Demographic differences in services utilization across in-person (2019), telehealth (2020), and hybrid (2021) outpatient substance use services in New York
Many outpatient substance use programs have experienced in-person, remote/telehealth, and hybrid models of care since the 2020 Covid-19 Pandemic. Changes in treatment models naturally affect service utilization and may affect treatment trajectories. Currently, limited research examines the implications of different health care models on service utilization and patient outcomes in substance use treatment. Here, we reflect on the implications of each model from a patient-centered care approach and review the implications on service utilization and outcomes. Women with substance use disorders are highly impacted by the overturning of Roe v. Wade: Advocacy steps are urgently needed
The Supreme Court's ruling to overturn the 1973 Roe v. Wade verdict represents a major setback for women's reproductive freedoms in the United States. This ruling revokes constitutional protection for abortion rights and returns the decision to the states. Since this ruling in June 2022, numerous states have adopted total or near total abortion bans, with many of these bans offering no exception for rape, incest, or nonfatal maternal health risks. Legal experts also warn that this ruling can open the door to restrict contraceptive rights previously protected under the same implied constitutional right to privacy as abortio...

Alcohol and other drug use: A qualitative exploration of staff and patient's experiences of language use as a means of stigma communication in hospital and primary care settings
The hospital and primary care settings present opportunities to interact, initiate conversations, and instigate referrals for patients experiencing harm from their alcohol and other drug use. Using a stigma communication model, our qualitative study explored whether stigma communication materialized in staff's language in the hospital and primary care settings, and if so, whether this had any impact on staff's and patients' experiences. Delay discounting and substance use treatment outcomes: A systematic review focused on treatment outcomes and discounting methodology
Delay discounting —the tendency to choose small, immediate rewards over larger, delayed rewards—is robustly associated with substance use. Delay discounting may present challenges in treatment for substance use disorders, as individuals with elevated discounting may struggle to wait for the long-term rewards that come from abstinence, which may yield poorer treatment outcomes. However, evidence on the role of discounting in treatment outcomes has been inconsistent. The study conducted a systematic review of the literature to characterize the prospective effects of delay discounting measured pre-treatment on substance u...

Expanding access to treatment for stimulant use disorder in a frontier state: A qualitative study of contingency management and TRUST program implementation in Montana
The client population eligible for treatment services supported by State Opioid Response (SOR) grant funding, administered by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), was expanded to include individuals with a stimulant use disorder (stimUD) in 2020. Due to a significant need to improve services for individuals with stimUD in Montana, the Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities Division (BHDD) of the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services used the grant opportunity to work with experts in the field of stimUD to pilot contingency management (CM) and the Treatment for I...

Malm ö Treatment Referral and Intervention Study (MATRIS)—36-month follow-up on retention and substance use among patients referred from needle exchange to opioid agonist treatment—The role of stimulant use at baseline
Opioid use disorder (OUD) is the leading cause of overdose morbidity and mortality globally. Retention in opioid agonist treatment (OAT) is crucial as it effectively reduces overdose mortality among individuals suffering from OUD. Previous research on treatment retention among heroin-dependent individuals referred from needle exchange programs (NEP) to OAT is scarce, and with predictors for retention in OAT being somewhat inconclusive, further investigations into this subject is of great interest. Collaborative care programs for pregnant and postpartum individuals with opioid use disorder: Organizational characteristics of sites participating in the NIDA CTN0080 MOMs study
Pregnant individuals with substance use disorders face complex issues that may serve as barriers to treatment entry and retention. Several professional organizations have established recommendations on comprehensive, collaborative approaches to treatment to meet the needs of this population, but information on real-world application is lacking. Sites participating in the NIDA CTN0080 “Medication treatment for Opioid use disorder in expectant Mothers (MOMs)”—a randomized clinical trial of extended release compared to sublingual buprenorphine among pregnant and postpartum individuals (PPI)—were selected, in part, bec...
