A pilot study exploring the use of hyaluronic acid in treating insertional achilles tendinopathy
CONCLUSION: The pilot study presents HA injections as a potentially effective treatment for IAT, while interpretation of these findings must take into account the variability in results, indicating a range of patient responses. It encourages further research to confirm these findings and to explore HA's full potential in managing IAT, despite the limitations of a small sample size and lack of control group.PMID:38589277 | DOI:10.1177/10225536241242086 (Source: Hand Surgery)

Genomic and Pathologic Profiling of Very Well-Differentiated Gastric Adenocarcinoma of Intestinal Type: A Study With Emphasis on Diffuse-Type Transformation
This study aimed to better characterize the genomic and pathologic features, with a focus on factors associated with diffuse-type transformation. A total of 58 cases with (n=31) and without (n=27) diffuse-type transformation were analyzed for molecular and pathologic features. First, comprehensive deep DNA sequencing was conducted in 18 cases (discovery cohort), followed by a digital droplet polymerase chain reaction of hot spot RHOA mutations in 40 cases (validation cohort). In total, RHOA mutations were the most common alteration (34%), followed by loss of ARID1A (12%), p53 alterations (10%), and CLDN18::ARHGAP26/6 fusio...

The Effects of Radial Longitudinal Deficiency on Long-Term Use of the Thumb in Pediatric Patients Following Index Pollicization
CONCLUSIONS: Individuals with moderate to severe RLD have unique anatomical factors that affect outcomes after pollicization. These individuals use their thumbs for fewer activities, have weaker grasp, and retain more primitive grasp patterns compared with those who have milder forms of RLD.TYPE OF STUDY/LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Prognostic IV.PMID:38583165 | DOI:10.1016/j.jhsa.2024.02.010 (Source: Hand Surgery)

De Quervain tendinitis after total trapeziometacarpal joint arthroplasty: biomechanical evaluation of tendon excursion in the first extensor tendon compartment
Hand Surg Rehabil. 2024 Apr 5:101686. doi: 10.1016/j.hansur.2024.101686. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDe Quervain's tenosynovitis is the most common complication after total trapeziometacarpal joint replacement. Etiology is unclear. Implantation of a ball-in-socket implant changes the biomechanics of the normal trapeziometacarpal saddle joint and increases its range of motion. The present study demonstrates that this procedure also significantly increases excursion of the abductor pollicis longus and extensor pollicis brevis tendons during thumb flexion-extension, and not during thumb abduction-adduction. Increased tendon...

100 anastomoses: a two-year single-center experience with robotic-assisted micro- and supermicrosurgery for lymphatic reconstruction
In conclusion, we show the successful implementation of the Symani® Surgical System into our clinical practice of lymphatic reconstruction. Although the necessary intraoperative setup and the use of intrinsic motion scaling lead to a slight increase in operating time, the presented study demonstrates the advantages of robotic assistance which becomes particularly evident in lymphatic surgery due to the involved deep surgical sites and the need for supermicrosurgical techniques.PMID:38581589 | PMC:PMC10998780 | DOI:10.1007/s11701-024-01937-3 (Source: Hand Surgery)

Complex dorsal metacarpophalangeal joint dislocation associated with proximal metacarpal fracture: case report and review of the literature
CONCLUSION: Complex dorsal metacarpophalangeal joint (MCPJ) dislocations are rare. Open reduction is typically necessary for optimal outcomes. Complications such as stiffness, osteoarthritis can arise, emphasizing the importance of accurate diagnosis and appropriate management.PMID:38581936 | DOI:10.1016/j.ijscr.2024.109532 (Source: Hand Surgery)

Influence of analytical procedures on miRNA expression analyses in saliva samples
J Craniomaxillofac Surg. 2024 Mar 18:S1010-5182(24)00114-8. doi: 10.1016/j.jcms.2024.03.030. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAim of this study was to demonstrate the influence of different analytical procedures and techniques on the resulting miRNA expression profile in healthy control subjects and tumor patients using the oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) model and to demonstrate the technical and biological reproducibility. Body fluids such as saliva are suitable for non-invasive miRNA analysis because ubiquitously circulating miRNA can be found in them. It was technically possible to distinguish between healthy and dise...

Hypoxia as a stimulus for tissue formation: The concept of organogenesis in microsurgically vascularized tissue engineering constructs
J Craniomaxillofac Surg. 2024 Mar 13:S1010-5182(24)00104-5. doi: 10.1016/j.jcms.2024.03.020. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAxial vascularization of tissue constructs is essential to maintain an adequate blood supply for a stable regeneration of a clinically relevant tissue size. The versatility of the arterio-venous loop (AVL) has been previously shown in various small and large animal models as well as in clinical reports for bone regeneration. We have previously demonstrated the capability of the AVL to induce axial vascularization and to support the nourishment of tissue constructs in small animal models after applying ...
