Delivery Methods of Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Patients With Irritable Bowel Syndrome
This article aims to provide an update on cognitive behavioral therapy research in IBS, particularly considering the dose of treatment, route of delivery (in-person vs. web- and telephone-based delivery), and outcome measures. A systematic literature review was conducted using databases of PubMed, CINAHL Complete, and Web of Science from 2008 through 2021. Healthy Food Choices, Physical Activity, and Screening Reduce the Risk of Colorectal Cancer
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States with an estimated 1,806,590 new cases and 606,520 deaths in 2020. Cancer is a public health concern due to the numbers of cases, financial costs, and morbidity and mortality rates. An estimated 42% of all diagnosed cancers and 45% of cancer deaths in the United States in 2014 could be attributed to modifiable risk factors. Colorectal cancer screening is effective because small polyps take years to grow and turn to cancers allowing for early detection and removal of precancerous polyps. Primary prevention of colorectal cancer by risk factor reduction is also e...

How Do We Start Palliative Care for Patients With End-Stage Liver Disease?
Patients with end-stage liver disease undergo repetitive patterns of recovery and deterioration and are burdened with uncertainty. Although quality of life is low in patients with end-stage liver disease and their family members, few studies have been conducted to identify what palliative care should be provided for them. This integrative review aimed to explore palliative care for patients with end-stage liver disease, focusing on the components and outcome measurements for further research. After searching for studies on palliative care for end-stage liver disease published between 1995 and 2017, 12 studies that met the ...

Impact of Infection Control Education on Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Procedural Staff
To date, minimal research has been conducted on proper use of personal protective equipment and hand hygiene within endoscopy. The American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy has developed guidelines for infection control within the endoscopy suite. A practice change based upon these guidelines was implemented. Education was provided to endoscopy procedural staff within a Midwestern hospital based upon the World Health Organization 5 Moments for Hand Hygiene initiative and included personal protective equipment. Knowledge, skills, and attitudes of the participant group were compared from paired pre- to posteducation su...

Development and Validation of the Gastrointestinal Unhelpful Thinking Scale (GUTs): A Brief Self-Report Measure for Clinical and Research Settings
This article describes the development and validation of the Gastrointestinal Unhelpful Thinking scale. The purpose of the research was to develop the Gastrointestinal Unhelpful Thinking scale to assess in tandem the primary cognitive–affective drivers of brain–gut dysregulation, gastrointestinal-specific visceral anxiety, and pain catastrophizing. The research involved 3 phases which included undergraduate and community samples. In the first phase, an exploratory factor analysis revealed a 15-item 2-factor (visceral sensitivity and pain catastrophizing) scale (N= 323), which then was confirmed in the second phase: N =...
