Quality of Life Assessment and Comparative Analysis of Anterolateral Thigh Flap and Pectoralis Major Myo-cutaneous Flap for Reconstruction of Post Excision Defects of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma
AbstractPresent study is a comparative evaluation of the financial impact on choice of flap, clinical results as well as post resection quality of life assessment of cancer patients reconstructed with anterolateral thigh(ALT) flap and pectoralis major myo-cutaneous(PMMC) flap. Ethical clearance was obtained from institutional ethical committee. In this non-randomised, prospective study design among 49 oral squamous cell carcinoma cases, 39 cases were reconstructed using PMMC flap and 10 using ALT flap from year 2020 to 2022. These 2 flaps were compared in terms of parameters like time utilised for reconstruction, hospital ...

Dual Drug Therapy Versus Single Drug Therapy in Prevention of Pinna Keloid Recurrence
AbstractKeloids are fibroproliferative disorders caused due to injury to skin. The recurrence rate has been found to be as high as 100% even after surgical excision. The high recurrence rate has led to the need for various adjuvant therapies as a single approach alone has not been found to be efficient in preventing recurrence. This attributes to the need for a multimodal approach. Steroids are found to be useful in preventing recurrence. To evaluate the efficacy of the combination of hyaluronidase with corticosteroid injection compared to corticosteroid injection alone in the prevention of recurrence of keloid after surgi...

Anterior Canal BPPV- A Rare Form of Vertical Canaloliathiasis: Series of 11 Cases
AbstractThe most common cause of peripheral vertigo is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) primarily due to involvement of posterior semicircular canal. BPPV due to anterior canal is rare entity. This is a retrospective study, in which data of 628 patients who underwent vertigo test were analyzed. Amongst which 354 were patients of BPPV. It was found that 305 patients had posterior canal BPPV, 18 patients had lateral canal BPPV and 11 patients had anterior canal BPPV. The VNG data of 11 patients with anterior canal BPPV along with their treatment outcomes was analyzed. Of the eleven patients of anterior canal BPPV,...

Evaluating the Relation Between Mothers ’ Depression Level and Their Cochlear Implanted Children’s Social Performance
AbstractSince the child ’s sensorineural hearing loss and its negative consequences, including weak social skills, is one of the most challenging problems for parents and other family members, the main aim of the present study is to investigate if there is any probable relation between the cochlear implanted children’s social performance and their mothers’ depression level,in this cross-sectional observational analytic research, we implemented the Beck Depression Inventory version- II to evaluate the level of depression in 29 mothers of cochlear implanted children. Also, we assessed their children’s social ab iliti...

Primary Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma of the Thyroid: A Case Report
We present the case of an adolescent who presented with a neck mass and suffered rapid deterioration. Establishment of final diagnosis was possible only because of a skilfully performed pathological examination which revealed a thyroid gland rhabdomyosarcoma. An alveolar variety of rhabdomyosarcoma presenting in the thyroid gland is extremely rare. To the best of our knowledge, only two cases of the aforementioned are documented as yet. Through this report, we aim at highlighting the possibility of such an occurrence and vigilance on part of the treating surgeon so that timely intervention can be instituted. (Source: India...

Pediatric Peripheral Facial Palsy Following Varicella Zoster Infection
AbstractPeripheral facial palsy, characterized by sudden weakness or paralysis of the facial muscles, can arise from various etiologies, including viral infections. While Ramsay Hunt syndrome is well-established in clinical practice, Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV) infection leading to facial nerve palsy in pediatric patients remains relatively uncommon. This comprehensive case report documents the clinical presentation, diagnostic evaluation, treatment, and outcomes of a 10-year-old boy who developed left peripheral facial palsy following a primary Varicella infection. The report underscores the importance of timely recogniti...

A Descriptive Analysis of Nasal Polyposis in HIV Positive Versus HIV Negative Patients
In conclusion, this study underscores the importance of elucidating the complex relationship between HIV infection and NP to optimize diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, particularly in regions with a high HIV prevalence such as South Africa. By comprehensively assessing the clinical, radiological, and histological features of NP in HIV-positive and HIV-negative populations, this research endeavours to enhance our understanding of NP pathophysiology and improve patient outcomes. Shoulder Dysfunction and Quality of Life Following Modified Radical and Selective Neck Dissection: A Prospective Comparative Study
The objective of this study is to analyze the effect of MRND and SND on shoulder function and quality of life in patients of head and neck cancer. Our study is a prospective comparative study on 65 head and neck cancer patients divided into 2 groups —33 in group A (MRND group) and 32 in group B (SND group). Clinical evaluation of shoulder function was done pre-operatively, 1 week, 1 month, 3 month and 6 month post-operatively using arm abduction scores (AAS) and shoulder pain and disability index (SPADI). Nerve-conduction study (NCS) was done pre-operatively and 3 months post-operatively for assessment of SAN. Neck ...

A Case Report of Auditory and Vestibular Findings in a Patient with  Rheumatoid Arthritis and Diabetes Mellitus
AbstractThis single case study describes the audiological and vestibular  findings of a female patient, aged 62, with diabetes mellitus and rheumatoid arthritis. Based on this case study, we hypothesize that individuals with diabetes mellitus and rheumatoid arthritis are more vulnerable to vestibular impairment. The current findings indicate that central vestibular lesi ons and bilateral sensorineural hearing loss are related to rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes. Therefore concluding early detection and follow-up is required to understand pathophysiology in detail. (Source: Indian Journal of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery)

Advancement in Tympanic Membrane Repair: Exploring the Potential of Platelet Rich Fibrin
AbstractTo assess the effectiveness of the autologous plasma-rich fibrin plug technique for repairing small tympanic membrane perforations. Platelet rich fibrin (PRF) is also called second generation platelet rich plasma due to its high amount of growth factors which could be used in tympanic perforation closure. Being autologous, it is readily available with no immunogenic reactions. PRF membrane has a strong elastin fibrin structure containing growth factors and hence can be considered as an ideal sealing material or an adjuvant to the graft in repairing tympanic membrane perforations. Ours is a prospective study. A tota...

Platelet Rich Fibrin Graft in Myringoplasty: Pitfalls and Challenges
AbstractAutologous Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is an amalgam of fibrin mesh, platelets and growth factors that favour wound healing. It can be easily used as a graft material in myringoplasty, making it a promising, easy to harvest and cost effective alternative compared to cartilage or fascia graft used in conventional myringoplasty. 50 patients of small to medium, dry central perforation underwent myringoplasty using PRF graft (Group 1). Results were compared to 50 patients with similar small to medium perforations who underwent conventional transcanal myringoplasty using temporalis fascia graft (Group 2): Outcome of surg...
