Binocular amblyopia treatment improves manual dexterity
To determine whether deficits in manual dexterity in children with amblyopia improve after binocular amblyopia treatment and whether improvements are related to age at treatment, baseline sensory status, or amount of improvement in sensory status with treatment. (Source: Journal of AAPOS)

Smith-Lemli-Optiz syndrome: importance of ophthalmology referral and follow-up
Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome (SLOS) is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the 7-dehydrocholesterol reductase (DHCR7) gene, located on chromosomal region 11q13. This results in reduced cholesterol and increased 7-dehydrocholesterol (7DHC) levels. Accumulation of 7DHC in patients with SLOS can affect multiple organs and display a broad phenotypic expression. Ophthalmic abnormalities related to SLOS are variable but the most common is blepharoptosis. Over 50% of these patients present with self-injurious behavior, such as head banging, which can result in ocular complications and blindness. (Source: Journal of AAPOS)

Anterior segment ischemia following modified Nishida procedure
We report the case of a 68-year-old patient presenting with traumatic bilateral abducens nerve palsies who required surgical intervention. We performed MNP with medial rectus recession. The patient presented with reduced vision, corneal edema, anterior chamber reaction, and pupillary dilation 24 hours after surgery. (Source: Journal of AAPOS)

Tectonic mini-Descemet stripping endothelial keratoplasty (mini-DSEK) in the management of corneal perforation secondary to pediatric blepharokeratoconjunctivitis
We report the outcome of a novel technique, tectonic mini-Descemet stripping endothelial keratoplasty (mini-DSEK), to treat a corneal perforation secondary to BKC in a 14-year-old boy after failure to respond to cyanoacrylate glue application and multilayer amniotic membrane patch grafting. Shaken baby syndrome in an infant treated for retinopathy of prematurity with anti-VEGF injection
We present the case of an infant who received bevacizumab treatment for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and developed retinal hemorrhages 12 weeks later. Although preretinal hemorrhages along the ROP ’s ridge were a concern for recurrence, we decided to investigate other etiologies because of numerous retinal hemorrhages in different retinal layers and their concentration in the posterior pole. Cranial magnetic resonance imaging revealed a new-onset subdural hemorrhage. Factors that were suspi cious for trauma were identified in the detailed history taken from the family by the hospital’s child abuse team. (Source: Journal of AAPOS)

Retinal hemorrhages in abusive head trauma with atraumatic neuroimaging
We report 3 cases of suspected abusive head trauma with retinal hemorrhages on fundus examination and neuroimaging findings not necessarily suggestive of shaking injury. Previous studies have suggested that retinal hemorrhages are rare in patients without neuroimaging abnormalities. These cases demonstrate some common features (rib fractures, developmental delay, and history of abuse) that may increase suspicion for abusive head trauma. Our findings suggest a potential role for ophthalmic consultation in scenarios with high clinical suspicion for abusive head trauma without definitive neuroimaging evidence of head injury. ...
