17 The national hospital for neurology and neurosurgeryand functional seizures: a historical perspective using a collective case analysis of archived records from 1863 to 1945
Conclusion
Analyses of the previously unseen individual case records in the Queen Square archives provide a deeper and more holistic understanding of the historical approach to patients with functional seizures. (Source: Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry)

16 Comparing communication in face-to-face and telephone epilepsy consultations
Conclusions
From a broad perspective, face-to-face and teleconsultations in the seizure clinic are similar, lasting for roughly the same amount of time with a similar distribution of talk between parties. However, more detailed analysis reveals potentially consequential differences, suggesting that patients may find it more difficult to ask questions in telephone encounters. Future research should explore other such differences. (Source: Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry)

15 The clinical relevance of serum versus CSF NMDAR autoantibodies associated exclusively with psychiatric features: a systematic review and meta-analysis of individual patient data
Conclusions
Patients with an isolated psychiatric syndrome with CSF NMDAR autoantibodies can potentially be distinguished from those with serum-only NMDAR autoantibodies based on clinicodemographic and investigation findings. (Source: Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry)

1 Can we prevent dementia?
Dr Mukadam completed her Medical Sciences undergraduate degree at Cambridge University with an intercalated BA in Experimental Psychology. She then studied Clinical Medicine at the University of Oxford and trained in general medicine and surgery at Oxford and Newcastle.
She completed her psychiatric training on the Royal Free Psychiatric Training rotation and obtained her CCT in Old Age Psychiatry in 2013. Dr Mukadam obtained a doctoral research training fellowship from the NIHR to design and test an intervention to encourage South Asian people to seek help earlier for dementia.
During her PhD, Dr Mukadam has collaborated ...

14 Neural circuit mapping of waiting impulsivity and proactive inhibition with convergent evidence from fMRI and TMS
Conclusions
Our findings highlight the relevance of task design in assessing waiting impulsivity with CSRT tasks and highlight the role of LIFG integrity and related neural circuitry in waiting impulsivity. (Source: Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry)

13 Predisposing, precipitating and perpetuating factors in functional neurological disorder: a pilot study
Conclusions
Individuals with FND report diverse aetiological factors, including psychosocial, physical and environmental stressors. Alexithymia, dissociative tendencies, emotional distress, and physical symptom burden are also possible predisposing and/or perpetuating factors. Somatoform dissociation, anxiety and adverse experiences may be related to HRQoL in FND. (Source: Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry)

12 A pilot investigation of interoceptive accuracy, awareness, and sensibility in functional neurological disorder
Conclusions
Individuals with FND did not differ from HCs on interoceptive accuracy or awareness, measured at rest. The lower levels of ‘Not-Distracting’ and ‘Trusting’ seen in this FND sample replicated our previous study, suggesting that there may be a separation between trait and state interoceptive awareness in FND, reinforcing the need for interoception to be considered within a multidimensional framework. The lack of relationship between interoceptive accuracy and awareness in the FND group also implies that there may be a disconnect between actual performance and subjective confidence. Our fut...

11 The experience of hearing life altering medical news? Perspectives from health professionals
Conclusion
This acknowledges the significance of learning from those who have lived experiences of life-altering diagnoses. This knowledge will be invaluable in supporting both the HCP in giving news and the individual receiving the news, and can help with the creation of simple guidance when having to impart life-altering medical news such as:
Establish an appropriate setting
Check the patient’s perception of the situation prompting the news regarding the illness or test results
Determine the amount of information known or how much information is desired
Know the medical facts and their implication, before initia...

10 Distressing dreams, cognitive decline, and risk of dementia: a prospective study of three population-based cohorts
Conclusions
Distressing dreams predict cognitive decline and all-cause dementia in middle-aged and older adults without cognitive impairment or PD - especially amongst men. These findings may help to identify individuals at risk of dementia and could facilitate early prevention strategies. (Source: Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry)

09 Religiosity and risk of Parkinsons disease in England and the USA
Conclusions
This longitudinal study provides evidence for the first time that low religiosity in adulthood may be a strong risk factor for developing PD. (Source: Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry)

08 The economic cost of functional neurological disorders: a systematic review introduction
Conclusion
FND is associated with significant use of healthcare resources, resulting in economic costs to both the patient and the tax-payer, as well as intangible losses. Interventions, including accurate diagnosis, appear to offer an avenue towards reducing these costs. (Source: Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry)

07 Identifying ADHD in adult patients with dissociative seizures using the ASRS v1.1 questionnaire
Conclusions
It was possible to apply the ASRS v1.1 to almost everyone in this cohort, a few face to face or over the telephone in clinic, but most self-completed in their own time and returned by post or email. The vast majority who completed the ASRS scored well within the adult ADHD range. For those who did go on to have a formal assessment, almost all ended up with a confirmed diagnosis of ADHD. This service evaluation therefore also suggests that the prevalence of ADHD in adult patients with dissociative seizures is worthy of formal study, and there are theoretical and anecdotal reasons to believe this could benefit co...

06 Did Julius Caesar have a brain disorder that impaired his judgment?
Conclusions
We will never be certain what caused Julius Caesar’s falling sickness, but there is a strong case for him having epilepsy – either familial or secondary to another brain disorder. What is even less certain, however, is why he ignored concerns for his safety and walked out to his death on the Ides of March 45BCE. (Source: Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry)

05 Medical hypothesis: the pathophysiology of psychogenic polydipsia
Conclusions
The literature suggests that gut microbiota, tryptophan and its metabolites play an important role in gut-brain communication and it could be involved in the pathophysiology of psychogenic polydipsia. Changing the gut microbial composition could modulate/regulate tryptophan metabolites and alter behaviour. (Source: Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry)

Should we be preparing to give new dementia treatments to our patients?
Professor Robert Howard. I spend half my week working with older people with mental health disorders and dementia and my research aims to develop and evaluate better treatments for my patients. Through the conduct of independent clinical trials - from earliest proof of efficacy concept through to phase III - we can provide powerful evidence of what works and what doesn’t. Within the Department we have potential PhD supervisors with interests in dementia, depression, psychosis and anxiety disorders in older people. We’ve experts in epidemiology, PET and MR imaging, wet lab science and old fashioned clinical stud...
