered in the JOINVASC between 2015 and 2020. Higher mortality among OA or AP patients was seen, with a statistically significant difference in mortality within 90 days (38% versus 25%, p=0.025). For patients with OA at the time of ICH, high stroke severity was observed, with a 71% mortality rate. Managing bleeding episodes on OA and AP is key in the effort to prevent cardiovascular death and disability, and improved access to DOAC and reversal agents is in need for this patient population. Statin Therapy for Preventing Recurrent Stroke in Patients with Ischemic Stroke: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Randomised Controlled Trials and Observational Cohort Studies
We examined the outcomes of recurrent stroke (after ischemic stroke) of any type, and separately recurrent ischemic stroke and recurrent hemorrhagic stroke. RCTs and observational cohort studies were meta-analysed separately. Odds ratios (OR) was used to assess the effect of statin therapy. Meta-analysis was conducted using RevMan 5.4 software. Results We retrieved 559 papers in searches, of which 11 RCTs and 12 observational cohort studies were included. Both RCTs and observational studies found that statins reduced the odds of stroke of any type in those with an initial ischemic stroke (11 RCTs: OR=0.87, 95% CI [0.77,0....

Descriptive epidemiology of neurodegenerative diseases: What are the critical questions?
The field of neurodegenerative diseases is a major challenge faced by Public Health and is still in need of robust preventive measures and disease-modifying treatments. Population-based studies can offer the framework in the context primary and secondary prevention of neurodegenerative diseases. The epidemiology of neurodegenerative disorders in the last decades has focused on descriptive studies mainly based on the use of clinical criteria. However, clinical definition is basically insufficient both to well characterize different phenotypes and to make an early diagnosis. Descriptive epidemiology needs a new framework to ...

A Clinical and Epidemiological Prevalence Study on Friedreich ’s Ataxia in Latium, Italy
Conclusions: We estimated the crude and standardized prevalence of FRDA in Latium. A clinical classification (EOFA, LOFA, VLOFA) gave significant correlations. This epidemiological estimate allows monitoring disease prevalence over time in cohort studies and/or for developing disease registry. (Source: Neuroepidemiology)
