Use of Retroauricular Flaps to Reconstruct Defects of the Helical Rim and Adjuvant Intralesional Corticosteroids after Resection of Large Keloids
Conclusions: A retro auricular flap is safe and effective for reconstructing helical rim defects; adjuvant intralesional corticosteroids prevent scarring of the flap wound base after resection of large keloids. (Source: Journal of Craniofacial Surgery)

Giant Skull Tumor: A Benign Meningioma
Abstract: A 37-year-old male patient was complaining from painless forehead swelling, which started 5 years ago. Brain computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging showed a large extradural mass compressing the both frontal lobes with skull bone infiltration, hyperostosis and enlargement. The patient was operated in 2 stages. In the first stage, the authors achieved separation for the tumor from the scalp and skull. In the second stage after 1 week, the authors continued with circumferential dural opening around the tumor and separation of the tumor from brain tissue. Duroplasty was performed by autologous f...

Facial Reanimation Using Free Functional Muscle Transfer: Lessons Learnt From a Long Term Experience Comparing Innervation With Cross Facial Nerve Graft and Masseter Nerve
Conclusions: The cross facial nerve graft-gracilis FFMT can achieve natural and spontaneous smile and remains our first choice for facial reanimation. Masseter nerve-gracilis can be used if cross facial nerve graft-gracilis fails, patient desires a single stage surgery and in some specific conditions, such as bilateral mobius syndrome. Patient Discomfort After Rhinoplasty With and Without Osteotomy Under Conscious Sedation
Conclusion: Patients’ ratings of pain and satisfaction, and a lack of significant adverse effects, indicated that rhinoplasty can be performed under conscious sedation, even with osteotomy. (Source: Journal of Craniofacial Surgery)

Clinical Features and Outcomes of Patients with Orbital Schwannoma
Conclusions: Orbital schwannoma is a rare disease and it is difficult to distinguish it from other orbital tumors because the initial symptoms are nonspecific. Differential diagnosis by combining the shape, location, and contrast enhancement findings seen on computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging can be helpful in surgical treatment. Complete excision gives the best results without recurrence, but if the patient is in an inaccessible location, only surgery to reduce the volume can satisfy the patient without recurrence. Huge Submandibular Gland Mucocele With Diagnostic Difficulties
Abstract: Submandibular gland mucoceles, which are very rare cystic lesions, make differentiation from other cystic neck masses such as plunging ranula and cystic lymphatic malformation difficult. The authors report a rare huge submandibular gland mucocele with diagnostic difficulties. A 39-year-old woman with painless swelling in the left submandibular region underwent OK-432 injection therapy with a diagnosis of plunging ranula at another hospital. However, she was referred to our department for recurrent swelling. Computed tomography showed a well-circumscribed, multilocular, low-density lesion in the left submandib...

Solitary Neurofibroma of the Zygoma: Three-Dimensional Virtual Resection and Patient-Specific Polyetheretherketone Implant Reconstruction
Abstract: Intraosseous benign lesions rarely involve the zygoma, and intraosseous venous malformation is most commonly reported condition in the previous literature. A neurofibroma (NF) arising from the zygoma has not been reported before. Here, the authors present a 37-year-old female who developed solitary NF of the right zygoma. Surgical intervention is usually required for the treatment of a solitary NF. However, the complex three-dimensional (3D) anatomy of the zygoma increases the difficulty of the reconstruction for the operating surgeon. In this case, a preoperative digital surgical design was used to promote t...

Epidermoid Cyst of the Floor of the Mouth
Abstract: Epidermoid cysts are rare, slow-growing, benign, developmental cysts that are derived from abnormally situated ectodermal tissue. Epidermoid cysts may grow anywhere on the body and about 7% of them are located in the head and neck region. They are usually asymptomatic over years but can be symptomatic due to secondary changes or the growing size. Clinically, the lesion presents as a slow-growing asymptomatic mass, usually located in the midline, above or below the mylohyoid muscle. Surgical excision from the floor of the mouth is indicated to relieve symptoms and prevent possible infection. This swelling on t...

Continuous Interstitial Glucose Measurement for Flap Venous Occlusion Monitoring in a Diabetic Model
Abstract: Glucose has been used in the monitoring of transplanted flaps. However, few studies have focused on the effect of diabetes on the decrease in flap glucose levels. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the application of continuous interstitial glucose monitoring to detect flap venous occlusion in a diabetic rat model. The flap interstitial glucose level was measured by transcutaneous sensors in the bilateral vertical rectus abdominis myocutaneous flaps of each rat. interstitial glucose values in the bilateral flaps were recorded every 5 minutes after the venous occlusion of 1 flap. Forty-one rats were div...

Bmp5 Mutation Alters miRNA Expression During Embryonic External Ear Development
This study provides new insights into the mechanism by which miRNAs regulate the development of the external mouse ear. Changes in miRNA expression profiles can also provide clues for studying the biological regulatory mechanism of external ear embryonic development. (Source: Journal of Craniofacial Surgery)

Intramuscular Fat Graft Results in Lower Retention but Similar Quality Compared with Subcutaneous Counterpart
Abstract: The adipose tissue has been injected into both subcutaneous and intramuscular planes for volume augmentation. However, the differences in their outcomes have yet to be fully elucidated. To investigate the differences of intramuscular and subcutaneous graft outcome, adipose tissue was harvested from the inguinal fat pad of mice and then placed into the quadriceps femoris or the subcutaneous plane, respectively. At 8 weeks, the graft outcome was evaluated by gross weight assessment, hema-toxylin and eosin staining, and CD31 staining. The authors found out that though the intramuscular graft had lower weight ret...

Analysis of Inferior Nasal Morphology and Nostrils following Le Fort I Osteotomy
This study aimed to investigate the soft tissue parameters related to inferior nasal morphology and nostril shape and investigate the change at nostril types according to the Modified Topinard System following maxillary surgery. Materials and Methods: Thirty-five patients who underwent Le Fort I osteotomy with or without mandibular osteotomy were included in this retrospective study. Presurgery (T1) and postsurgery (T2) measurements which were the angle between the longitudinal axis of left and right nostril, nostril length, nostril width, alar width, alar base width, columella length, and columella width, were meas...
