Short-term efficacy and safety of neoadjuvant pyrotinib plus taxanes for early HER2-positive breast cancer: a single-arm exploratory phase II trial
CONCLUSIONS: In female patients with HER2-positive non-metastatic BC, neoadjuvant pyrotinib monotherapy plus taxanes appears to show promising clinical benefit and controllable AEs [Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR2100050870)]. The long-term efficacy and safety of this regime warrant further verification.PMID:38601287 | PMC:PMC11002487 | DOI:10.21037/gs-24-38 (Source: Hand Surgery)

Medical Students Understanding of The Scope of Plastic Surgery
Conclusion Improving medical students' education quality can enhance their perception and awareness of plastic surgery. Students should be taught the broader scope of plastic surgery. The inclusion of formal training during undergraduation is the essence of time and should be added to or improved during plastic surgery rotations with more emphasis on reconstructive and hand/peripheral nerve surgery. Student-led interest groups can be a useful tool for educating students about their specialty.PMID:38596147 | PMC:PMC11001442 | DOI:10.1055/a-2219-2411 (Source: Hand Surgery)

International Microsurgery Club and World Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery Webinar: Career Building in Microsurgery
Arch Plast Surg. 2024 Apr 8;51(2):258-261. doi: 10.1055/a-2229-3420. eCollection 2024 Mar.ABSTRACTCareer building can be challenging for young surgeons, especially when topics such as lifestyle, work-life balance and subspecialization arise. Suggestions and advice from senior colleagues is very valuable but many young surgeons do not have such opportunities or are limited to a few senior surgeons. The International Microsurgery Club (IMC), in collaboration with the World Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery, organized a combined webinar for this topic and invited world renowned microsurgery masters polled by the IMC memb...

Transplantation of a free fillet flap from discarded fingers for repair of a finger pulp skin defect: a case report
CONCLUSIONS: Spare-part surgery is a surgical approach that effectively saves and utilizes tissue that would otherwise be discarded in cases of severe limb trauma. This idea may be applied to treatment of severe injuries to multiple fingers. Additionally, in the process of tissue transplantation and repair, attention should be given to protecting the tissue in the recipient area to avoid damage to the original undamaged tissue structure, which can adversely affect healing and recovery of the tissue.PMID:38596165 | PMC:PMC11002096 | DOI:10.3389/fsurg.2024.1363827 (Source: Hand Surgery)

Acute Paraplegia Caused by Spinal Epidural Empyema Following Infectious Cellulitis of the Hand: Case Report and Literature Review
Conclusion Spinal epidural abscess is often underdiagnosed, which can lead to delays in treatment and serious complications. The relationship between cellulitis and spinal epidural abscess may be related to the spread of infection through the lymphatic or blood system.PMID:38596232 | PMC:PMC11001457 | DOI:10.1055/a-2267-1810 (Source: Hand Surgery)

Self-induced Hot Water Finger Burn Trying to Get Feeling Back after Ropivacaine Block
Plast Reconstr Surg Glob Open. 2024 Apr 5;12(4):e5704. doi: 10.1097/GOX.0000000000005704. eCollection 2024 Apr.ABSTRACTThis case report is about a patient with self-induced hot water burns several hours after an infraclavicular block with ropivacaine for a scaphoid fracture operation. This patient was honest about what happened. However, some patients are too embarrassed to admit what they did to themselves. The injury may be misdiagnosed by the emergency department physician or by the surgeon because the history is incomplete. The resulting burn, which can lead to fingertip loss when severe, can be erroneously misdiagnose...

Lateral Epicondylitis: Treatment Preferences from the Potential Patient Perspective
CONCLUSIONS: It is important to include patient preferences in treatment discussions of lateral epicondylitis. Survey respondents preferred formal physical therapy for initial treatment. A surprising majority of respondents were likely to consider a PRP injection. With prolonged symptoms, respondents were interested in discussions of surgical intervention and thus, it should continue to be offered to patients with recalcitrant symptoms.PMID:38596580 | PMC:PMC11000778 | DOI:10.1097/GOX.0000000000005706 (Source: Hand Surgery)

Ulnar Ray Deficiency: A New Classification and a Unique Case Report
We report on a unique case with hand-on-flank deformity on the one side and limb truncation on the contralateral side. The standard of care for the hand-on-flank deformity is to do humerus osteotomy to reposition the hand anteriorly. However, the right limb truncation in our patient made the senior author decide not to do the osteotomy. Final assessment showed that the posterior hand position enabled the patient to reach the ano-genital areas, the pocket, and the mouth. It was concluded that in case of hand-on-flank deformity in one limb and limb truncation of the contralateral limb, osteotomies to bring the hand anteriorl...

The Contribution of the Distal Oblique Band to Distal Radioulnar Joint Stability
CONCLUSIONS: The current results indicate that the DOB may not substantially contribute to DRUJ stability in the presence of a disrupted TFCC.CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Stability of the DRUJ after TFCC injury may not be substantially improved by the presence of a DOB. Thus, the clinical importance of DOB reconstruction remains unclear.PMID:38597836 | DOI:10.1016/j.jhsa.2024.03.001 (Source: Hand Surgery)

Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn the 1960s, the American Society for Surgery of the Hand embarked on an endeavor to improve and standardize the educational experience in hand surgery. By the 1980s, numerous programs existed across the country with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education formally recognizing orthopedic surgery-based fellowships in 1985 and plastic surgery-based fellowships in 1986. In order to sit for what was then termed the Certificate of Additional Qualification examination, applicants had to demonstrate p...

Ultrasound identification of hand and wrist anatomical structures by hand surgeons new to ultrasonographic techniques
CONCLUSION: Hand surgeons new to ultrasound are most of the time able to identify hand and wrist anatomical structures. Comparison of their first and second tests showed significant potential for improvement in anatomical structure identification and detection time of those, especially in surgeons with limited surgical experience.PMID:38597950 | DOI:10.1007/s00276-024-03355-4 (Source: Hand Surgery)
