Weekday Surgery Associated With Short-Term Outcomes in Patients With Colorectal Cancers
The “weekday effect” on elective surgery remains controversial. We aimed to examine the association between the day of surgery and short-term outcomes after elective surgery for stage I-III colorectal cancer (CRC). (Source: Journal of Surgical Research)

Automatic Smoke Analysis in Minimally Invasive Surgery by Image-Based Machine Learning
Minimally Invasive Surgery uses electrosurgical tools that generate smoke. This smoke reduces the visibility of the surgical site and spreads harmful substances with potential hazards for the surgical staff. Automatic image analysis may provide assistance. However, the existing studies are restricted to simple clear versus smoky image classification. (Source: Journal of Surgical Research)

Database Integration Correlates Street Crossing Design Strategies With Pedestrian Injury
Transportation databases have limited data regarding injury severity of pedestrian versus automobile patients. To identify opportunities to reduce injury severity, transportation and trauma databases were integrated to examine the differences in pedestrian injury severity at street crossings that were signalized crossings (SCs) versus nonsignalized crossings (NSCs). It was hypothesized that trauma database integration would enhance safety analysis and pedestrians struck at NSC would have greater injury severity. (Source: Journal of Surgical Research)

Surfactant Therapy in Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia and Fetoscopic Endoluminal Tracheal Occlusion
Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is a complex pathology with severe pulmonary morbidity. Administration of surfactant in CDH is controversial, and the advent of fetoscopic endoluminal tracheal occlusion (FETO) has added further complexity. While FETO has been shown to improve survival outcomes, there are risks of prematurity and potential surfactant deficiency. We aim to evaluate the characteristics and outcomes of surfactant administration for CDH infants and elucidate potential benefits or risks in this unique population. Geriatric Motorcycle-Related Outcomes: A  Pennsylvania Multicenter Study
Geriatric patients (GeP) often experience increased morbidity and mortality following traumatic insult and as a result, require more specialized care due to lower physiologic reserve and underlying medical comorbidities. Motorcycle injuries (MCCI) occur across all age groups; however, no large-scale studies evaluating outcomes of GeP exist for this particular subset of patients. Data thus far are limited to elderly participation in recreational activities such as water and alpine skiing, snowboarding, equestrian, snowmobiles, bicycles, and all-terrain vehicles. Colorectal Cancer-Associated Myofibroblasts Exhibit Enhanced Angiogenin Expression and Signaling via the PLXNB2 Receptor
Dynamic cell-cell interactions shape the tumor microenvironment to regulate tumor growth and invasiveness. Myofibroblasts are gastrointestinal stromal cells that are upregulated in the setting of colorectal cancer (CRC) and may play an important role in tumor-stromal cell communication. Angiogenin is a 14-kDa ribonuclease that regulates myofibroblast function and has been implicated in myofibroblast-CRC cell communication in mouse models. However, its role in human patients has not been well established. (Source: Journal of Surgical Research)

Murine Traumatic Brain Injury Model Comparison: Closed Head Injury Versus Controlled Cortical Impact
Various murine models have been utilized to study TBI, including closed head injury (CHI) and controlled cortical impact (CCI), without direct comparison. The aim of our study was to evaluate these models to determine differences in neurological and behavioral outcomes postinjury. (Source: Journal of Surgical Research)

Access to Laparoscopic Pediatric Surgery: Do Ethnic and Racial Disparities Exist?
Disparate access to laparoscopic surgery may contribute to poorer health outcomes among racial and ethnic minorities, especially among children. We investigated whether racial and ethnic disparities in laparoscopic procedures existed among four common surgical operations in the pediatric population in the United States. Outcomes Associated With Aortic Balloon Occlusion Time in Patients With Zone 1 Resuscitative Endovascular Balloon Occlusion of the Aorta
Resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) has the potential to cause clinically relevant systemic ischemic burden with long durations of aortic occlusion (AO). We aimed to examine the association between balloon occlusion time and clinical complications and mortality outcomes in patients undergoing zone 1 REBOA. (Source: Journal of Surgical Research)

Letter Regarding: The Use of Inflammatory Markers for Treatment Response Monitoring in Acute Cholangitis: A Retrospective Cohort Study
We read the article by Belyaev et  al.1 entitled “The Use of Inflammatory Markers for Treatment Response Monitoring in Acute Cholangitis: A Retrospective Cohort Study” with great interest. In the paper, the authors investigated the discriminatory powers of traditional blood inflammatory markers and proposed new inflammatory mar kers with a better ability to distinguish between patients with and without biliary tract infection. They determined that the C-reactive protein (CRP)-to-lymphocyte ratio (CLR) and the CRP-to-(lymphocytes∗albumin) ratio (CLAR) have superior discriminatory powers than the traditional inflammat...
