Long-Term Survival Following Primary Graft Dysfunction Development in Lung Transplantation
Primary graft dysfunction (PGD) is a known risk factor for early mortality following lung transplant (LT). However, the outcomes of patients who achieve long-term survival following index hospitalization are unknown. We aimed to determine the long-term association of PGD grade 3 (PGD3) in patients without in-hospital mortality. (Source: Journal of Surgical Research)

Limited English Proficiency and Graves ’ Disease at an Urban Safety Net Hospital
Decision-making regarding definitive therapy for Graves ’ disease requires effective patient-provider communication. We investigated whether patients with limited English proficiency have differences in thyroidectomy outcomes or perioperative management when compared to English proficient (EP) patients at a safety net hospital with high-volume endocrin e surgery practice. Association of Racial and Economic Privilege on Postoperative Outcomes Among Medicare Beneficiaries
Social determinants of health can play an important role in patient health. Privilege is a right, benefit, advantage, or opportunity that can positively affect all social determinants of health. We sought to assess variations in the prevalence of privilege among patient populations and define the association of privilege on postoperative surgical outcomes. Temporal Trends of Neonatal Surgical Conditions in Texas and Accessibility to Pediatric Surgical Care
Texas consistently accounts for approximately 10% of annual national births, the second highest of all US states. This temporal study aimed to evaluate incidences of neonatal surgical conditions across Texas and to delineate regional pediatric surgeon accessibility. (Source: Journal of Surgical Research)

Pediatric Emergency Surgery Course in Uganda: Long-Term Follow-Up and Insights From Further Dissemination
Approximately 170 pediatric surgeons are needed for the 24 million children in Uganda. There are only seven. Consequently, general surgeons manage many pediatric surgical conditions. In response, stakeholders created the Pediatric Emergency Surgery Course (PESC) for rural providers, given three times in 2018-2019. We sought to understand the course ’s long-term impact, current pediatric surgery needs, and determine measures for improvement. (Source: Journal of Surgical Research)

Imaging Concordance With Vein Sampling for Primary Aldosteronism: A Cohort Study and Literature Review
Adrenal venous sampling (AVS) is used to distinguish unilateral from bilateral aldosterone hypersecretion as a cause of primary aldosteronism (PA). Unilateral disease is treated with adrenalectomy and bilateral hypersecretion managed medically. (Source: Journal of Surgical Research)

Locoregional Anesthesia's Association With Reduced Intensive Care Unit Stay After Elective Endovascular Aneurysm Repair: Impact of Temporal Changes in Practice Patterns
Elective endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) can be performed via local anesthetics and/or regional (epidural or spinal) anesthesia (locoregional [LR]), versus general anesthesia (GA), conferring reduced intensive care unit (ICU) and hospital stays. Current analyses fail to account for temporal changes in vascular practice. Therefore, this study aimed to confirm reductions in ICU and hospital stays among LR patients while accounting for changes in practice patterns. (Source: Journal of Surgical Research)
