Timing and Location of Venous Thromboembolisms After Surgery for Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Patients with inflammatory bowel disease are reported to be at elevated risk for postoperative venous thromboembolism (VTE). The rate and location of these VTE complications is unclear. (Source: Journal of Surgical Research)

Hospital-Wide Adherence to Postsurgical Opioid Prescribing Guidelines: A Retrospective Cohort Study
Lowering opioid prescription doses and quantity decreases the risk of chronic opioid usage. A tool was inserted into the brief operative note for the surgeon to assess the severity of pain associated with the procedure. We studied surgeon adherence to current opioid-prescribing recommendations. (Source: Journal of Surgical Research)

Development of a Predictive Nomogram for Circumferential Resection Margin in Rectal Cancer Surgery
Circumferential resection margin (CRM) is a key quality metric and predictor of oncologic outcomes and overall survival following surgery for rectal cancer. We aimed to develop a nomogram to identify patients at risk for a positive CRM in the preoperative setting. (Source: Journal of Surgical Research)

Kidney Transplantation Anastomotic Time Is Jointly Associated With Resident and Attending Experience
Few studies evaluate the interplay of attending and resident learning curves in surgical education. Anastomotic time is known to be correlated with transplant outcomes in kidney transplantation. We aimed to evaluate the correlation between the combination of resident and attending experience and anastomotic time in kidney transplantation. (Source: Journal of Surgical Research)

Assessing Adequacy: A Meta-Analysis of Rapid Onsite Evaluation of Thyroid Nodules
Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) is the standard form of preoperative evaluation of thyroid nodule cytological status. A significant number FNAs are classified as inadequate for interpretation, requiring a repeat FNA which is potentially avoidable, costly, and delays treatment. To address these concerns and maximize first-time FNA adequacy, rapid onsite evaluation (ROSE) of FNA specimens was introduced. Our study aims to determine the impact of ROSE on FNA adequacy. Large-Diameter Fenestrated Endograft Repair of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms Is Not Associated With Medium-Term Outcomes
Recent data suggests that infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) endovascular repair (EVAR) with large diameter grafts (LGs) may have a higher risk of endoleak and reintervention. However, this has not been studied extensively for fenestrated endovascular aneurysm repair (fEVAR). We, therefore, sought to evaluate the outcomes of patients undergoing fEVAR with large-diameter endografts. (Source: Journal of Surgical Research)

Just Say NO: Inhaled Nitric Oxide Effect on Respiratory Parameters Following Traumatic Brain Injury in Humans and a Porcine Model
The mechanism of post-traumatic brain injury (TBI) hypoxemia involves ventilation/perfusion mismatch and loss of pulmonary hypoxic vasoconstriction. Inhaled nitric oxide (iNO) has been studied as an adjunct treatment to avoid the use of high positive end-expiratory pressure and inspired oxygen in treatment-refractory hypoxia. We hypothesized that iNO treatment following TBI would improve systemic and cerebral oxygenation via improved matching of pulmonary perfusion and ventilation. (Source: Journal of Surgical Research)

Characterization of Surgical Movements As a  Training Tool for Improving Efficiency
Surgical experience is often reflected by efficient, fluid, and well-calculated movements. For a new trainee, learning these characteristics is possible only by observation as there is no quantification system to define these factors. We analyzed surgeons ’ hand movements with different experience levels to characterize their movements according to experience. (Source: Journal of Surgical Research)

Modern Trends for Primary Hyperparathyroidism: Intervening on Less Biochemically Severe Disease
Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is defined by autonomous parathyroid hormone secretion, which has broad physiologic effects. Parathyroidectomy is the only cure and is recommended for patients demonstrating symptomatic disease and/or end organ damage. However, there may be a benefit to intervening before the development of complications. We sought to characterize institutional trends in the biochemical and symptomatic presentation of PHPT and the associated cure and complication rates. (Source: Journal of Surgical Research)

Identifying Age-Specific Risk Factors for Poor Outcomes After Trauma With Machine Learning
Risk stratification for poor outcomes is not currently age-specific. Risk stratification of older patients based on observational cohorts primarily composed of young patients may result in suboptimal clinical care and inaccurate quality benchmarking. We assessed two hypotheses. First, we hypothesized that risk factors for poor outcomes after trauma are age-dependent and, second, that the relative importance of various risk factors are also age-dependent.
