What we have learned from the Infant Aphakia Treatment Study: The 49th Annual Frank D. Costenbader Lecture
Unilateral congenital cataracts lead to deprivation amblyopia, which can be severe. Until the 1970s, they were believed to be always associated with poor visual outcomes. However, advances in our understanding of the plasticity of the infant brain and the development of better surgical techniques allowed good visual outcomes to be obtained in a few of these patients. The Infant Aphakia Treatment Study (IATS) was conducted to provide empirical evidence regarding the best type of optical correction to be used following surgical extraction of the cataract. Acute-onset surgically induced necrotizing scleritis after strabismus surgery
We report the case of a 32-year-old man who underwent uncomplicated strabismus surgery for large-angle exotropia and developed SINS characterized by painless scleral inflammation, choroidal exposure, and globe ectasia within days of surgery. Work-up revealed no associated infectious process or underlying systemic inflammatory condition. Clinical resolution occurred with oral immunosuppression alone, without need for graft. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the surgical volume of pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus fellows
This study used data from the annual fellowship survey over 7 academic years (2014-15 to 2020-21) to describe the trends in surgical experience for pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus fellows and to quantify the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on trainee surgical volume. The overall number of procedures performed by fellows in the primary surgeon role declined during the first academic year impacted by the pandemic but recovered in the second year. There was an increase in the number of intraocular cases performed per year during the 7-year study interval. (Source: Journal of AAPOS)

Factors associated with visual acuity improvement with a binocular digital therapeutic for amblyopia
We combined data from 121 amblyopic children enrolled in two prospective open-label pilot studies and a randomized trial of a binocular digital therapeutic to identify factors associated with positive response to amblyopia treatment. Visual acuity improved ≥1 line in 81% of participants after 12 weeks of therapy. Treatment response was not found to be associated with age, severity of amblyopia, or prior treatment status. Although these findings may suggest broad efficacy for this treatment approach, further investigation in larger cohorts is needed to identify factors associated with treatment response. Incidence and distribution of ocular disorders in the first year of life
To the Editor: In their thorough report on the incidence and distribution of eye diseases affecting children in the first year of life, Mansukhani and colleagues1 reveal that the incidence of ocular eye disease was 20,242/100,000 births per year. Of the authors ’ findings, we take interest in the observation that the majority of ocular disease in newborns is diagnosed and managed by non-ophthalmic primary care providers (PCPs). Because PCPs are at the forefront of pediatric eye care, it is crucial to understand the full extent of their involvement. (Source: Journal of AAPOS)
