Bilateral Mandibular Pseudoarthrosis: A Rare Complication after Orthognathic Surgery
Abstract: Orthognathic surgery to treat dentofacial discrepancies has become an increasingly common elective procedure in sur-gical practices. Despite its numerous advantages such as improved aesthetics and masticatory and respiratory function, some complications and unfavorable results can be observed. Pseudoarthrosis after orthognathic surgery is a rare complication and is little reported in the literature. Pseudoarthrosis is characterized by an increasing occlusal worsening associated with bone mobility and pain. Due to the low incidence of pseudoarthrosis, it is necessary to study its involvement to elucidate its e...

Pediatric Cases of Recurrent Skull Giant Osteoma Misdiagnosed as Fibrous Dysplasia
Abstract: Osteomas are benign mature bone tumors that typically arise in the skull. Osteomas larger than 3 cm in diameter are considered giant osteomas. Giant osteomas of the skull vault are very rare, especially in children; therefore, only a few cases have been reported in the literature. Although osteomas are usually asymptomatic, a large skull mass can cause headache, as well as esthetic disfigurement of the forehead. it can be misdiagnosed as other conditions, such as fibrous dysplasia, ossifying cephalhematoma, or other malignant bone tumors. Herein, the authors report 2 rare pediatric cases of giant osteomas mim...

Application of the Buccal Fat Pad in Oral Reconstruction: Covered With Collagen Membrane or Not?
Conclusions: Combined application of collagen membrane protects the covered BFP from masticatory physical damage and food lodgment, which reduces infection and graft loss. It is worthy of consideration as an effective method for the reconstruction of selected moderate-sized oral defects, especially in larger size or at distant location. The Effect of Bone Density Measured by Cone Beam Computed Tomography and Implant Dimensions on the Stability of Dental Implants
Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of bone density value in Hounsfield unit derived from cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), and implant dimensions in relation to implant stability parameters namely the resonance frequency analysis and the insertion torque (IT) value. It included 24 patients who received 42 dental implants (DI). The bone density of the planned implant site was preoperatively measured using cone beam computed tomography. The implant stability was measured using Osstell implant stability quotient (ISQ). The ISQ values were recorded immediately postoperatively and after 16 weeks....

Unrecognized Fracture of a Silicone Implant During Closed Rhinoplasty
Abstract: Rhinoplasty via a closed approach is rarely performed due to provide limited exposure and inadequate operative field. Nevertheless, there are some cases in which closed approach is performed using L-shaped silicone implants. The authors recently encountered an interesting complication in a 33-year-old woman who had previously undergone rhinoplasty via a closed approach and who sought revision rhinoplasty at our institution. The authors accidently found a fractured silicone implant on lateral nasal x-ray. She had no nasal trauma history since previous rhinoplasty. The authors assumed that the silicone implant ...

Reconstruction of Complete Bilateral Maxillary Defects With Free Flaps
Abstract: Reconstruction of complete bilateral maxillary defects (CBMDs) can be challenging due to the extensive loss of bone and soft tissues. This is a retrospective case series of 46 consecutive patients with CBMDs that were reconstructed with different micro-vascular free flaps. The authors aimed to evaluate the surgical outcomes and discuss the different reconstruction options in this case series. Thirty-six patients underwent reconstruction following ablation surgery for malignant tumors, 6 for benign tumors, 3 patients were treated for osteomyelitis, and 1 patient underwent free flap reconstruction for posttraum...

Management of Mandibular Subcondylar Fracture Through an Intraoral Approach Using a Trans-Buccal Trocar With Ramus Buccal Decortication
Conclusions: Favorable results can be obtained by mandibular condylar fracture surgery through an intraoral approach using a trans-buccal trocar with ramus buccal decortication. This technique minimizes scarring, secures accessibility using a trocar, and sufficiently secures the field of view through buccal cortical bone reduction. (Source: Journal of Craniofacial Surgery)

Haemophilus Influenzae-Induced Corneal Ulcer and Endophthalmitis Triggered by Hair Dye
Abstract: The present report describes a 79-year-old woman developed eye pain in her right eye after accidental exposure to the hair dye when she dyed her hair. Her visual acuity was no light perception and intraocular ocular pressure was 10 mmHg in her right eye. Slit-lamp biomicroscopy revealed a huge corneal ulcer with the central cornea almost perforated and severe hypopyon in anterior chamber and moderate opacity in vitreous. Time-of-flight mass-spectrum of cornea scraping confirmed that the pathogen was haemophilus influenzae. Right-eye enucleation was performed. Topical chloramphenicol eye drops (0.25%) and cipr...

Bmp5 Mutation Alters circRNA Expression During Embryonic External Ear Development
Abstract: Bmp5 mutation can lead to microtia in mice models; however, its underlying mechanism is unclear. We analyzed circular RNA (circRNA) expression changes and associated gene regulation during embryonic development of the mouse’s external ear after a point mutation occurred naturally in the BMP5 gene. The outer ear tissues of BMP5 short-eared mouse model embryos at embryonic day (E) 15.5 and E17.5 were subjected to RNA sequencing. Changes in the circRNA expression profile were detected using find_circ and the CiRi2 software. Differentially expressed circRNAs were annotated by Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedi...

Evaluation of the Effects of Topical Application of Chlorhexidine, Ozone, and Metronidazole on Palatal Wound Healing: A Histopathological Study
This study aimed to evaluate the effects of chlorhexidine, metronidazole, and ozone application on the healing of palatal wounds in diabetic rats. A defect in the form of a 4 mm-diameter wound was created on the palatal mucosa of 84 adult female Wistar albino rats, which were randomly divided into 4 groups: control, chlorhexidine, metronidazole, and ozone groups. The animals were euthanized after 3, 6, and 10 days, and wound closure was histologically assessed. On day 3, polymorphonuclear leukocytes were significantly higher in the control group than in the chlorhexidine and ozone groups (P (Source: Journal of Craniofacial Surgery)

Crouzon Syndrome Anatomy, Usefulness of Vestibular Orientation
Abstract: Spatial resolution of computerized tomographic scanner has reached a level to which accurate anatomic measurements could be done in. Three-dimensional accurate measurements require a reliable referential system. In craniology landmarks are usually selected in the skull base. For craniofacial malformation the classical landmarks are of no help so the authors have used the vestibular orientation to study a series of 50 Crouzon syndrome computerized tomographic scan and compare the results (shape, position, linear mensuration, volumes…) with 122 controls in unaffected patients. The authors have confirmed Crouz...
