Investigation of Pathogenesis and Otolithic Organ Responses in Sailors with Seasickness Using cVEMP
AbstractThere are different theories cited as the cause of Motion Sickness. Asymmetrical otolithic organ function is one of the etiology theories of motion sickness. In our study, the aim was to reveal whether there is a cause originating from the sacculocolic reflex pathway in the physiopathology of seasickness. The patient group included 15 man sailors with diagnosis of seasickness and the control group included 15 man sailors without seasickness in our study. Cervical evoked myogenic vestibular potential (cVEMP) findings were compared between the groups. In the right and left ears of sailors with seasickness, the mean l...

Role of Neuroradiological Imaging in Progressive Sensorineural Hearing Loss: A Retrospective Study
ConclusionThis is the first retrospective study to determine prevalence and type of neuro-radiological lesions detected on screening magnetic resonance imaging in patients with progressive sensorineural hearing loss. We recommend screening MRI brain in patients with progressive SNHL aged below 60 years and all the described neuroradiological finding provide differential diagnosis. Definition and classification of progressive sensorineural hearing loss should be formulated to standardize the management. Further multi-institutional studies are required to identify social, occupational, genetic, or other factors that can caus...

Role of Memantine in Limiting Cochleotoxicity in Rats
AbstractΟur aim was to test whether amikacin’s well-known cochleotoxic effects could be suppressed, depending on whether an NMDA-antagonist (memantine) was administered simultaneously with or after amikacin treatment. Forty Wistar rats were used in this experiment. Ten rats acted as controls and received no medication (group A). Amikacin (200 mg/kg) was administered intraperitoneally (i.p.) once daily for 14 days to 10 animals in group B; amikacin (200 mg/kg) was administered concurrently with memantine (10 mg/kg, i.p., once daily) to the same 10 animals in group C. Group D was given intraperito neal memantine (10 m...

Persistent Buccal Ulcer with Underlying Non-Neoplastic Ectopic Lymphoid Aggregates: A Tonsillar Tissue?
We presented a case of a 46-year-old woman from Saudi Arabia with a persistent buccal ulcer, measuring 0.4  × 0.4 × 0.3 cm. After surgical excision of the lesion was performed using both general and local anesthesia, its microscopic examination revealed keratinized squamous epithelium with surface ulcerations in the buccal mucosa. Beneath the epithelium, there was granulation tissue, scattered and clustered lymphoid tissue, and reactive germinal centers with tingible body microphages. These lymphoid clusters infiltrated the adjacent skeletal muscles and fat. The final diagnosis was ectopic oral tonsillar tissue ...

Role of Topical Estrogen in Outcomes of Myringoplasty: Does it Really Affect the Results of Graft Success and Hearing Thresholds?
This study was carried out from January 2021 to December 2022 in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, of a tertiary teaching hospital in North India. Patients were assessed by history, examination, otoscopy, Audiometry, and oto-endoscopy. A total of 88 patients were taken out of which 44 patients underwent myringoplasty in which topical estrogen (estradiol valerate solution) was used, and the remaining 44 patients were taken as controls. Patients were then assessed post-operatively based on Audiometry results and graft uptake status. In the estrogen group successful Graft uptake was in seen 40 (90.9%) patients and failed...

Examining Diagnostic Errors in the Field of Otorhinolaryngology within the Challenging Landscape of Limited-Resource Healthcare
This study aims to analyze diagnostic mismatches in otorhinolaryngology within a low-resource healthcare environment. A publicly available dataset assessing diagnostic outcomes from non-otorhinolaryngology clinicians and ENT specialists was analyzed. The dataset included demographic characteristics, referral diagnoses, and final ENT specialist diagnoses. Descriptive statistics and appropriate statistical tests were employed to assess the prevalence of diagnostic mismatches and associated factors. The analysis comprised 1544 cases. The prevalence of diagnostic mismatches between non-otorhinolaryngology clinicians and ENT sp...

The Thyroidea Ima Artery Arising from the Aortic Arch: A Rare Anatomical Variation
AbstractA 73-year-old man underwent computed tomography (CT) angiography assessment of the head and neck vasculature. An incidental note of the thyroidea ima artery arising from the aortic arch was made. Presence of thyroidea ima artery may have clinical importance prior to neck surgeries and minimally invasive interventions. (Source: Indian Journal of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery)

Management Strategy of a Grade-3 Cerebrospinal Fluid Leak Repair Following Endoscopic Endonasal Transsphenoidal Excision of Pituitary Macroadenoma
AbstractA skull- base defect with grade-3 cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak following a pituitary macroadenoma removal is rare and challenging. We provide a simple sample model of multilayer closure with naturally available hard and soft tissue components. Tamponade was provided to the reconstructed site with a simple inflated Foley ’s catheter bulb. There was no repair failure and cavities were well mucosalised on follow-up. Mucosal and turbinate preservation was fully achieved in this method as no turbinate flaps were raised or large raw surface exposure was there. Comparison Between the Superior Pedicle Retro Auricular Flap and the Masson ’s Revolving Door Flap for Coverage of Conchal Defects
AbstractPost operative defect of the external ear result mainly from the resection of skin cancers of this region, hence the need for an adequate plasty to avoid any stenosis or deformation, this article compares 2 retroauricular flap covering techniques through 2 cases of patients with conchal basal cell carcinoma the first one was a 65 years old male patient who had for 2 years a basal cell carcinoma of the postero-superior part of the concha of the right ear, a total removal of the tumor was made with a successful covering of the substance loss by a retroauricular flap with superior pedicle. The second patient was a 66 ...

Academic Impact and Quality of Life Among Otorhinolaryngology Residents During COVID-19 Pandemic in South India
AbstractThe COVID-19 pandemic has led to a major public health crisis. Residents entered the frontline in triaging and treating COVID-19 patients, working overtime to meet the growing demand. Surgical practice and educational activities were restricted, thus affecting resident training. There was also a great risk to their mental health. Our study aims to assess the academic impact and quality of life including mental health status among year I, year II and year III otorhinolaryngology residents during the pandemic. A cross-sectional study was conducted among postgraduates and junior residents working in otorhinolaryngolog...
