Scalp Reconstruction Strategy Based on the Etiology of the Scalp Defects
Abstract: Scalp defects of various etiologies require distinct reconstruction strategies. Therefore, the authors divided scalp defects into the following categories: scar alopecia, open scalp wound, benign or low-grade malignant tumor, and high-grade malignancy. The authors reviewed the experience with scalp reconstruction of a single center to determine the factors that affect the reconstructive choices. Patients who underwent scalp reconstruction between 2008 and 2020 were retrospectively reviewed. Reconstruction methods were classified according to the etiology of the defect and were compared for each etiology. A...

Facial Trauma Call Reimbursement Patterns Among American Society of Maxillofacial Surgery Members
Facial trauma accounts for over 3 million emergency room encounters each year in the United States and places significant financial burden on the health care system and surgeons. However, data on facial trauma call practices among plastic surgeons are lacking. We surveyed members of the American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons (ASMS) regarding their experience with facial trauma call. A 27-question online survey was distributed through e-mail to ASMS members. Forty-five ASMS members completed the survey, of whom 64% were required to take facial trauma call and 44% were compensated for call. Respondents in the North-East ...

Facial Recognition Software Use on Surgically Altered Faces: A Systematic Review
Conclusions: Knowledge of available limitations and advantages can aid in counseling patients regarding personal technology use, security, and quell fears about surgery to evade authorities. Surgical knowledge can be utilized to improve FRS algorithms for postsurgical recognition. (Source: Journal of Craniofacial Surgery)

Study on Size Estimation of Prosthesis in Rhinoplasty Based on Mechanical Test and Analysis
Rhinoplasty is a common plastic surgery. The determination of prosthesis size for rhinoplasty has long been dependent on the surgeon’s experience. Some of the patients suffered from complications after the surgery. In this paper, we present a method for estimating the size of prosthesis in rhinoplasty. A nasal tension tester is designed and implemented. On the basis of the mechanical theory of Hyperelastic Materials, an algorithm for inverse calculation of material parameters is proposed; On the basis of the material parameters, an algorithm for estimating the safety range of nasal stretch is established. The nasal tensi...

Maxillary and Mandibular Healing After Facial Allotransplantation
Conclusion: Le Fort osteotomy demonstrates inferior healing in facial transplantation compared with the nontransplant population. In contrast, the successful healing in the mandible is likely owing to the high density of rich cancellous bone. (Source: Journal of Craniofacial Surgery)

Racial and Socioeconomic Disparities in Prompt Craniosynostosis Workup and Treatment
The purpose of this study was to identify racial and socioeconomic disparities in craniosynostosis evaluation and treatment, from referral to surgery. Patients diagnosed with craniosynostosis between 2012 and 2020 at a single center were identified. Chart review was used to collect demographic variables, age at referral to craniofacial care, age at diagnosis, age at surgery, and surgical technique (open versus limited incision). Multivariable linear and logistic regression models with lasso regularization assessed the independent effect of each variable. A total of 298 patients were included. Medicaid insurance was indepen...

A Combination Method of Costal Cartilage Injection Techniques for Augmentation Rhinoplasty
Conclusions: The combination method can take advantages of the FDCC and MTCC injection techniques. It can effectively lower the incidence of contour irregularities and graft displacement. Meanwhile, it is easy to perform without special procedure, and is time-saving and cartilage-saving. (Source: Journal of Craniofacial Surgery)

Three-Dimensional Analysis of Vomer Volume and Deviation in Patients With Unilateral Cleft Lip and Alveolus
Since almost all patients with an alveolar cleft have a deviated and thickened vomer bone, the purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the vomer shape and the size of the alveolar cleft in patients with unilateral cleft lip and alveolus (CLA). A total of 40 adult patients with unilateral CLA were enrolled, and 40 normal adults without CLA were enrolled as controls. All patients underwent preoperative computed tomography scans and analysis by computer-aided engineering software to obtain the vomer volume (VV), deviated septal angle (DSA), and alveolar cleft volume (ACV). An independent-sample t tes...

A Systematic Review of Primary Rhinoplasty in Patients With Bilateral Cleft Lip
Conclusion: Although the available literature supports PR in patients with bilateral cleft lip with respect to subjective and objective outcomes, nasal growth, and reducing the need for secondary/revision rhinoplasty, there are significant limitations, necessitating large volume studies. Ultrasonography for Serial Monitoring and Management of Cerebrospinal Fluid Dynamic Disorders After Decompressive Craniectomy
Conclusions: Transcranial duplex sonography can efficiently help monitor changes in ventricle size and morphology and intracranial effusions. Due to its noninvasive nature, suitability for bedside application, real-time, and inexpensiveness, TDS can significantly replace cranial computed tomography and become part of the patient’s daily inspection work after DC. Ten-Year Institutional Experience to Predict Risk of Calvarial Bone Flap Loss Using Long-Term Outcome Data
Background: Calvarial bone flap (CBF) loss is a common complication following craniotomy and subsequent skull reconstruction can be challenging. Defining predictors of CBF failure not only improves patient outcomes but reduces the need for complex reconstruction often requiring plastic surgery consultation. As CBF failure can occur many years following craniotomy, this study aimed to determine risk factors of CBF loss using long-term follow-up. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study included patients who underwent craniotomy with CBF reinsertion between 2003 and 2013 at a tertiary academic institution. ...

Degree of Sagittal Suture Fusion, Cephalic Index, and Head Shape in Nonsyndromic Sagittal Craniosynostosis
Conclusions: Decreased fusion of the anterior one-third of the sagittal suture, but not total suture, may paradoxically predict increased severity of scaphocephaly as quantified by CI in nonsyndromic sagittal craniosynostosis. (Source: Journal of Craniofacial Surgery)

Surfing-Related Craniofacial Injuries: A NEISS Database Study
Conclusions: When treating a patient who presents with injury suffered during surfing, a thorough examination of the HN should be performed. Specific attention should be given to evaluation of lacerations, fractures, internal ear injuries, and concussions. Pediatric and young adult patients are at increased risk of concussion. The majority of surfing injuries can be treated in an outpatient context. (Source: Journal of Craniofacial Surgery)

Craniofacial Fellowship Applicant Perceptions of Virtual Interviews
Conclusions: The greatest strengths of virtual interviews were the ability to participate in more interviews, the ease of scheduling, and the cost benefits. Most applicants reported the same or increased ability for self-advocacy with virtual interviews. Following the index interview cycle for 2021, the majority of fellowship applicants now appear to prefer a virtual-only or hybrid format and would recommend virtual interviews in the future. Relating Metopic Craniosynostosis Severity to Intracranial Pressure
Purpose: A subset of patients with metopic craniosynostosis are noted to have elevated intracranial pressure (ICP). However, it is not known if the propensity for elevated ICP is influenced by the severity of metopic cranial dysmorphology. Methods: Children with nonsyndromic single-suture metopic synostosis were prospectively enrolled and underwent optical coherence tomography to measure optic nerve head morphology. Preoperative head computed tomography scans were assessed for endocranial bifrontal angle as well as scaled metopic synostosis severity score (MSS) and cranial morphology deviation score determined b...
