Investigating the associations of acute psychedelic experiences and changes in racial trauma symptoms, psychological flexibility, and substance use among People of Color in the United States and Canada
Evidence suggests that psychedelics may serve as a therapeutic approach to reduce substance use; however, People of Color (POC) are often excluded from this research. We investigated whether psychedelic use affects other substance use among POC and whether perceived changes in psychological flexibility and racial trauma mediates this association. Psychosis among individuals with methamphetamine use disorder is associated with elevated rates of hospitalizations and emergency department visits across an academic health care system
Methamphetamine (MA) is increasingly available in the United States and manufactured with increasing potency. Although psychosis is a known harm related to MA use, we know little about the clinical outcomes and prognosis of individuals who use MA and experience psychosis. Some evidence exists that psychosis among people who use methamphetamine leads to a high utilization of emergency and acute inpatient services, but the extent of this use is unclear. Predictors of opioid overdose during the COVID-19 pandemic: The role of relapse, treatment access and nonprescribed buprenorphine/naloxone
Emerging data indicate a disproportionate increase in overdose deaths since the onset of COVID-19. Speculation about causes for the increase center on rising drug use, illicit drug supply changes, and reduced treatment access. Possible overdose mitigation factors include reduced federal MOUD prescribing restrictions, naloxone distribution programs, and increased use of telehealth. Similarly, nonprescribed buprenorphine (NPB) use, increasingly described as a harm reduction strategy in the absence of treatment, may have moderated overdose risk. Differential effect of cannabis use on opioid agonist treatment outcomes: Exploratory analyses from the OPTIMA study
Conflictual evidence exists regarding the effects of cannabis use on the outcomes of opioid agonist therapy (OAT). In this exploratory analysis, we examined the effect of recent cannabis use on opioid use, craving, and withdrawal symptoms, in individuals participating in a trial comparing flexible buprenorphine/naloxone (BUP/NX) take-home dosing model to witnessed ingestion of methadone. Helping families heal in substance use treatment: A qualitative study about the role of peer support specialists with client families
Peer support specialists (PSS) are people with previous psychiatric illness or substance use disorders who use their experience to support those facing similar hardships. PSS offer a range of beneficial outcomes to both the PSS and clients. The most immediate social connections to those seeking treatment are often their families, yet no PSS studies are inclusive of family involvement. Strong theoretical and empirical support exists for family involvement in addiction treatment, but no studies to date on families in substance use treatment include PSS. Examining neurobehavioral differences that support success in recovery from alcohol and other substance use disorders
Substance use disorders (SUDs) are brain disorders associated with impairments resulting from the recurrent use of alcohol, drugs, or both. Though recovery is possible, SUDs are chronic, relapsing-remitting disorders, with estimates of SUD relapse at 40 –60 %. Currently, we know little about the mechanisms underlying successful recovery processes and whether substance-specific mechanisms exist. The current study sought to examine delay discounting (a measure of future valuation), executive skills, abstinence duration, and health behaviors in a population of individuals in recovery from alcohol, stimulants, opioids, and...

The role of health plans in addressing the opioid crisis: A qualitative study
This article is part of the HEALing Communities Study (HCS) funded by NIH, which seeks to facilitate communities' adoption of activities that might reduce overdose deaths, including overdose prevention education and naloxone distribution, medication for opioid use disorder, and safer opioid prescribing. We examine how health plans in one state (Massachusetts) are adapting to encourage and sustain activities that help communities to address opioid use disorder (OUD). Cultural and Psychosocial Correlates of co-use among Black-White Biracial Adults
Biracial individuals, a subset of the fastest growing population segment in the United States, frequently experience conflict with ethnic identity, according to marginality theory. Ethnic identity is associated with perceived discrimination and self-esteem, and each of these factors is associated with alcohol and marijuana use. Some research suggests that Black-White biracial individuals have specific challenges with ethnic identity, discrimination, and self-esteem, as well as have disproportionate rates of alcohol and marijuana use separately.
