A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Low-Residue Diet Versus Clear Liquid Diet: Which Is Better for Bowel Preparation Before Colonoscopy?
The goal of this systematic review was to compare the clear liquid diet and the low-residue diet to determine which is better for bowel preparation before colonoscopy. A literature search for randomized controlled trials on the effects of employing the clear liquid diet and low-residue diets before colonoscopy was conducted in major online English databases (PubMed, Web of Science, and Ovid EMBASE). After the systematic review of all 16 studies, the outcomes including quality of bowel preparation, tolerance, willingness to repeat, and adverse effects were analyzed through meta-analysis. The statistical analysis was perform...

The Effect of Immunosuppressant Therapy Adherence on the Comfort of Liver Transplant Recipients
This study used a descriptive correlational design to determine how compliance with immunosuppressive therapy affected the well-being of liver transplant patients. The study was conducted in the liver transplant unit of a university hospital with 103 patients who underwent liver transplant surgery. The target population included patients who received treatment in liver transplant clinics between July 2016 and August 2017. Mean age of the patients in the study was 44.66 ± 14.86 years and the time after transplant was 15.48 ± 16.90 months on the average. Buried Bumper Syndrome: Early or Late?
Buried bumper syndrome (BBS) is a rare and serious complication of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube placement. In the literature, BBS is considered to be a late complication of PEG procedure, but it may occur in the early period after PEG tube placement. Early diagnosis and proper treatment are important. Different treatment modalities may be used to treat BBS. The aim of this study was to evaluate patients with BBS. During a time frame between January 2015 and February 2020, a hospital medical database was screened for PEG placement and BBS. Buried bumper syndrome was found in 36 patients. Demographic and cl...

Barriers of Adherence to a Gluten-Free Diet in Iranian Adults With Celiac Disease
This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate and classify barriers to adherence to the gluten-free diet in 137 Iranian adults with celiac disease. We used a 23-point Likert questionnaire and exploratory factor analysis to identify and classify the barriers. Adherence to gluten-free diet was assessed by measuring the serum level of anti-tTG-IgA. The correlation between the barriers and adherence to gluten-free diet was assessed using logistic regression. A total of 117 subjects completed the study. Seven factors were extracted: “gluten-free diet restrictions,” “self-awareness and social awareness,” “psychological ...

Identifying Predictors of Airway Complications During Conscious Sedation Procedures
Conscious sedation procedures are complicated by unanticipated airway compromise and obstruction. The STOP-Bang questionnaire (University of Toronto, 2012) is a validated obstructive sleep apnea screening questionnaire used as a preprocedure evaluation tool to assess a patient's risk for obstructive sleep apnea. The purpose of this study was to determine whether risk factors for obstructive sleep apnea, using the STOP-Bang questionnaire, could predict procedural airway complications in 152 endoscopy patients following conscious sedation. Logistic regression analysis revealed that a STOP-Bang score of greater than 5 (high r...

Mesenteric Panniculitis Can Be Diagnosed by Examination and Cured by Comprehensive Therapy
We present one case of mesenteric panniculitis with abdominal pain, which underwent steroid treatment regimens subsequently and gained weight moderately. An abdomen and pelvis cavity computed tomography scan showed misty mesentery, an ill-defined increase in the density of the peritoneal fat at the base of the mesentery with few small associated lymph nodes. The appearance is that of a panniculitis. His symptoms gradually decreased in intensity and disappeared totally within 1 month after oral prednisone 40 mg per day and moderate gain weight. Computed tomography scan features of the disease have recently been delineated c...

The Impact of Transition Readiness and Stress on Patient-Centered Outcomes in Young Adults With Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Young adults, 18–35 years of age, account for nearly half of all inflammatory bowel disease emergency department visits annually, costing millions of healthcare dollars and signifying undue pain and suffering. To mitigate this sequela, the study aimed to characterize the relationships between transition readiness (self-management ability), stress, and patient-centered outcomes. Outcomes were defined as disease activity and inflammatory bowel disease-related healthcare utilization (emergency department visits and inpatient hospitalization). This was a descriptive, correlational design via online survey of young adults wit...
