Survey on the Perceptions of Pregnancy and Parenthood in Trainees: Advances, Obstacles, and Growth Opportunities
Despite national policy changes, perspective changes on pregnancy and parenting in training are often lacking. We evaluated current viewpoints regarding pregnancy, parenthood, leave needs, and perceptions of support across trainees at our institution. (Source: Journal of Surgical Research)

Increasing Adoption of Laparoscopy in Urgent and Emergent Colectomies for Pediatric Ulcerative Colitis
While minimally invasive surgery (MIS) approaches are commonly utilized in the elective surgical setting for pediatric ulcerative colitis (UC), their role in urgent and emergent disease is less clear. We aim to assess trends in the surgical approaches for pediatric UC patients requiring urgent and emergent colectomies and their associated outcomes. (Source: Journal of Surgical Research)

History of Psychoactive Medication a Risk Factor for Neurocognitive Decline After Cardiac Surgery
Neurocognitive decline (NCD) is a common complication after cardiac surgery with implications for outcomes and quality of life. Identifying risk factors can help surgeons implement preventative measures, optimize modifiable risk factors, and counsel patients about risk and prognosis. (Source: Journal of Surgical Research)

Early Abnormal Vital Signs Predict Poor Outcomes in Normotensive Patients Following Penetrating Trauma
Because trauma patients in class II shock (blood loss of 15%-30% of total blood volume) arrive normotensive, this makes the identification of shock and subsequent prognostication of outcomes challenging. Our aim was to identify early predictive factors associated with worse outcomes in normotensive patients following penetrating trauma. We hypothesize that abnormalities in initial vital signs portend worse outcomes in normotensive patients following penetrating trauma. (Source: Journal of Surgical Research)

Association of COVID-19 Visitor Limitations and Goals of Care Discussions in the Intensive Care Unit
The COVID-19 pandemic led to visitor restrictions in many hospitals. Since care in the surgical intensive care unit (SICU) often engages visitors as surrogate decision-makers, we investigated whether there was an association between COVID-19 –related visitor restrictions, goals of care discussions (GOCD), and patient outcomes in SICU patients. Comparing Outcomes in Patients Undergoing Colectomy at Veteran Affairs Hospitals and Non-Veteran Affairs Hospitals: A  Multiinstitutional Study
The Veteran Affairs Surgical Quality Improvement Program (VASQIP) and National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) are large databases designed to measure surgical outcomes for their respective populations. We sought to compare surgical outcomes in patients undergoing colectomies at Veterans Affairs (VA) hospitals versus non-VA hospitals. (Source: Journal of Surgical Research)

Variability in Surveillance Strategies Following Resection of Sacrococcygeal Teratoma
Surveillance following sacrococcygeal teratoma (SCT) resection varies. The purpose of this study was to describe the clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients undergoing SCT resection and examine current institutional practices to detect recurrence. (Source: Journal of Surgical Research)

Glutamine Alleviates I/R-Induced Intestinal Injury and Dysmotility Via the Downregulation of Xanthine Oxidase/Uric Acid Signaling and Lactate Generation in Wistar Rats
Disruption of intestinal histoarchitecture and intestinal dysmotility is critical to intestinal ischemia/reperfusion (IR) injury and xanthine oxidase (XO)/uric acid (UA) signaling and increased lactate generation have been reported to play a role. More so, glutamine treatment has been demonstrated to inhibit XO/UA signaling. However, the role of glutamine in intestinal IR injury –induced intestinal dysmotility and the associated mechanisms of action are unclear. Therefore, this study was to investigate the mechanisms underlying the role of glutamine in intestinal IR injury. (Source: Journal of Surgical Research)

Membranous Septum Length Predicts New Conduction Abnormalities in Surgical Aortic Valve Replacement: A Novel Predictor for Permanent Pacemaker Implantation After Surgical Aortic Valve Replacement
The membranous septum (MS) length measured by cardiac computed tomography (CT) is useful for the prediction of permanent pacemaker implantation (PPMI) and new left bundle branch block (LBBB) after transcatheter aortic valve replacement. However, its predictive value for patients undergoing surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) is unknown. (Source: Journal of Surgical Research)

A Narrative Review on Intraoperative Adverse Events: Risks, Prevention, and Mitigation
Adverse events from surgical interventions are common. They can occur at various stages of surgical care, and they carry a heavy burden on the different parties involved. While extensive research and efforts have been made to better understand the etiologies of postoperative complications, more research on intraoperative adverse events (iAEs) remains to be done. Primary Repair Versus Resection for AAST Grade I and II Colon Injuries: Does the Type of Repair Matter?
The management of traumatic colon injuries has evolved over the past two  decades. Recent evidence suggests that primary repair or resection over colostomy may decrease morbidity and mortality. Data comparing patients undergoing primary repair versus resection are lacking. We sought to compare the outcomes of patients undergoing primary repair versus resection for low-g rade colon injuries. Risk Factors for Chronic Atrial Fibrillation Following Lung Lobectomy
Postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) is a common complication following lung lobectomy and is associated with increased risk of stroke, mortality, and prolonged hospital length of stay. The purpose of this study was to define the risk factors for POAF after lobectomy, hypothesizing that operative approach would be associated with risk of chronic POAF. The Gender Gap in Surgical Literature: Are We Making Progress?
The percentage of women in surgical leadership roles is not commensurate with percent of women in field of surgery. Citation indexes are used as proxy for scholarly impact and may serve as an indicator of women's progress in academic surgery. We aimed to evaluate gender disparities in authorship of surgery manuscripts in high-impact journals. (Source: Journal of Surgical Research)
