Potential blindness from nutritional xerophthalmia in autistic patients
Vitamin A is vital to retinal rod function and epithelial cell differentiation. Although uncommon in the developed world, vitamin A deficiency (VAD) secondary to poor diets or gastrointestinal disease has been reported and can lead to xerophthalmia, which is characterized by night blindness and a spectrum of ocular surface changes. Patients with autism spectrum disorder have been shown to have restrictive diets secondary to sensory issues leading to rejection of foods except for those of certain color or texture. Reactivation of retinopathy of prematurity six years after intravitreal injection of bevacizumab
We present the case of an asymptomatic child who developed a very late reactivation of ROP 6 years after its successful treat ment with intravitreal bevacizumab. This case reemphasizes the importance of long-term follow-up after anti-VEGF therapy for ROP until retinal vascularization is complete. It also supports investigating the utility of laser photocoagulation for peripheral avascular retina after successful treatment with anti-VEGF injection for type I ROP. (Source: Journal of AAPOS)

Parental knowledge and behaviors related to prevention and early detection of eye problems in US children
We documented parental knowledge and actions around children ’s eye health using a cross-sectional, nationally representative survey of parents of children 3-18 years of age. Parents more frequently reported their child’s vision was tested at a primary care visit than school, and many were unsure whether their child received school vision testing. One in 10 children with a possible eye problem had not seen an eye doctor in the previous 2 years. Many parents do not have their child wear eye protection during high-risk activities.
