Alterations of Prostanoid Expression and Intestinal Epithelial Barrier Functions in Ileus
Intestinal manipulation (IM) –induced inflammation could contribute to postoperative ileus (POI) pathophysiology via the modulation of prostanoid pathways. To identify the prostanoids involved, we aimed to characterize the profile of prostanoids and their synthesis enzyme expression in a murine model of POI and to determine w hether the altered prostanoids could contribute to POI. Cytokine Release by Microglia Exposed to Neurologic Injury Is Amplified by Lipopolysaccharide
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of death and morbidity in the trauma population. Microglia drive the secondary neuroinflammatory response after TBI. We sought to determine if the microglial response to neurologic injury was exacerbated by a second stimulus after exposure to neurologic injury. (Source: Journal of Surgical Research)

Young Age as a Predictor of Chemotherapy Recommendation and Treatment in Breast Cancer: A National Cancer Database Study
Breast cancer, although the second most common malignancy in women in the United States, is rare in patients under the age of 40  y. However, this young patient population has high recurrence and mortality rates, with chemotherapy frequently used as adjuvant treatment. We aimed to determine whether age is an independent predictor of chemotherapy recommendation and subsequent treatment and the relationship to Oncotype Dx (ODX ) recurrence score (RS). Short-Term Prognostic Effect of Comprehensive Complication Index in Patients With Gastric Cardia Adenocarcinoma
The Clavien-Dindo Classification (CDC) has been traditionally used for assessing postoperative complications. Recently, the Comprehensive Complication Index (CCI) has been introduced as a new tool. However, its prognostic significance in Gastric Cardia Adenocarcinoma (GCA) is yet to be determined. (Source: Journal of Surgical Research)

Association of Cholinesterase With Postoperative Pneumonia After Gastrectomy for Gastric Cancer
Cholinesterase is a classical marker that reflects nutritional and inflammatory status. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the association between serum cholinesterase levels and postoperative infectious complications in patients undergoing gastrectomy for gastric cancer. Evaluating Medical Students ’ Perceptions of Patient-Led Transplant Surgery Education 1-2 Years Later
Medical students value the opportunity to learn from patients as a supplement to traditional faculty-led education; however, long-term follow-up to understand the educational impact of these experiences is lacking. We surveyed medical students who conducted non-medical virtual encounters with transplant recipients or living donors to understand the impact on students ’ patient care approach after 1-2 y. Using the Social Vulnerability Index to Analyze Statewide Health Disparities in Cholecystectomy
Addressing the effects of social determinants of health in surgery has become a national priority. We evaluated the utility of the Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) in determining the likelihood of receiving cholecystectomy for cholecystitis in Texas. (Source: Journal of Surgical Research)

Time to Flip the Approach: Retroperitoneoscopic Adrenalectomy
Retroperitoneoscopic adrenalectomy (RPA) has gained increasing popularity with its excellent perioperative outcomes and direct surgical access compared to other adrenalectomy approaches. We review perioperative outcomes of RPA by a specialized endocrine surgeon before and after expert intensive trainings (EITs), and to that of other laparoscopic adrenalectomy approaches at our center over a 9-year period, aiming to ascertain if RPA is worth the steep learning curve. Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography/Computed Tomography Utilization for Extremity Melanomas at a High-Volume Center
Planar lymphoscintigraphy (PL) is commonly used in mapping before sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) for invasive cutaneous melanoma. Recently, single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT)/ computed tomography (CT) has been utilized, in addition to PL, for detailed anatomic information and detection of sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) outside of the primary nodal basin in truncal and head and neck melanoma. Following a protocol change due to COVID-19, our institution began routinely obtaining both PL and SPECT-CT imaging for all melanoma SLN mapping. (Source: Journal of Surgical Research)

Blunt Adrenal Injury is Not Associated With Worse Outcomes in Adult Trauma Patients
Blunt adrenal injury is rare. Given production of hormones including catecholamines, adrenal injury may lead to worse outcomes. However, there is a paucity of literature on this topic. As such, we compared blunt trauma patients (BTPs) with and without adrenal injuries, hypothesizing similar mortality and complications between cohorts. (Source: Journal of Surgical Research)

Rothia in Nonsmall Cell Lung Cancer is Associated With Worse Survival
The microbiome is known to play a significant role in cancer biology; however, few studies have elucidated its relationship with Nonsmall Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) patient outcomes. We hypothesized that there are specific microorganisms that are closely related with NSCLC patient survival. (Source: Journal of Surgical Research)

Preoperative Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte Ratio in Postmenopausal Breast Cancer Patients
Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) has been recognized as a marker of systemic inflammation with a prognostic impact in patients with various cancers, including breast cancer. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between the preoperative NLR and breast cancer prognosis in the patients before and after menopausal age, and its relationship with other prognostic factors.
