The current overdose crisis in the United States is often referred to as the “opioid” or “fentanyl crisis” (Incze et al., 2023). However, the overdose death rate associated with psychomotor stimulants, including cocaine and methamphetamine, has also dramatically increased in recent years (Hedegaard et al., 2021; Hoopsick& Andrew Yockey, 2023). This escalation of deaths associated with psychomotor stimulants (alone and in combination with fentanyl) is referred to as the “fourth wave” of the twenty-first-century drug overdose death crisis in the United States (Ciccarone, 2021; Jenkins, 2021). Longitudinal changes in co-involved drugs, comorbidities, and demographics of methamphetamine-related deaths in Los Angeles County
We conducted a population-based observational study of all medical examiner cases in Los Angeles County from January 2012 through June 2021 in which methamphetamine was listed as a cause of or contributing factor to death (n  = 6125). We aimed to characterize demographics, comorbidities, and co-involved substances in methamphetamine-related deaths longitudinally in Los Angeles County, California. Intervention for marijuana using, court-involved non-incarcerated youth
Justice-involved youth (JIY) are at elevated risk for substance use and for substance use –related harm compared to non-JIY. Marijuana use is of significant concern in this population, as it is tied to reoffending. Motivational enhancement therapy (MET) and electronic interventions show promise in reducing youth substance use; the degree to which these findings extend to JIY requires a dditional research attention. Thus, the purpose of this study was to test the preliminary feasibility and effectiveness of a combined brief electronic parenting intervention plus a brief MET-based electronic intervention for JIY adolescent...

The impact of the implementation of medication for opioid use disorder and COVID-19 in a statewide correctional system on treatment engagement, postrelease continuation of care, and overdose
People with opioid use disorder (OUD) are overrepresented in US correctional facilities and experience disproportionately high risk for overdose after release. Medications for OUD (MOUD) are highly efficacious but not available to most incarcerated individuals. In 2018, Vermont began providing MOUD for all incarcerated individuals with OUD statewide. In 2020, the COVID-19 state of emergency began. We assessed the impact of both events on MOUD utilization and treatment outcomes. (Source: Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment)

Economic benefits of substance use disorder treatment: A systematic literature review of economic evaluation studies from 2003 to 2021
This study assembles and synthesizes two decades of evidence describing the benefits of SUD treatment across five main outcome domains; 1) health care utilization; 2) self-reported criminal activity by offense type; 3) criminal justice involvement collected from administrative records or self-reported; 4) productivity assessed through working hours or wages earned; and 5) social services (e.g., a day spent in transitional housing). Individualizing methadone treatment with split dosing: An underutilized tool
Methadone's long half-life typically allows for once daily dosing. However, a growing body of evidence and clinical experience shows that some patients may benefit from twice-daily ( “split”) dosing to produce more stable symptoms and minimize side effects, independent of serum peak-to-trough levels. Concerns regarding split dosing typically center on diversion and poor adherence and must be taken seriously. However, policy changes during COVID-19 demonstrate that the rigidi ty historically applied to methadone may be unnecessarily stringent. (Source: Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment)

Telephone monitoring and 15-month outcomes for patients with co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders: Moderating effects of high-risk patient characteristics
Telephone monitoring interventions for substance use disorders are an important component of continuing care to reduce relapse and connect patients to services. However, a knowledge gap still exists as to which patient groups benefit most from them. This secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial examined moderators of associations between telephone monitoring and 15-month substance use outcomes among patients with co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders. High-risk patient characteristics at baseline were examined as potential moderators of the effectivness of telephone monitoring, including history...

American Indian and Alaska Native substance use treatment: Barriers and facilitators according to an implementation framework
Substance use disorder (SUD) and overdose deaths are higher in the American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) population than in other racial/ethnic groups. Multi-level gaps hinder SUD treatment for AIAN patients. Few studies have engaged front-line clinicians and administrators of SUD treatment programs serving AIAN patients to identify barriers and facilitators to improve the implementation of effective treatment. Inequities in the treatment of opioid use disorder: A scoping review
Given the lack of access to evidenced-based OUD treatment and the corresponding overdose crisis, researchers must evaluate and report health care inequities involving the treatment of OUD. Additionally, clinicians should be aware of these inequities in the treatment of patients. (Source: Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment)
