Superior rectus belly transposition in a case of lost medial rectus muscle
We present a case of exotropia secondary to a lost medial rectus muscle managed using a novel surgical approach, consisting of nasal belly transposition of the superior rectus muscle combined with lateral rectus recession on adjustable sutures. Postoperatively, the patient was orthotropic in primary position and had slight improvement in adduction. Compared to other techniques, this minimal transposition had a relatively low risk of anterior segment ischemia. (Source: Journal of AAPOS)

The effect of sex on retinopathy of prematurity severity among premature mixed-sex multiple gestation infants
This retrospective study of 68 premature infants examined whether there was a difference between male and female mixed-sex multiple gestation infants with regards to stage of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) developed or need for ROP treatment. We found that among mixed-sex twin infants there was no statistically significant difference between sexes in most severe ROP stage developed or need for ROP treatment, but males were treated at an earlier postmenstrual age (PMA) than females, despite females having a lower mean birthweight and slower mean growth velocity compared to males. Skew deviation and ocular tilt reaction as presenting feature of CACNA1A mutation
We report the case of a 9-year-old girl with aggravation of childhood left head tilt without diplopia. She had right hypertropia and right incyclotorsion, which was compatible with skew deviation and ocular tilt reaction (OTR). She had ataxia, epilepsy, and cerebellar atrophy. Her OTR and neurologic dysfunctions were secondary to a channelopathy caused by CACNA1A mutation. (Source: Journal of AAPOS)

Uveitis in pediatric inflammatory bowel disease
There are currently no official uveitis screening guidelines for children with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). In this retrospective cohort study of children with IBD with at least 1 ophthalmologist examination over 12 years, we investigated the prevalence and characteristics of uveitis in pediatric IBD. Outcomes included prevalence of uveitis, age at onset, and clinical characteristics of uveitis. A total of 315 children with IBD (mean age, 11.7 ± 4.3) had 974 eye examinations. Five children (1.6%; 95% CI, 0.7%-3.7%) had uveitis, with mean age at onset of 14.3 ± 5.6 years. (Source: Journal of AAPOS)

Quantifying the efficacy of protective eyewear in pediatric soccer-induced retinal injury
Ocular injury is common in children playing sports. Sports-related eye injuries, if severe enough, can lead to permanent vision impairment. Soccer, the most popular sport in the world, is a sport in which players rarely use protective eyewear. The purpose of this study was to determine how eye injuries are induced by a soccer ball impact and to evaluate whether eye protection influences the effects of impact. (Source: Journal of AAPOS)

Demographic and clinical characteristics of age-related distance esotropia
Age-related distance esotropia (ARDE), is an acquired, small, comitant esodeviation that is greater at distance than at near. It occurs in older adult patients without a history of neurological event or prior strabismus. It has been observed more frequently in White adults than in other racial groups. The purpose of this study was to assess the demographic and clinical characteristics of patients with ARDE presenting at a tertiary neuro-ophthalmology clinic. (Source: Journal of AAPOS)

Pediatric hyperthyroidism and thyroid eye disease management
Thyroid eye disease arising in patients with Graves ’ disease is a complex condition affecting both children and adults that may lead to permanent visual loss. This review provides an update on management of hyperthyroidism and thyroid eye disease in pediatric patients up to 18 years of age. Management options for Graves’ disease include antithyr oid drugs, radioactive iodine therapy, thyroidectomy, and potentially highly selective thyrotropin receptor antagonists and immunomodulator agents. Treatment for thyroid eye disease includes steroids, surgery, and immunomodulator agents. (Source: Journal of AAPOS)
