Hyperuricemia as an independent risk factor for achilles tendon rupture in male: a case-control study
CONCLUSION: Our study confirmed that, as in previous results, higher BMI, smoking, and total cholesterol are risk factors for ATR, Hyperuricemia may contribute to the development of ATR, and adjunctive tests for TC and UA in the blood biochemistry may be helpful in predicting the risk of ATR.PMID:38561771 | DOI:10.1186/s13018-024-04698-9 (Source: Hand Surgery)

Outcomes of Ulnar Shortening Osteotomy with an Intramedullary Bone Graft for Idiopathic Ulnar Impaction Syndrome
CONCLUSIONS: USO with an intramedullary bone graft for idiopathic UIS has favorable radiological and clinical outcomes. The advantage of this technique is the significant shortening of bone union time.PMID:38562625 | PMC:PMC10973609 | DOI:10.4055/cios23266 (Source: Hand Surgery)

Low Hand Grip Strength, Mid-Upper Arm Muscle Area, Calf Circumference, Serum Albumin Level, and Muscle Fiber Diameter as Risk Factors for Independent Walking Inability in Patients with Hip Fracture 6 Weeks after Bipolar Hemiarthroplasty Surgery
CONCLUSIONS: Low MUAMA, serum albumin levels, and muscle fiber diameter are direct risk factors for the inability to walk independently in hip fracture patients 6 weeks after bipolar hemiarthroplasty.PMID:38562634 | PMC:PMC10973617 | DOI:10.4055/cios23256 (Source: Hand Surgery)

Long-Term Outcomes of High-Flexion Design Total Knee Arthroplasty with a Short Posterior Flange
CONCLUSIONS: The Vega Knee System provided good clinical results in the long-term follow-up period. Although the VEGA Knee System showed acceptable implant survivorship, loosening of the femoral component occurred in about 3.4% of the patients. For more accurate evaluation of the survivorship of high-flexion design TKA with a short posterior flange, it is necessary to conduct more long-term follow-up studies targeting diverse races, especially Asians who frequently perform high-flexion activities.PMID:38562641 | PMC:PMC10973616 | DOI:10.4055/cios23133 (Source: Hand Surgery)

Midterm Comparative Analysis of Short Femoral Stem Survivorship in Dorr Type A Femurs
CONCLUSIONS: The SMF stem might be less reliable than previously reported, showing a high failure rate and increased radiologic complications. Thus, its use for THA in Dorr Type A femurs needs caution. On the other hand, the Metha stem showed comparable outcomes to the shortened tapered Tri-Lock BPS.PMID:38562642 | PMC:PMC10973610 | DOI:10.4055/cios23268 (Source: Hand Surgery)

Surgical Management of Vascular Malformations of the Upper Extremity: A 12-Year Retrospective Cohort Study
CONCLUSION: Upper extremity VMs were composed of diverse conditions with varying vessel types, size, depth, and anatomic sites. Surgical excision of VMs of the UE was safe and effective. A majority of VMs were fully excised after 1 procedure and frequently closed primarily with relatively low complication rates. Future work should investigate decision-making and outcomes of all treatment options of VMs of the UE for optimal functionality and aesthetics.PMID:38556661 | DOI:10.1097/SAP.0000000000003852 (Source: Hand Surgery)

Early Return of Motion in Patients With Intramedullary Screw Placement for Metacarpal and Phalangeal Fracture Fixation
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicate that the IM screw provides reliable fixation for a wide variety of fracture patterns with a low complication rate and offers early return to functional use.PMID:38556662 | DOI:10.1097/SAP.0000000000003849 (Source: Hand Surgery)

Omega Plate Fixation of Comminuted Olecranon Fractures: Technique and Case Series
We present the omega plate technique, which utilizes a mini-fragment plate passed under the triceps tendon insertion, allowing maximal implant surface area contact with small, proximal olecranon fracture fragments. The mini-fragment plate is not placed on the dorsal subcutaneous border of the ulna, which allows it to capture medial and lateral fragments of cortical comminution and may contribute to less soft tissue irritation.PMID:38556901 | DOI:10.1097/BTH.0000000000000480 (Source: Hand Surgery)

Surgeons Factors and Trends Associated with the Use of Subacromial Decompression at the Time of Rotator Cuff Repair
CONCLUSIONS: Although SAD use during RCR appears to be decreasing, multiple surgeon and practice factors (years in practice, fellowship training, volume, and academic practice) are associated with a change in SAD use.CLINICAL RELEVANCE: These data suggest that early-career surgeons entering practice are likely driving the trend of declining SAD. Despite evidence suggesting limited clinical benefits, SAD remains commonly performed; future studies should endeavor to determine factors associated with practice changes among surgeons.PMID:38556963 | DOI:10.1016/j.jhsa.2024.02.002 (Source: Hand Surgery)

Clinical evaluation of bone quality of particulate cancellous bone and marrow, and implant prosthetic rehabilitation
This study aimed to subjectively evaluate bone quality in the particulate cancellous bone and marrow (PCBM) graft area and to assess the survival rates of implants. A retrospective review was conducted based on patient age, sex, diagnosis, reconstructed site, number of implants, prosthetic type, and duration of follow-up. Images from computed tomography (CT) before implant insertion were obtained and used in this study. We selected a 4.0-mm diameter × 8.0-mm length region of interest in the implant placement area, and measured the CT attenuation value. No significant correlations were seen between CT attenuation values an...
