Gynecomastia Surgery in 4996 Male Patients Over 14 Years: A Retrospective Analysis of Surgical Trends, Predictive Risk Factors, and Short-Term Outcomes
CONCLUSION: In this study, we analyzed 4996 male adult GS patients from the ACS-NSQIP database, revealing an increased caseload and significant general surgeon involvement. Risk factors like bleeding disorders, inpatient status, and prior sepsis were linked to postoperative complications, while BMI was crucial for predicting adverse events. Overall, our findings may aid in enhancing patient care through advanced preoperative screening and closer perioperative management.LEVEL OF EVIDENCE III: This journal requires that authors assign a level of evidence to each article. Efficacy of Intra-Articular Corticosteroid Injection for Nonsurgical Management of Trapeziometacarpal Osteoarthritis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials
CONCLUSIONS: Despite short-term improvement with intra-articular corticosteroid injections, there was no significant difference in pain and functional outcomes following intra-articular corticosteroid injections compared to hyaluronic acid or platelet-rich plasma administration. Given the affordability, ease of administration, and efficacy associated with corticosteroids, they are a favorable option when considering the choice of intra-articular injection for the management of TMC OA.TYPE OF STUDY/LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Therapeutic II.PMID:38530683 | DOI:10.1016/j.jhsa.2024.02.001 (Source: Hand Surgery)

Modified Extensor Indicis Proprius Opponensplasty
Tech Hand Up Extrem Surg. 2024 Mar 27. doi: 10.1097/BTH.0000000000000478. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTExtensor indicis proprius (EIP) opponensplasty is one of the commonly used techniques to restore thumb abduction and opposition in patients with thenar muscle dysfunction from various causes of median nerve palsy. However, its subcutaneous route around the distal ulna may not represent a straight line of pull, and part of the extensor hood sometimes has to be harvested along with the EIP tendon to gain adequate length to reach the insertion. The purpose of the study is to present the alternative method of EIP opponenspla...

The Role of the Fascia-Only Anterolateral Thigh Flap in Extremity Reconstruction: The Fascia-Only Anterolateral Thigh Flap
CONCLUSIONS: The fALT-free flap can be successfully used in extremity reconstruction. The ALT fascia has robust perfusion that allows for the harvest of a large flap that can be surfaced with a split thickness skin graft. Its thin pliable tissue provides excellent contour for the hand, distal leg, and foot that does not require future thinning, optimizing the cosmetic and functional result.PMID:38527348 | DOI:10.1097/SAP.0000000000003878 (Source: Hand Surgery)

Surgical treatment of trigger finger: a comparative study of A1 pulley opening versus ulnar superficialis slip resection
Hand Surg Rehabil. 2024 Mar 23:101687. doi: 10.1016/j.hansur.2024.101687. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTrigger finger is a common condition. Surgery most frequently involves opening the A0 and A1 pulleys. However, this shows limited effectiveness in correcting proximal interphalangeal joint fixed flexion deformity. The present study aimed to compare clinical outcomes between two surgical techniques for trigger finger treatment. This retrospective study included 127 patients, 72 of whom underwent resection of the ulnar slip of the flexor superficialis, and 55 underwent opening of the pulleys. Study data comprised patient c...

Meta-analysis and trial sequential analysis of pancreatic stump closure using a hand-sewn or stapler technique in distal pancreatectomy
In conclusion, reinforced stapler closure in DP may reduce risk of clinically relevant POPF compared to hand-sewn closure or stapler closure without reinforcement. Future randomized research is needed to provide stronger evidence.PMID:38522846 | DOI:10.14701/ahbps.24-015 (Source: Hand Surgery)

Sarcoma Size and Limb Dimensions Predict Complications, Recurrence, and Death in Patients with Soft Tissue Sarcoma in the Thigh: A Multidimensional Analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Thigh width outperformed BMI in association with postoperative complications. This may create an opportunity for intervention, where weight loss can play a role during the neoadjuvant therapy period to potentially reduce complications. Sarcoma-to-thigh width and thickness ratios, particularly the latter, hold substantial predictive value in terms of STS recurrence. Moreover, thigh thickness is an independent predictor of survival.PMID:38520583 | DOI:10.1245/s10434-024-15183-2 (Source: Hand Surgery)

Proximal phalanx flexor tendon tenodesis after severe frostbite in a rock climber
Hand Surg Rehabil. 2024 Mar 21:101685. doi: 10.1016/j.hansur.2024.101685. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA 32 year-old climber sustained a grade IV frostbite injury to the right hand which required amputation at the neck of the proximal phalanges of all the long fingers. To increase range of motion and strength in the remaining metacarpophalangeal joints, tenodesis of the flexor digitalis superficialis and profundus tendons onto the proximal phalanges was performed. Several revisions for removal of bony spurs, dorsal skin advancement flaps and web space deepening were necessary. After 2 years, the patient achieved 10-0-100 ...

Comparison of Locking Plate Alone and Locking Plate Combined with 3D Printed Polymethylmethacrylate Augmentation in Treating Proximal Humerus Fractures in the Elderly
CONCLUSIONS: For PHF in elderly patients, the combination of LP fixation and PMMA prosthesis augmentation effectively improved humeral head support and reduction maintenance, providing satisfactory outcomes both radiologically and clinically. This technique also reduced the incidence of screw perforation associated with plate fixation alone, making it a reasonable option to ensure satisfactory clinical outcomes.PMID:38521483 | DOI:10.1016/j.jse.2024.01.046 (Source: Hand Surgery)

Dorsal spanning plate fixation in perilunate injuries: a case report
Case Reports Plast Surg Hand Surg. 2024 Mar 20;11(1):2332223. doi: 10.1080/23320885.2024.2332223. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTA 63-year-old male presented with a trans-scaphoid lunate dislocation after a ten-foot fall. Internal fixation included placement of a dorsal spanning plate (DSP). One-year follow-up yielded a satisfactory outcome. A rigid DSP is a useful tool in acute perilunate injuries to protect internal fixation constructs and help with injury rehabilitation.PMID:38516202 | PMC:PMC10956926 | DOI:10.1080/23320885.2024.2332223 (Source: Hand Surgery)

Flexor Pollicis Longus Reconstruction After Rupture Following Distal Radius Fixation With Volar Locking Plate: A Technique Guide
Tech Hand Up Extrem Surg. 2024 Mar 22. doi: 10.1097/BTH.0000000000000474. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFlexor pollicis longus rupture is an uncommon but potentially debilitating complication after volar locking plate fixation of distal radius fractures, occurring secondary to tendon attrition against the implant. This nature of tendon injury typically precludes primary repair. This paper will illustrate 2 reconstruction techniques, an interpositional tendon graft and a tendon transfer, that have been utilized successfully by the authors.PMID:38516925 | DOI:10.1097/BTH.0000000000000474 (Source: Hand Surgery)
