Associations between smoking and pain in early recovery in residential substance use treatment-seekers
A growing literature indicates bidirectional associations between pain and tobacco use. Cigarette smokers are at increased risk for chronic pain, and observational and experimental studies indicate that pain increases motivation to smoke. Tobacco use disorder frequently co-occurs with other substance use disorders, which are also associated with chronic pain vulnerability. Despite evidence that pain significantly predicts smoking and relapse, associations between smoking history/trajectory and changes in pain over the course of treatment have not been characterized. Buprenorphine induced opioid withdrawal syndrome relieved by adjunctive magnesium: A clinical trial
Precipitated opioid withdrawal syndrome (OWS) is a severe and intolerable situation that may occur by a pharmaceutical agent. Reactivation of inhibited N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor in person with prolonged opioid use can led to severe OWS. We conducted a double-blind, randomized clinical trial to assess the effect of magnesium sulfate (MGSO4) as an NMDA receptor antagonist on OWS. (Source: Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment)

Prevalence and associated risk factors of hepatitis C antibody and RNA among people who inject drugs in Puerto Rico
As a public health crisis, hepatitis C viral infection (HCV) is highly prevalent among people who inject drugs (PWID). We aimed to assess factors associated with HCV antibody (Ab) and HCV ribonucleic acid (RNA) positivity among PWID in Puerto Rico. (Source: Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment)

Dialing for doctors: Secret shopper study of Arizona methadone and buprenorphine providers, 2022
Methadone and buprenorphine are effective and safe treatments for opioid use disorder and also reduce overdose and all-cause mortality. Identifying and reaching providers of medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) has proven difficult for prospective patients and researchers. (Source: Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment)

Timing of treatment for opioid use disorder among birthing people
The number of pregnant women with opioid use disorder (OUD) has increased over time. Although effective treatment options exist, little is known about the extent to which women receive treatment during pregnancy and at what stage of pregnancy care is initiated. It takes a village: A pilot study of a group telehealth intervention for support persons affected by opioid use disorder
Opioid use disorder (OUD) has devastating effects on individuals, families, and communities. The Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) is a Support Person (SP)-focused intervention that aims to increase SPs' communication strategies, positive reinforcement/rewards, and social support. This pilot study, called eINSPIRE (INtegrating Support Persons Into REcovery), adapted CRAFT for delivery via group telehealth. The aims were to evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effectiveness of this intervention on patient buprenorphine retention and SP mental health. Disclosing Recovery: A pilot randomized controlled trial of a patient decision aid to improve disclosure processes for people in treatment for opioid use disorder
People engaged in treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD) report struggling with whether and how to disclose, or share information about their OUD history and/or treatment with others. Yet, disclosure can act as a gateway to re-establishing social connection and support during recovery. The current study describes a pilot randomized controlled trial of Disclosing Recovery: A Decision Aid and Toolkit, a patient decision aid designed to facilitate disclosure decisions and build disclosure skills. Sexual orientation-based microaggressions and cannabis use outcomes among sexual minority individuals: The impact of negative affect and coping-motivated cannabis use
Sexual minority individuals report significantly more cannabis use and problems than their heterosexual peers, possibly due to their frequent experiences with sexual orientation-based microaggressions. As a result, sexual minority individuals may turn to cannabis use to cope with the negative affect associated with these experiences. No known studies have tested this hypothesis; therefore, the current study tested if sexual orientation microaggressions are positively associated with negative affect (anxiety and depression), cannabis coping motives, and cannabis-related outcomes (frequency, problems); if coping motives are ...

Adaptation of a trauma-informed intervention to prevent opioid use among youth in the legal system
Youth in the legal system are at high risk for opioid and other substance use problems and exhibit high rates of trauma exposure. Trauma-focused therapeutic approaches to prevent substance use show promise, but few evidence-based interventions are designed with justice-involved youth in mind. Consequently, implementing trauma-informed, evidence-based interventions within juvenile justice systems is challenging. The current paper describes the systematic adaptation of Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) as a family-centered substance use prevention program for youth transitioning from secure residential facilities. Mental health treatment utilization among Gulf War era veterans with probable alcohol use disorder
Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is prevalent among veterans, and excessive alcohol use is associated with significant mental and physical health consequences. Currently, the largest cohort of veterans seeking services at the VA are those from the 1990s Gulf War Era. This cohort of veterans is unique due to the nature of their deployment resulting in a myriad of unexplained symptoms collectively known as “Gulf War Illness” and higher rates of mental health problems. The present study sought to examine the association between probable AUD and mental health treatment utilization in a sample of 1126 (882 male) Gulf War-era vete...

Medications for opioid use disorder associated with reduced readmissions for patients with severe injection-related infections: A matched cohort study
Hospitalizations due to severe injection-related infections (SIRIs) and patient-directed discharge (PDD) in people who inject drugs (PWID) are increasing, but research on readmission outcomes at PDD is limited. In this retrospective, matched cohort study we evaluated predictors of 30-day readmission by discharge status among PWID. (Source: Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment)
