Effectiveness and Predictors of Discontinuation of Aripiprazole Long-acting Injection: A 12-Month Naturalistic Cohort Study
Conclusions
This study supports the clinical utility of aripiprazole LAI for its licensed indications. The 1-year discontinuation rate is equivalent to that in reports of similarly designed studies of paliperidone LAI. Further exploration of nonmedication factors influencing LAI discontinuation is required. Preferential use of aripiprazole LAI over other medications may be supported due to fewer associated metabolic adverse effects. (Source: Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology)

Risk of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease in Patients With Schizophrenia Treated With Antipsychotic Drugs: A Cross-sectional Study
Background
Although the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in patients with schizophrenia is higher than the prevalence in the general population, little is known regarding nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in patients with schizophrenia.
Procedures
We analyzed the medical records of patients with schizophrenia/schizoaffective disorder (N = 253) who received an abdominal echography.
Results
In total, 108 patients (42.7%) showed NAFLD on abdominal echography. Of these, 13 patients (12.0%) showed signs of fibrosis on abdominal echography. In terms of age distribution, NAFLD was more prevalent in younge...

The Impact of Serotonin Transporter Binding Affinity on the Risk of Bleeding Related to Antidepressants
Conclusions
Our findings strengthen the hypothesis that inhibition of serotonin uptake contributes to the antidepressant-related bleeding risk and suggest an association between the degree of the SERT binding affinity and the bleeding risk. This supports the preferential use of antidepressants with low or no SERT binding affinity in depressed patients at risk of bleeding. (Source: Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology)

Craving Moderates the Effects of Intranasal Oxytocin on Anger in Response to Social Stress Among Veterans With Co-Occurring Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Alcohol Use Disorder
Conclusions
The current study is among the first to examine relevant psychosocial moderators that may influence the effects of oxytocin among veterans with comorbid PTSD and AUD. Although oxytocin attenuated ratings of anger after a stress task among those with low baseline craving, findings suggest that oxytocin may not be as effective at reducing anger, a highly salient factor in PTSD, for individuals experiencing high levels of craving. Findings are consistent with the social salience hypothesis and suggest that individual differences in alcohol craving should be considered when evaluating oxytocin as a potential tr...

Time to Reconsider Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder?: A Case Series Using Phenelzine
Purpose/Background
Despite the availability of a range of efficacious evidence-based treatments for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), not all patients experience sufficient benefit or are able to tolerate them in practice. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) show efficacy in the treatment of depression and certain anxiety disorders (such as social anxiety disorder).
Methods/Procedures
We survey the evidence base from case reports, and clinical trials, regarding use of MAOIs in OCD. We then present new data from a case series collected in routine clinical practice in a specialist clinical service.
Findings...

Prescribing Tamoxifen in Patients With Mood Disorders: A Systematic Review of Potential Antimanic Versus Depressive Effects
Conclusions
The present review highlights tamoxifen treatment as a possible trigger of mood symptoms onset or exacerbation in vulnerable patients. Accordingly, patients with a history of mood disorders may require a close clinical surveillance during tamoxifen use. At the same time, the use of tamoxifen as an antimanic agent in psychiatric settings requires caution, as available evidence came from small-sample studies with short observation time. More studies are needed to define how long-term tamoxifen use may affect the course of bipolar disorder. (Source: Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology)

Quetiapine in the Anxiety Dimension of Mood Disorders: A Systematic Review of the Literature to Support Clinical Practice
Conclusions
Statistical power might be limited by small sample size in 5 of the studies included in our review. Moreover, data on anxiety were a secondary outcome in most studies. Nevertheless, the reported studies show with good levels of concordance that quetiapine is effective in controlling anxiety symptoms in patients with mood disorders. This evidence supports current guidelines and recommendations concerning the use of quetiapine in clinical practice. (Source: Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology)
