Message From the President of the BSR Scientific Council
The Annual Symposium has a longstanding tradition, with specific organ, pathology or modality oriented topics meeting the needs of contemporary imaging of general radiologists in daily practice. With the enthousiastic support of the Young Radiologist Section (YRS) and the responsibles of the specific organ and management sections, a new and inspirating dynamism contributed to a remarkable survival of the meeting, even with the 2020 fullly online Covid-edition. Conversion from MRI to CT Using AI for Fractures
Synthetic CT images reconstructed from MR images is an upcoming artificial intelligence (AI) tool for radiologists. It has been validated for detection of erosions at the sacroiliac joints and validation for other applications is ongoing – with high expectations. The technique uses deep learning, a subtype of machine learning, to reconstruct the images. By adding one MR sequence and some automated postprocessing, the radiologist obtains synthetic CT images which can be multiplanar reformatted. One of the main applications will lik ely be the more detailed evaluation of fractures on MRI. Once validated, the possibilities ...

Acute Arthritis/Osteomyelitis in Children
OSTEOMYELITIS IN CHILDREN: Osteomyelitis (OM) is defined as an infection of the bone marrow and adjacent osseous structures with potential surrounding soft tissue extent. It can occur at any age, generally in children 1 –16 years old. In children, it is predominantly caused by hematogenous spread of infection, typically bacterial. Generally, the metaphysis is involved. Transphyseal spread to the epiphysis and joint is rare but can occur in children younger than 18 months, or in older children with closed growth p lates, due to a different blood perfusion to the epiphysis. The first imaging modality of choice is conventio...

Digital Breast Tomosynthesis Complements Two-Dimensional Synthetic Mammography for Secondary Examination of Breast Cancer
Conclusion:SM/DBT had a similar performance to FFDM/DBT in detecting breast abnormalities but requires less radiation. DBT complements SM to improve accuracy to a level equivalent to that of FFDM. Taken together, SM/DBT may be a good substitute for FFDM/DBT for the secondary examination of breast cancer. Published on 2021-11-05 10:41:09 (Source: Journal of the Belgian Society of Radiology)

Alexander Disease
Main teaching point: The main differential diagnosis of leukodystrophy associated with macrocephaly consists of Alexander disease, Canavan disease, and megalencephalic leukodystrophy with subcortical cysts. Distinguishing imaging characteristics of Alexander disease are an apicoposterior gradient of white matter involvement and a periventricular T2-hypointense rim. Added Value of Dual-Energy CT in COVID-19 Pneumopathy
Teaching point: The use of dual-energy instead of conventional single-energy computed tomography pulmonary angiogram can provide additional value concerning the diagnosis of COVID-19 and its complications, especially in the detection of small pulmonary embolism. Teenage Neurologic Manifestation of a Complex Brain Malformation Consisting of Gray Matter Heterotopia, Schizencephaly and Absent Septum Pellucidum
Teaching point: Since some minor congenital brain defects manifest long after birth, even in adults they should be kept in the differential of new epileptic seizures or focal neurologic deficits. Published on 2021-10-14 10:22:12 (Source: Journal of the Belgian Society of Radiology)

MRI of Wallerian Degeneration in the Brainstem: A Pictorial Essay
Wallerian degeneration of the cerebral peduncle is a common MRI finding after cerebral injury. The degree of peduncular atrophy reflects the extent of damage in the corticospinal tract. The acute phase of Wallerian degeneration is visible with Diffusion-Weighted-Imaging. New investigation with Diffusion-Tensor-Imaging quantifies Wallerian degeneration in the subacute ischemic phase and is a good predictor for later functional recovery after stroke.
