Tapered, Sand-Blasted, Large-Grit, and Acid-Etched Surfaced Internal Dental Implant in the Diverse Pathologic Jaw
Conclusions:
The results of this study suggest that conservative surgical management for pathologic lesions based on the understanding of the pathologies can be helpful for successful oral rehabilitation. In bone grafting, it is necessary to determine an appropriate timing and method considering the risk of recurrence and the vascularity of the recipient site. For subsequent implant placement, selecting an implant system suitable for the site of placement and placing it within 3 to 6 months after bone grafting can help the long-term maintenance of the grafted bone and dental implant. The Anterolateral Thigh Perforator Flap for Mandibular Reconstruction: A Volumetric and Patient Satisfaction Analysis
Conclusions:
Patients with advanced oral cancers have a higher risk of recurrence that mandates closer radiographic surveillance. This may be impaired by artifacts from metallic implants required in free fibula flap reconstructions. Anterolateral thigh perforator flap may be a viable alternative because it is easier for secondary resection, amenable for direct repairs, has volumetric stability, has a lower cost and results in a comparable QoL outcome. Extended Maxillary Osteotomy Guide: A Design That Allows Manipulation of the Osteotomy Direction on the Posterior and Inner Walls of the Maxilla
Purpose:
Design an extended osteotomy guide (EOG) for Le Fort I osteotomy to improve the safety of surgery.
Materials and Methods:
The digital Le Fort I osteotomy guide was designed in MIMICS 23.0. Twenty-eight patients were randomized into 2 groups. Patients in the experimental group used EOG, and patients in the control group used a traditional osteotomy guide (TOG). Virtual designs and actual postoperative outcomes were compared by cone-beam computed tomography. The safety of the operation was confirmed by the accuracy of the osteotomy direction and depth on the inner and posterior walls of the maxilla.

A Brief Clinical Study: The Use of a Custom Guide for Scapula Free Flap Harvest and Mandibular Reconstruction
This article examines the novel use of a custom guide for a scapula free flap in mandibular reconstruction following resection. A case file was created involving a consultant surgeon, KLS advisor, and technical team based in Belgium. A computed tomography scan of the mandible was sent electronically to render a 3-dimensional model. Custom cutting guides for resection and scapula graft harvest were fabricated. A custom plate for fixation was also developed. The scapula free flap was successfully placed using custom guides. In this case, the use of a custom guide enabled easier harvest, manipulation, and handling of the scap...

Quality of Life After Total Temporomandibular Joint Prothesis Surgery
Introduction:
Total temporomandibular joint (TMJ) prostheses are increasingly used in patients with joint destruction presenting significant pain and mouth opening limitation. This surgery can be considered as the last resort solution whose goal is to restore the mandible function. The aim of this study was to evaluate the patient quality of life (QoL) before and after TMJ replacement surgery with a total TMJ prosthesis, using a modified QoL scale.
Materials and Methods:
All patients with a total uni or bilateral TMJ prosthesis who could be contacted were included. All patients completed 2 retrospective question...

The Humanistic Approach to Aging and the Plastic Surgeon’s Role
The humanistic approach, including literature and arts, could be a tool for understanding the patient’s mindset and establishing the surgeon’s role. Dorian Gray syndrome, derived from a novel written by Oscar Wilde is a disease with three diagnostic criteria: body dysmorphic disorder, narcissistic regression, and denial of the maturation process. Suppressing patients’ quest for youth is not possible by psychiatric methods. Title of “No Country for Old Men,” written by Cormac McCarthy, was derived from the poem “Sailing to Byzantium,” which William Butler Yeats. Yeats desires to sail to Byzantium, which is a ...

Lateral Pterygoid Muscle Ossification After Intraoral Condylectomy
Conclusions:
Lateral pterygoid muscle ossification is relatively common in patients after condylectomy via intraoral approach. However, its enlargement is self-limited and remains stable 6 months after surgery. it has no adverse effects on the temporomandibular joint functional movement. The Use of Osseodensification for Ridge Expansion and Dental Implant Placement in Narrow Alveolar Ridges: A Prospective Observational Clinical Study
Abstract:
The osseodensification (OD) drilling technique was suggested as an alveolar ridge expansion technique, so the aim of this prospective clinical study was to evaluate the amount of bone expansion obtained by the OD drilling technique and its effect on implant stability in patients with narrow alveolar ridges. The width of the alveolar ridge was measured at the crest before and after implant site preparation, whereas the implant stability was measured using Osstell Beacon implant stability quotient (ISQ). The ISQ values were recorded immediately postoperatively and after 16 weeks. Twenty-three patients were incl...

The Effects of Occlusal Plane Inclination and Dental Decompensation on the Overall Result of Surgical Correction of Class II Malocclusion
Conclusions:
Significant improvement in the incisor inclinations was achieved, but the incisors were inadequately decompensated at the preoperative phase. Surgical correction was limited by the inadequate presurgical decompensation. The surgical alteration of the UOP should be taken into consideration for the surgical planning to obtain better outcomes for Class II patients. (Source: Journal of Craniofacial Surgery)
