Diagnostic Performance of Artificial Intelligence for Detection of Scaphoid and Distal Radius Fractures: A Systematic Review
CONCLUSIONS: AI models demonstrated excellent performance for detecting scaphoid and distal radius fractures, with the majority demonstrating comparable or better performance compared with human experts. Worse performance was demonstrated on occult fractures. However, when trained specifically on difficult fracture patterns, AI models demonstrated improved performance.CLINICAL RELEVANCE: AI models can help detect commonly missed occult fractures while enhancing workflow efficiency for distal radius and scaphoid fracture diagnoses. As performance varies based on fracture type, future studies focused on wrist fracture detect...

Hand skeletal features of children and adolescents with different growth statuses and periods
CONCLUSIONS: The epiphyseal symmetry of the proximal phalanges is poor in short stature children and adolescents, and the angle between the metacarpal and phalangeal axes is larger in children and adolescents with short stature than those with normal height and good growth status. A negative correlation was found between the epiphyseal symmetry of the proximal phalanges and asymmetrical stress.PMID:38545069 | PMC:PMC10963808 | DOI:10.21037/qims-23-26 (Source: Hand Surgery)

Schwannoma in the Thenar Eminence: a Case Report
This report describes a rare presentation of schwannoma in the thenar aspect of a surgeon and reviews the literature. A 35-year-old surgeon had a slow-growing swelling in his left thenar eminence. Clinical and radiological findings suggested it was a well-encapsulated mass within the abductor pollicis brevis muscle. A complete surgical excision was done, and the histopathological findings confirmed schwannoma, a benign peripheral nerve tumor. The surgeon remained symptom-free and had no recurrence at 1 year of follow-up. Though a benign peripheral nerve tumor is rare in the hand, it remains one of the differential diagnose...

Management of Giant Cell Tumors in Hand and Foot
Indian J Surg Oncol. 2024 Mar;15(Suppl 1):86-93. doi: 10.1007/s13193-020-01153-z. Epub 2020 Aug 1.ABSTRACTThe aim of this study is to determine the treatment modalities and clinical characteristics of 12 patients diagnosed with giant cell tumor (GCT) of the hand and foot. The clinical findings, treatment modalities, and treatment failures of 12 patients with giant cell tumors of the hand and foot bones between 2007 and 2018 years were evaluated retrospectively. The average age at diagnosis was 29.2 ± 14.9 std. (between 16 and 62 years old), 8 males (66.6%) and 4 females (33.3%). Tumor was more frequently located in the ta...

Steroid versus placebo injections and wrist splints in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome: a systematic review and network meta-analysis
J Hand Surg Eur Vol. 2024 Mar 28:17531934241240380. doi: 10.1177/17531934241240380. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials compared the effectiveness of corticosteroid injections with placebo injections and wrist splints for carpal tunnel syndrome, focusing on symptom relief and median nerve conduction velocity. Within 3 months of the corticosteroid injection, there was a modest statistically significant difference in symptom relief compared to placebo injections and wrist splints, as measured by the Symptom Severity Subscore of the Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire; however,...

A Geospatial Analysis of Hand Trauma Care: A Statewide Cross-Sectional Study
CONCLUSIONS: Patients in areas with greater neighborhood disadvantage may experience delayed operative care after acute hand trauma. Cat bite injuries to the hand and forearm: the impact of antibiotic treatment on microbiological findings and clinical outcome
CONCLUSIONS: Our data do not suggest that early antibiotic administration or delayed surgical treatment affects the outcome of the microbiological workup following cat bite injuries to the hand and forearm. The microbiological outcome did not affect the complication rate, treatment time, and total treatment costs.PMID:38546860 | DOI:10.1007/s00402-024-05277-7 (Source: Hand Surgery)

Combined Wrist Extensor Tenodesis and Tendon Transfers for Severe Spastic Flexed Wrist Deformity: Surgical Technique and Case Series
Tech Hand Up Extrem Surg. 2024 Mar 28. doi: 10.1097/BTH.0000000000000479. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSpastic wrist flexion deformities both limit the functional use of the hand for grasp and pinch producing a stigmatizing appearance. Tendon transfers and total wrist arthrodesis are treatment options for this condition depending on the patient's characteristics, the latter the most commonly used in patients with severe wrist flexion deformities. Tendon transfers alone in this scenario have the tendency for recurrent deformity due to tenorrhaphy failure or soft tissue creep and resultant loss of tension. Total wrist arthr...

Value-Driven Pediatric Supracondylar Humerus Fracture Care: Implementing Evidence-Based Practices
J Am Acad Orthop Surg Glob Res Rev. 2024 Mar 28;8(4). doi: 10.5435/JAAOSGlobal-D-24-00058. eCollection 2024 Apr 1.ABSTRACTSupracondylar humerus fractures are high-volume injuries in children; therefore, value-driven treatment has far-reaching implications for patients and families as well as healthcare systems. Children younger than 5 years can remodel posterior angulation. Most Type IIa fractures will maintain alignment after closed reduction. Many patients with surgical fractures can safely wait for nonemergent fixation. Outpatient surgery is associated with shorter surgical time, lower costs, and fewer return visits to ...

Uncommon Anatomical Causes of Ulnar Compression: A Narrative Review
CONCLUSIONS: In addition to considering common compression points, it is important to be aware that proximal compression symptoms, such as pain and a positive Tinel sign at the medial elbow, may be attributed to a hypertrophic AE or vascular anomaly. Distal compression symptoms encompass swelling, along with pain and a positive Tinel sign at the distal forearm. Various structures contributing to distal compression include an accessory abductor digiti minimi muscle, an accessory or anomalous palmaris longus muscle, or an accessory or hypertrophic flexor carpi ulnaris muscle. The occurrence of fibrous bands exhibits variabil...
