Localized Provoked Vulvodynia: Association With Nerve Growth Factor and Transient Receptor Potential Vanilloid Type 1 Genes Polymorphisms
Conclusions Our results suggest novel genetic susceptibility to primary LPV associated with specific alleles in genes TRPV1 and NGF and propose the rs222747 “C” allele of TRPV1 as a common genetic predisposition for other pain syndromes. (Source: Journal of Lower Genital Tract Disease)

Improved anal Cytology Sampling: Tush Brush Compared With Dacron Swab
Conclusions Anal cytology AUCROC, sensitivity, and specificity in detecting anal neoplasia were greater using the TB when compared with the DS. A novel anal cytology sampling device designed specifically to increase the detection of anal neoplasia would be clinically beneficial. (Source: Journal of Lower Genital Tract Disease)

Comparison of Electrosurgical Devices for Cervical Conization: Novel Monopolar Scalpel (VIO) Versus Ultrasonic Scalpel
Conclusions Considering short operating time and less postoperative bleeding, VIO was preferred to HS. However, the excessive coagulation in VIO is considered to lead to cervical stenosis. (Source: Journal of Lower Genital Tract Disease)

Onclarity Human Papillomavirus Extended Genotyping in the Management of Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia 2+ Lesions
Conclusions This study showed that the evaluation of the HPV genotype persistence may represent a valid option to monitor patients treated for CIN 2+ lesions, because relapses were detected only in patients with persistence of the same genotype detected at baseline. Expression of Psoriasin in Human Papillomavirus–Induced Cervical High-Grade Squamous Intraepithelial Lesions
Conclusions In this study of AMP expression in human papillomavirus–induced HSIL, we observed lower psoriasin levels before surgery compared with after treatment, when both mRNA and protein levels were similar to healthy controls. Interleukin 8, on the other hand, was increased before treatment, indicating an inflammatory response. (Source: Journal of Lower Genital Tract Disease)

Trainee Performance in Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP) After Simulation Training
Objective The aim of the study was to review the performance of trainees in loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) procedures after the introduction of a simulation training program. Materials and Method A simulation training program was introduced in September 2016 for gynecology trainees at the study institution. Trainees were encouraged to perform at least 3 simulated LEEP procedures before operating. For a 12-month period after the introduction of training, data on operating time and specimen quality measures of clear margin status, adequate depth, and absence of fragmentation were reviewed. This was compa...

Risk Factor Analysis of Persistent High-Grade Squamous Intraepithelial Lesion After Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure Conization
Conclusions Being 50 years or older, positive margins, particularly endocervical margins, and having abnormal cytology and positive hrHPV testing during follow-up were risk factors for persistent HSIL lesions after LEEP conization. Colposcopy plays an indispensable role in the diagnosis of persistent HSIL and progression. (Source: Journal of Lower Genital Tract Disease)

Risk Factors of Post-Large Loop Excision of the Transformation Zone Recurrent High-Grade Cervical Intraepithelial Lesion: A Prospective Cohort Study
Conclusions Risk factors of post-LLETZ recurrent disease are older than 38 years, history of excisional therapy, positive endocervical margins, and lack of colposcopic guidance at the time of LLETZ. (Source: Journal of Lower Genital Tract Disease)

Importance of Colposcopy Impression in the Early Diagnosis of Posthysterectomy Vaginal Cancer
Conclusions Colposcopy is pivotal in the evaluation of abnormal cytology/hrHPV tests in follow-up of cervical cancer patients after hysterectomy and decision-making for vaginectomy in detecting early cancer. (Source: Journal of Lower Genital Tract Disease)

Vaginal Intraepithelial Neoplasia: Clinical Presentation, Management, and Outcomes in Relation to HIV Infection Status
Objectives The data available on vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia (VAIN) and infection by HIV are scarce. We therefore aimed to review the clinical presentation, management, and survival outcomes of VAIN in this group of women. Materials and Methods This is an observational cohort study of women diagnosed with VAIN for a 23-year period. Clinical characteristics and outcomes were analyzed according to women's HIV infection status. Disease-free and progression-free survival were compared between groups. Results Twenty-two of 87 women were HIV positive (25.3%) compared with the HIV-negative group, HIV-positive women ...

Why Do Women Get Cervical Cancer in an Organized Screening Program in Canada?
Conclusions Although nonparticipation in screening is the greatest factor associated with cervical cancer diagnosis, failure of cervical cytology to detect cytologic abnormalities in women 2 to 3 and 3 to 5 years before diagnosis is of concern. Efforts must be directed to recruitment of women for screening as well as improving the sensitivity of screening tests to detect existing abnormalities. International Society for the Study of Vulvovaginal Disease Recommendations Regarding Female Cosmetic Genital Surgery
Female genital cosmetic surgeries (FGCSs) and procedures are increasingly being advertised as common, simple, and complication-free, capable of not only improving aesthetic appearance but also increasing self-esteem and sexual pleasure. Guidelines for physicians and clear, scientifically correct information for patients must be made available, to minimize the number of ineffective or deleterious procedures. The International Society for the Study of Vulvovaginal Disease positions/recommendations regarding FGCS are as follows: 1. There is a wide variation regarding genital normalcy; providers must be able to explain this...

To Shave or Not to Shave? A Series of Periclitoral Masses Associated With Depilatory Techniques and a Review of the Literature
Periclitoral masses are uncommon disorders in gynecology often leading to pain and distress. With the popularity of female genital hair grooming and depilation, the vulva has been exposed to new insults including contact dermatitis and folliculitis. The unique anatomy of the protective covering of the clitoral hood may subject hair fragments to trapping, inflammation, irritation, and in some cases abscess formation.
