Prescription Stimulants and the Risk of Psychosis: A Systematic Review of Observational Studies
Conclusions
We conclude that observational studies do not support a clear-cut effect of prescribed MPH on psychosis risk but that AMPH has been less well studied and may increase psychosis risk. (Source: Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology)

Combination With Long-Acting Injectable Antipsychotics and Utilization of Nonstandard Formulations as Compliance Enhancing Methods for Clozapine Users: A Systematic Review and A Case Series
Conclusions
Despite the encouraging evidence, the present data are preliminary and mostly based on retrospective studies, and oral-dissolving tablets or oral liquid formulations of clozapine have insufficient evidence for clinical practice. Well-designed, controlled, follow-up studies are needed for both clozapine-LAI combination and different formulations of clozapine. (Source: Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology)

Dosing of Mood Stabilizers for Bipolar Disorder Patients in the Research on Asian Psychotropic Prescription Patterns Consortium Study
Conclusions
Relatively high doses of MSs for BD are prevalent, but vary markedly among Asian countries, and are particularly likely among young males, ill for many years, and given high doses of antipsychotics or ECT. These characteristics allow better identification of patient profiles that can guide treatment of BD patients. (Source: Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology)

COVID-19 Outcomes: Does the Use of Psychotropic Drugs Make a Difference? Accumulating Evidence of a Beneficial Effect of Antidepressants—A Scoping Review
Conclusions
At present, the best evidence of an “anti–COVID-19” potential of ADs exists for fluvoxamine and, to a lesser extent, for fluoxetine. Preliminary evidence had found that patients exposed to SSRI or SNRI substance classes might have a reduced mortality risk and that trazodone might reduce SARS-CoV-2 infection rates. Three studies found no relevant influence of ADs on COVID-19 morbidity and mortality, and 1 study described increased mortality. The latter study, however, did not differentiate between psychotropic medication and ADs. Tricyclics and monoamine oxidase inhibitors are still absolute “dark zo...

Aripiprazole as First-Line Therapy for Late-Life Depression: A Case Note Review
Background
Aripiprazole, structurally considered a third-generation antipsychotic agent, is an effective adjuvant strategy for managing treatment-resistant depression. It has been used successfully as an add-on agent in late-life depression (LLD), but there are no controlled trials on its use as first-line therapy, either alone or in combination with an antidepressant.
Methods
This is a case note review of aripiprazole prescribed to outpatients with LLD as a first-line therapy either in combination with an antidepressant or as a monotherapy. The local ethics committee approved the audit. Case notes of subjects w...

Inverse Association Between Persistence With Antidepressant Medication and Onset of Chronic Pain in Patients With Depression: A Retrospective Cohort Study
Purpose/Background
Despite the known involvement of depression in chronic pain, the association between persistence with and adherence to antidepressant medication and onset of chronic pain in patients with depression remains unclear.
Methods/Procedures
This retrospective cohort study used a Japanese claims database to extract data for adult patients with depression who were prescribed antidepressants between April 2014 and March 2020. Patients were divided into groups according to duration of continuous prescription of antidepressants (≥6 months [persistent group] and (Source: Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology)

Prediction of Corresponding Dose of Transdermal Blonanserin to Oral Dose Based on Dopamine D2 Receptor Occupancy: Unique Characteristics of Blonanserin Transdermal Patch
Conclusions
Predicted D2 occupancy suggested that a 40- to 80-mg/d blonanserin transdermal patch dose corresponds to an 8- to 24-mg/d oral dose for the treatment of schizophrenia. (Source: Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology)

Vital Sign Changes During Intravenous Ketamine Infusions for Depression: An Exploratory Study of Prognostic Indications
Conclusions
Physiologic sensitivity to the effects of ketamine may predict treatment responsiveness. Blood pressure and heart rate did not always increase. Further work should examine possible influences on physiologic responses. (Source: Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology)

When to Use Amisulpride in Adolescents: A Retrospective Chart Examination of Inpatients
Conclusions
Persistent psychotic/mood symptoms, impulsive/disruptive behaviors, and abnormalities in liver function tests were reasons for the amisulpride treatment in adolescents. Randomized placebo-controlled trials are needed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the treatment in adolescents. (Source: Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology)

Acute Hyperkinetic Movement Disorders as a Multifactorial Pharmacodynamic Drug Interaction Between Methylphenidate and Risperidone in Children and Adolescents
Conclusions
As outlined in changes to the US prescribing information for all methylphenidate and risperidone products, health care professionals should be aware that changes to this combination may be associated with a pharmacodynamic drug-drug interaction resulting in acute hyperkinetic movement disorder.
